CBN is a 'minor' cannabinoid with some major benefits.

It has potent neuroprotective effects, due to it's role in restoring mitochondrial (dys)function.

Oxytosis/ferroptosis is a specific cell death pathway that involves mitochondrial dysfunction.

This pathway is involved in neurodegenerative diseases.

It can be triggered by environmental toxicity, iron imbalances, elevated glucose levels, inflammation and oxidative stress.

This pathway leads to mitochondrial dysfunction:

🔽 Glutathione (antioxidant protection)

🔼 Oxidative stress (ROS)

🔽 Metabolic flexibility

🔽 Mitochondria available for energy production

🔽 ATP production

Disrupted neurotransmitters

🔼 Cellular aging

Basically all of these are a perfect storm for increasing cell death, and leading to neurodegenration.

CBN can rescue mitochondria from all of these pathological changes......

Firstly, it combats ROS by up-regulating several antioxidant proteins:

Nrf2 (nuclear erythroid 2-related factor)
HO-1 (heme oxygenase-1)
SOD2 (superoxide dismutase 2)
GPX4 (glutathione peroxidase 4)

Secondly, it activates the AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway

This pathway is crucial for:

- Mitochondrial biogenesis (creation of new mitochondria)

- Protecting against ROS

- Expression of (VDAC) proteins for better nutrient delivery

- Restoring cellular energy metabolism (ATP)

Through these mechanisms, CBN is able to protect neurones against cell death by restoring (dys)functional mitochondria.

In effect protecting against neurodegeneration

But thats not all....

CBN also had protective effects for mitochondria in other cell types, including:

Immune cells (microglia)
Heart cells
Liver (cancer) cells

This implies that CBN's mitochondrial benefits may extend beyond just neuroprotection.
