1/ Russia's VT-40 'Judgment Day' FPV drones are reportedly blowing up on launch and killing their own operators. It's the latest in a series of problems that are being blamed on a manufacturer that appears to be more interested in quantity than quality. ⬇️
2/ The 'Romanov Light' Telegram channel reports:
"In the last few months, when launching VT-40 Sudoplatov "Judgment Day" FPVs, there have been more frequent cases of warheads being initiated during drone launch. There are quite a few dead and wounded."
3/ "Considering that it takes a considerable amount of time to train a good FPV operator, these losses are especially noticeable. Among the dead are operators of very serious units and services.
4/ "The reason is in the new versions of VT-40, or more specifically, in their video transmitters operating at lower frequencies than before. They create a field sufficient to initiate an electric detonator.
5/ "That is, the VT-40 Sudoplatov 'Judgment Day' FPV drones now supplied to the Front are actually dangerous primarily for the operators themselves."
6/ Romanov Light has previously highlighted serious problems with VT-40 drones, in particular the failure by the manufacturer to adapt to Ukrainian electronic warfare by changing the frequency on which they operate.
7/ Similar complaints have also been made by other Russian milbloggers, who confirm that the VT-40 drones are vulnerable to jamming.
8/ According to Romanov Light, "The enemy has long identified this frequency and provided almost the entire line of contact both in the [Kherson] area and in other directions with the appropriate electronic warfare."
9/ "As a result, the overwhelming majority of drones launched by our operators do not reach their targets.
The problem could be solved by changing the frequency, but for the supplier this has obviously turned into 'just a business'."
10/ The manufacturer was said to be under investigation for embezzlement by pricing the drones far higher than their reported unit cost of 20,000 rubles ($191). However, production has not only continued but the manufacturer reportedly wants to monopolise FPV drone production:
11/ "Currently, the order has been sent down from above for the quantity (not quality) of applications – as a result, most drones just fly into the ground. But beautiful statistics in numbers are sent to the top.
12/ "Moreover, the businessmen behind 'Sudoplatov – Judgment Day' have come up with a new scheme - a monopolisation is being prepared and pushed through the Ministry of Defence for 'Judgment Day', which has already shat itself everywhere – the introduction of a single standard…
13/ …for FPV drones and the introduction of a [standard] ground control station – "GCS 2.0". According to their idea, all other manufacturers and suppliers (including volunteer drones) will be required to work only through it..."
14/ According to Romanov Light, the proposed new contract is for no less than 120 billion rubles ($1.14 billion) and is being promoted by Deputy Defence Minister General Alexey Krivoruchko.
15/ The author's complaints are consistent with previous complaints from volunteer drone makers that defence manufacturers and the Russian MOD have created a corrupt system to monopolise supply while charging excessive sums for their products.
1/ Russian soldiers are being incentivised with financial bonuses or extra leave if they shoot down drones. This has reportedly led to some Russians deliberately shooting down their own drones to earn the benefits being offered. ⬇️
2/ The Russian military analyst Alexey Sukonkin writes:
"It's been clear to everyone for a long time that the main problem on the front line is drones."
3/ "All possible methods are used to combat them, and incentives have been introduced for those fighters who shoot down enemy 'birds'.
1/ Several Russian soldiers are to be tried for the torture and mass murder of at least seven of their comrades in occupied Ukraine, allegedly on the orders of the commander of the 6th Motorised Rifle Division, Major General Marat Ospanov. ⬇️
2/ The Southern District Military Court in Rostov has received a criminal case of murder, torture, abuse of power with the use of violence and desecration of the bodies of the deceased, according to Radio Free Europe.
3/ The killings took place following the publication of various 'appeal to the Tsar' videos from units within the 6th Division, complaining about the appalling conditions and huge losses facing its soldiers. The 1486th Motor Rifle Regiment reportedly lost half of its men.
1/ A ban on the use of personally owned vehicles means that Russian soldiers are now hiding their vehicles from commanders and using bicycles to travel to frontline positions, carry ammunition and travel to meetings, according to Russian milbloggers. ⬇️
2/ A video posted by 'Witnesses of Bayraktar' shows a Russian soldier on a bicycle leading a BMP to the front line: "They say that they want to ban volunteer cars at the front. Never mind, there is always a way out."
3/ "After all, no one said a word about bicycles. (The bicycle ride took place right under the enemy's nose. It was about 1.5 km to the line of contact.)"
1/ Russia is throwing scarce specialist troops into bloody 'meat assaults' made necessary by commanders' false claims to have captured areas that are still held by Ukrainian forces, according to a Russian officer. ⬇️
2/ According to ex-Wagner commander and milblogger Andrey Medvedev, an officer serving with the Russian Army's Central Military district has written to him to say:
3/ "Our division command decided to take extreme measures that defy common sense. Namely, to form assault groups and reserves from among specialists from other units that do not belong to motorised rifle and assault units.
1/ The commander of the Russian 13th Guards Tank Regiment is reported to have been arrested with several of his subordinates for extorting tens of millions of rubles, tooth veneers, and other material goods from soldiers under his command in the 'Luhansk People's Republic'. ⬇️
2/ The regiment has had a chequered history during the war in Ukraine. Only a month into the war in March 2022, its then commander reportedly shot himself after it was discovered that many of its tanks had been looted for parts and were unusable.
3/ Since then, the regiment has gained a reputation for treating its men brutally. Soldiers from the regiment were filmed being stripped naked, beaten and made to trim grass with their fingers in August 2023.
1/ Incompetence by Russian commanders is reported to have led to the deaths of Russian special forces operators, likely including UAV pilots, in areas of north-west Syria that have been overrun by rebels. ⬇️
2/ According to a source quoted by the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel:
"The events in Syria have once again demonstrated the failure of the leadership of the Special Operations Forces of the Russian Armed Forces.
3/ "Despite having advance information about the plans of militant groups in the Aleppo region, the SOF command did not take any adequate actions to preserve personnel, thereby allowing the death of specialists who were simply caught off guard by the militants.
