Thread on the multinational origins & fall of the interwar 2nd Polish state.
Excerpts from Lukowski's "Brief History of 🇵🇱" - nothing specialist. but discussion of widely divergent strategies to recreate 🇵🇱, each with very different envisioned alliances were most interesting.🧵 Image
The biggest movement for 🇵🇱 independence, the National Democrats, had very different ideas from Piłsudski's faction that won out after WW1.
The ND founder, Dmowski 1st aimed at autonomy under 🇷🇺. He saw 🇩🇪as the real threat to Polish culture. He was a hard-right Social Darwinist. Image

Dmowski believed if he could prove Polish loyalty to the Tsars, they would eventually use the promise of a united Polish vassal as a weapon against Germany.
Disappointments in 1905 & harshening of Russification policies lost him much support. Antisemitism became his crutch. Image
Image
Image
Situation of Poles in Prussia. Of the 3 post-partition Empires, They were simultaneously the most educated & discriminated against. The anti-Germanism of Dmowski's NDs found firmest support here, with the strongest Polish intellectual backing. Image
Image
Image
A common joke comparing government standards between the Austrians, Germans & Russians, whose borders all met in majority Polish territory:
A Jewish merchant complaining that German custom-officials never took bribes, the Russians always did, & with Austrians one was never sure. Image
Outbreak of WW1. At first, the majority of Polish sentiment was pro-Russian. The Tsar publicly announced as a war-goal for a reunified autonomous Poland under 1 monarch, something like Austria-Hungary.
Nobody expected all 3 Empires to collapse by the war's end. Image
Image
Not to be outdone, Germany & Austria promised the same united Poland under their monarchs as Russia did. But they finally agreed on a small Polish vassal state to be used as a cannon fodder.
Dmowski's NDs got full allied blessing for a 🇵🇱-in-exile "Blue Army" to fight in 🇫🇷. Image
Image
Image
Image
Unlike Dmowski's troops in France, Piłsudski' ordered his "Polish Legions" to refuse to take any loyalty oath to Germany. Piłsudski went to prison for this.
Overthrow of Russian Tsar in 1917 had 🇬🇧🇫🇷 declare Polish state as a war-goal. Piłsudski's 30k army kept fighting 🇷🇺anyway. Image
Image
Image
Image
Dmowski's strategy became totally discredited by a second revolution in Russia, this time against the Provisional Government by the Bolsheviks.
On collapse of Austria-Hungary, its Poles declared a (non-Soviet) Socialist Republic, supported by Piłsudski.
End of WW1 & new 🇵🇱. Image
Image
Image
Image
WW1 was over, but war with Russia (now the USSR) continued uninterrupted for Poland. Piłsudski's legions also destroyed & annexed the just declared West-🇺🇦Republic.
Russian Civil War. Dmowski wanted to intervene to support the Whites, but Piłsudski saw Soviets as the lesser evil. Image
Image
In newly independent Poland, Dmowski's NDs demanded an aggressively ethnonationalist state, whilst Piłsudski tried to draw on traditions of the old 1700s tolerantly multinational Commonwealth.
Dmowski began losing control of his own radicals, who began assassinating politicians. Image
Image
Just noticed "National Democracy" might be quite an inaccurate translation. It looks like "People's (stress on ethnicity) Democracy would be more accurate. Don't know Polish but Народ is pretty universal.
Image
Piłsudski resigned leadership after beating the USSR to a stalemate in the Polish-Soviet War.
I skipped that section here as I feel that war is already well-known by my followers. Recommend book pictured for anyone wanting to explore it in depth.
Polish successes in early 20s. Image
Image
Piłsudski returned to de facto return to rule Poland after getting fed up with politicians' squabbling.
By the 30s both USSR & Germany were recovering. Piłsudski signed treaties with both, knowing they would merely buy time. NDs (the most popular 🇵🇱 party) spent time Jewbaiting.Image
Image
Polish GDP per capita roughly matched Spain on outbreak of WW2 (🇪🇸 now ranks 20 places above 🇵🇱).
Poland's post-Piłsudski foreign policy under Beck. He was deeply skeptical of Franco-British ability or commitment to protect Poland.
He was correct, but neither was he pro-German. Image
Image
Image
Image
German plans for Poland in WW2. Hitler originally intended to turn into a minor dependent Slavic ally, on the model of 🇸🇰🇭🇷🇧🇬.
Poland's most popular party (the NDs) were also little different from National Socialists. Phoney guarantees from 🇫🇷🇬🇧 ensured quixotic 🇵🇱 obstinacy. Image
Image
Hitler's Blitzkrieg on Poland. German casualties in the invasion were actually higher than those suffered in France in 1940! French uselessness in the phoney war.

Thread w/excerpts of "The Sociology of the Yoruba".
One of 3 main nations of Nigeria, with Hausa & Igbo.
Also the overwhelming original ethnicity of most USian slaves, or what @tariqnasheed dubs "Foundational Black Americans". I prefer Hakan's term "Afro-Saxon" as more precise.Image
Pre-colonial culturo-political divisions of the Yoruba. Like the Greeks or Sumerians, they were divide into warring city-states, but acknowledged their unity in language and religion.
Author (1970) notes older people identified with their local tribe/dialect over being Yoruba. Image
"Yoruba" as an ethnic name seems not to predate the 1850s. Most common previous endonym was "Aku".
The term Yoruba seems to be an exonym originally used by the Hausa to the north, who used the name of the neighboring Oyo-Yoruba state to all "Yoruba", which Europeans then adopted. Image

Thread w/excerpts of How Long Will South Africa Survive (1982).
Much new info here to me; as a millennial, how apartheid SA worked as a state is a blank. Parallels with🇮🇱 are constant, though author never draws them. SA however, couldn't rely on a powerful lobby or diaspora.Image
Author opens with the 1960 Sharpeville massacre, contends SA government very narrowly missed a violent overthrow, just as the Tsarist Russia barely dodged the abortive 1905 Revolution.
Both states had experienced breakneck economic growth alongside boiling social tension. Image
Image
Image
Worth noting that <100 casualties suffered at the hands of SA police were quite minor in comparison to massacres associated with the transition to black rule (Zanzibar, Congo etc) elsewhere in 60s Africa.
Sharpeville's aftermath marked SA's turn to a security state. Image

Thread w/excerpts of Toynbee on the lost Minoan Civilisation, which had been discovered only 33 years prior in 1900.
Most curious are speculations on possible subterranean influence on Ancient Greek religion. The Minoan culture & language (undeciphered) have no known relatives.🧵 Image
Image
Greek authors had acknowledged from earliest times there had been on their lands an earlier Civilisation than their own, which they had since taken over. But beyond their existence, nothing was known of these "Pelasgians" or "Trojans".
Völkerwanderung means "mass migration".Image
Image
More basic background. The Mycenean, or Achaean, warbands first took over Greece, then took to the seas themselves. Minoa seems have experienced several earlier shocks (eg. Thera mega-eruption), but it seems Greek piratical raids were likely a catalyst for final Minoan collapse. Image

First of threads on the Hellenisation of Ancient Anatolia.
A millenium-long process that saw its transformation from an unruly province of the Persian Empire, to the main surviving bulwark of Greek culture by the early Middle-Ages.
Summarising the pre-Hellenistic period here.🧵 Image
There are very few good sources on Anatolian between the Hittite civilisation's collapse & Persian conquest.
Known for certain is its unusual linguistic diversity (even by ancient standards) with at least 2 non-Aryan, non-Semitic language families. Because fractured geography. Image
Alongside kindred Indo-Anatolian languages, there was "Hattic" (Hittite no relation), known entirely from religious texts. There was also Hurrian & Urartian, isolates oft-considered to be related (& Kassite?). Spoken in the Armenian highlands, Armenians themselves arrived later.

Thread w/excerpts of Spencer & Gillen's "Native Tribes of Central Australia" (1899). One of the latest anthropological accounts of Aboriginal societies in a relatively 'pristine' state, though early comments in the book say their isolation wouldn't last much longer.🧵 Image
Authors state urgency of their mission, having scant remaining time to describe Aboriginal social organisation & beliefs, already rapidly going extinct at the time of writing. Book mostly focuses on the Arunda (Arendte, spellings vary) still one of the most numerous groups today.
Image
Image
The Alatunja, the closest thing to an individual leader amongst the Central Australian natives. "J/Ch" are palatal stops, not affricates.
Title was originally earned on merit, then passed down the male line, barring any disgrace. Typical "big man" system described in athropology.Image

Short thread on life of the Tasmanian Aborigines prior to European arrival - the most isolated & primitive human society that has ever existed.
Excerpts from Edgerton's "Sick Societies".
Photos from my own last holiday there.🧵Image
Image
Tasmania is a cool temperate, mountainous & windyswept island, roughly the size of a united Ireland.
Humans crossed the landbridge to Tasmania from mainland Australia during the Ice Age, at least 20K years ago. From 10K BC that connection was flooded, & they were totally alone.

Image
Image
Image
Tasmanians lived in foraging bands of 40-50 people.
Diet was adequate except for the winters, in which they were often brought to brink of starvation.
Dangerous tasks fell overwhelmingly on the women, such as climbing 30-metre trees or diving treacherous waters for food.
