Remember how in the eighties, everyone mistook the fact that the first cluster of patients with AIDS were all gay men, to mean that only gay men could get it, so they didn't connect the dots when people getting blood transfusions fell ill until a few more years went by? 🧵
Thats exactly what i hear all over again when i see people trying to find any commonality between people with long covid other than the fucking obvious one that is right there in the name: covid. thats it, the answer is covid, its not even a mystery this time. 🧵
long covid isn't caused by latent viral infections, hereditary illnesses, age, weight, comorbidities, etc. Just like aids isn't caused by being gay, or injecting drugs, or being from haiti (why the fuck is haitian bashing popular again also btw?) 🧵
long covid is caused by SARS-CoV-2. just like aids is caused by hiv. they are both caused by a fucking virus - not your genes or your lifestyle or your luck. all these other commonalities may increase one's risk of being exposed, but they are not the cause. 🧵
remember when everyone was trying to say ebv reactivation was the cause of long covid?
i have some really fucking bad news for you. ebv reactivation was at one time considered as a cause of aids also.
in both cases, its an outcome rather than the cause. 🧵
dysautonomia, chronic fatigue syndrome, mental health issues, high cholesterol, fungal and bacterial infections, other latent viral infections such as CMV, VZV, and HHV6, etc., have likewise been pointed to as causes of long covid because they're commonly seen in patients 🧵
I have some more really fucking bad news for you. All of those things I mentioned in the previous tweet? Are also common findings in people living with HIV (particularly in advanced stages, or those whose initiation of antivirals was delayed) 🧵
Notably, HHV6 was initially isolated and identified in lymphocytes of AIDS patients in the course of looking for the cause of the illness. It turned out to be an incidental finding, as it will with long covid. Because in both cases, another virus was & is the actual cause 🧵
Unlike the early eighties, when HIV was not yet known to be the cause of AIDS - with Long Covid, we know right out the gate that the virus responsible is SARS-CoV-2. And because of that, we also know these other things are OUTCOMES. As they were with AIDS. 🧵
The cause is known. What isn't yet well understood is the pathology by which SARS-CoV-2 induced Long Covid - and thats the part that must be studied in order to develop treatments. Everything else is a grifty waste of precious resources, while patients are dying🧵
Eerily, the fact that all of the same outcomes have once again been mistakenly pointed to as causes, actually provides a major clue to the pathology of long covid. But no one wants to talk about that, so they avoid the area of research all together. And patients are dying. 🧵
Everyone likes commonalities until it comes to viral persistence & immune dysfunction, for some reason. Its simpler to blame everything on clotting abnormalities, inflammation, allergies, or autoimmunity. 🧵
But - once again - I have some really bad news for you. Once again, those are all outcomes, of the virus. As seen in HIV, in which all of these outcomes are also commonly seen. 🧵
Which, again, gives us a clue to the pathology of long covid - especially since we know that both viruses are able to infect immune cells, bone marrow, and even brain cells. Because we know how infections of these compartments affects these things. 🧵
But instead of starting with known biological mechanisms and viral pathologies and connecting the dots, researchers run around like blind men trying to describe an elephant - each in their own little segment, never reading others' findings. And patients are dying. 🧵
context w/research about more overlapping issues 🧵
If you find my threads helpful, tips are appreciated - I am disabled, unhoused, and immunodeficient due to long covid & crowdfund to survive.

I have masked in indoor public spaces for 5 years. Today, with a cold front bearing down on us and in desperate need to wash my winter clothes - and thankfully with funds to do so because of a generous donor - I found myself in an impossible situation 🧵
I spent over two hours attempting to get a ride via @lyft @AskLyft, from a popular business parking lot near my camp. FOUR drivers waited until they pulled up, to cancel my ride. In each instance, I had let them know in the driver note, I am not ill but immune compromised, my mask protects everyone. 🧵
@lyft @AskLyft The first one actually responded with a mask emoji, leading me to believe it would be fine & maybe even be lucky enough that they would mask also 🤞
🧵
How we frame public discourse is important. Failure to do so accurately, legitimizes absurd views that cannot be debated because they have no basis in rationality. 🧵
Let's examine using a benign example: What color is the sky?
🧵
Well, as it turns out, the question doesn't adequately address differences in weather or time of day, so while most would automatically say "blue," there are ranges of technically correct answers.

Have you seen messages like this on your crowdfunding / mutual aid posts? They're all scams. Read on to learn how it works.
Those are bots, that search for keywords, and post automated messages. Thats why they usually appear within minutes of making the post. If you interact with them in any way, you'll soon receive messages like this, that give the game away.
Its a pyramid scheme. They want you to join their club that promises huge mutual aid returns. The catch is, you have to pay to play. They give you a list of fundraisers you have to donate to, and a script to use to promote the scheme.
Hello, my name is Froglet Taylor and I am a 44 year old female from Houston, Texas. I have had Long Covid for 4.5 years and am very disturbed that the majority of research to this point has been repetitive observational studies as millions of people like myself continue to get sicker with each passing day & are unable to access financial support because there is no point of care test for long covid.

The first time I had Covid was in February 2020, when health department officials in Houston were telling us the virus hadn't been detected here and healthcare workers need masks for other things so we shouldn't use them. Untold numbers of people were not only infected as a result of these lies, but also denied timely testing which now limits their ability to obtain treatment or be included in research.

I've since been diagnosed with persistent cd4 lymphopenia, which is the exact type of immune deficiency seen in HIV/AIDS. One of many reinfections with SARS-CoV-2 caused my CD4 count to plummet to 84, and as a result I developed candidiasis, p. jirovecii pnuemonia, and reactivated CMV. I've since had several other opportunistic infections, many also from the list of those known as "AIDS Defining Conditions."

Image is a chart that claims Israel has dropped more bombs on Gaza since Oct 7, 2023 than were dropped on London, Dresden, and Hiroshima combined during World War Two. I checked, its true - sources in this 🧵
🇬🇧 London 🇬🇧
📍
🗨️Records are incomplete, but between 7 October 1940 and 6 June 1941 almost 28,000 high explosive bombs and over 400 parachute mines were recorded landing on Greater London. Daylight bombing was abandoned after October 1940 as the Luftwaffe experienced unsustainable losses.
📍
🗨️From September 1940, the German Luftwaffe dropped some 20,000 bombs on the city, killing thousands, and leaving many more homeless
🗨️On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. The bomb was known as “Little Boy”, a uranium gun-type bomb that exploded with about thirteen kilotons of force.
🗨️Three days after the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9 – a 21-kiloton plutonium device known as “Fat Man.”
📍
The atomic bombs used in Japan in 1945, and the bombs or devices testing during the following seven years, depended on the fission of uranium-235 or plutonium-239, mostly the latter. The explosive effect of each was equal to that of up to a few tens of thousand tonnes of the conventional explosive TNT. On this basis of comparison, the Hiroshima bomb was of about 15 kilotons – that is, of 15 thousand tonnes of TNT equivalent – and that at Nagasaki was of 25 kilotons (ca. 65 and 105 GJ respectively).
