Przyczyną pożaru w szpitalu psychiatrycznym, który wybuchł w nocy z 31 października na 1 listopada 1980 r. w Górnej Grupie [1] w ówczesnym województwie bydgoskim [2], była „nieszczelność przewodu kominowego.

To nie był jednak pożar, który zaczął się nagle, od jednej iskry. Jak zeznawali świadkowie, jedna ze ścian budynku już kilka dni przed tragedią była ciepła, więc ogień »pracował« między warstwami cegieł budynku od jakiegoś czasu i powoli trawił kolejne poziomy.

Gdy dotarł do drewnianego strychu, wszystko potoczyło się błyskawicznie [2] [3].”

W wyniku tragedii zginęło 55 pacjentów, 26 doznało ciężkich poparzeń [2]. „W stan oskarżenia postawiono dyrekcję szpitala, jednak sprawa została umorzona na mocy amnestii z roku 1984 [2]”.
