The Unexpected Gift of Discipleship to Nobody
Today we will look at one of many examples where Jesus used someone who everyone thought was nobody to do great things in His kingdom. As He was traveling with His disciples, Jesus needed to pass through the region of Samaria. His disciples and other Jews didn’t like the
Samaritans and preferred not to inter-mingle with them (if given the choice, they would have taken the long journey to go around it). Nevertheless, Jesus said that they needed to go through the region.

Today we will look at the famous encounter that He had with a Samaritan woman
at Jacob’s well. It is important to note the history of the Samaritans. They were actually Jewish descendants from the northern kingdom of Israel (remember our recent study of Hosea). They had intermingled and married with the Assyrians and the Jews from the Southern Kingdom
considered them to be half-breeds and wanted nothing to do with them.

The Samaritans knew very well that the Jews thought that they were beneath them and not worthy of being included in God’s kingdom. But Jesus saw things very differently and actually went out of His way to
reach out to and to interact with them. In this case, this little person was able to see and understand something that many who thought they were wise simply could not see. She was able to see and understand that He was the well and the fountain of truth. Jesus was about to use a
“nobody” to do great things for the kingdom of God.

Now let’s review and consider this famous scene from the Gospel of John in chapter 4:

5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was
there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

9 Then the woman of Samaria
said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He
would have given you living water.”

11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and
his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into
everlasting life.”

15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”

Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I
have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. - John 4:5-19

Jesus Leads Us by Example
Today’s scripture is from yet another well-known bible passage. In it, Jesus has just been baptized in the Jordan River and is about to begin His adult ministry. As we read this passage, remember that a very key component of the ministry of Jesus was that He was here to represent
us. He was fully man and He was also fully God. Keep this in mind as we read through this passage about His temptation.

The bible says that God next led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. In essence, Jesus (as God who is always in control) led himself into

We Prove What We Believe by What We Do
At the end of yesterday’s scripture verses, the Lord had just successfully gotten the attention of the Samaritan woman at the well. She had perceived that there was something very special about Him. Today He will set in place the firm foundation of her belief which will change
her forever. Take note of two very important aspects of what happened (what she did) as a result of her belief.

First, after Jesus clearly explained who He was and she fully understood, she dropped what she was doing. The priorities in her life suddenly changed dramatically.

Greatness from Humility
This is the theme for today as given to me this morning by the Lord. Demonstrating greatness from humility is the central theme that Jesus demonstrated with His very life (all of it as we will see). It is also the core of the message that He shares with all of us who follow Him
as we are saved and empowered by His greatness. We (in our little weak and insignificant selves) are given a power that goes beyond what we can even begin to imagine.

Regarding the life of Jesus, first let us look at and consider His birth… in a small and humble village

What Matters Is What God Says About Us
Brothers and sisters, this is the message that the Lord placed on my heart as He gently nudged me out of sleep this morning. What should matter first and foremost to each of us is what God thinks of us. This should matter first to us individually as well as collectively as a
nation and community. After whispering this message, He pointed me to two very familiar stories in the bible where His people needed to be reminded of this.

The first case involves the following famous verse from the book of Job:

3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you

Be Thankful In All Things
It is easy to be grateful during times of abundance and prosperity at every level. When our store houses overflow, our bodies are strong, and we can feel God’s presence, it is easy. But the bible calls for us to be thankful in all things. In his final advice in the first letter
to Thessalonica, Paul exhorts the new believers to:

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I believe he gives us this advice to prepare us for the times when we will feel

Thanksgiving without Ceasing
I want to continue to give thanks to the Lord everyday for everything, including for His rest. You see, early this morning as I awoke, I was very tired as I laid there waiting for Him to give me the devotional word. Then at 5:58 AM I received the following text message in Spanish
from a dear Venezuelan friend. God is indeed good all the time:

God Is a Strong Tower
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” - Proverbs 18:10

The Name of the Lord is a strong tower. It is a place where we can go in times of difficulty;
