Currently in 1st place in the 2024 US Investing Championship (1 Million Dollar Division) with +308.6% YTD and 5th place in the 20K Dollar Division with 339.1% through Nov 30th. 📊

As a trader with 15 years of experience, I’d like to share a realistic perspective on trading and the competition.

Here’s a breakdown: 👇Image

300%+ Returns Aren't My Usual Annual Performance

If I could achieve 3x returns every year, even starting with just $1 million, I’d be wealthier than Elon Musk in 12 years—this isn’t realistic. The #USInvestingChampionship is about showcasing your trading skills to the world, proving you can manage others' money or teach them to invest. I entered the competition for this purpose, using every trading technique I could to achieve triple-digit returns, including leverage.

My Realistic Return Goal🔥

I don’t participate in competitions every year. With the size of my own total portfolio, I aim for a steady annual return of 30-40%. This is enough to provide a good life for my family and contribute to society—this has been my goal after 15 years of continuous dedication to trading and investing.
3/9
Leverage Used in the Competition

This year, I used a leverage account of about 200%. Of course, it wasn’t 200% all year. It wouldn’t have been possible to survive April and August’s market corrections, especially the August sell-off due to yen unwinding. Leverage has no one-size-fits-all guide, only time-tested principles.
4/9
Leverage Is a Double-Edged Sword

Leverage can amplify returns, but it can also lead to a K.O.-style failure. Always use leverage cautiously. Stick to key principles:

1.Only use leverage when there’s a decent profit cushion and you're trading smoothly
2.When the market has a clear direction (preferably early in the trend)
3.When you assess a high chance of success
4.Never maintain high leverage for too long.

More importantly, you must be able to release leverage quickly when conditions change.
5/9
You Can't Learn to Use Leverage Without Painful Lessons

Ironically, you won’t understand how to use leverage properly until you've suffered the consequences of misuse. The key isn’t how much short-term profit you gain with leverage but how much return your account realizes over the long term. Only then will you realize when not to use leverage and when it’s appropriate. Without a mature mindset, money gained by luck will eventually be lost by skill.
6/9
Trading Is a Math Game

Before entering a trade, I ensure the potential reward is 3-5 times greater than the potential loss. Most of the time, I aim for trades with a reward-to-risk ratio of 5:1 or more. Only by targeting a 5R+ average can you achieve a 2-3R average gain/loss ratio over time.
7/9
Simple Technical Analysis Works

The technical analysis I use is straightforward and can be learned from books or YouTube. I use a mix of breakout and pullback strategies, combining everything I’ve learned and validated. But most of my trades focus on Stage 2 uptrend stocks. Success isn’t about the strategy but understanding its strengths, weaknesses, and the right timing. Understanding the market's current nature is more important than learning new techniques, and when to use a strategy matters more than learning what to use.
8/9
Trading Strategy

Living in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 and managing my family, I can’t trade US stocks full-time during market hours. I can’t afford to lose my health. Now that I have two daughters👧🏻👶🏻, I focus more on position trading or longer term swing trading, aiming for multi-wave trades. Understanding a stock’s fundamentals is key—stocks that rise long-term are driven by solid fundamentals. I also do shorter term swing trading, focusing on high-volatility, high-momentum stocks.
9/9
Selling Strategy

There’s no fixed selling method. As I mentioned earlier, you need to assess the market and the stock’s price action. If the market isn’t trending strongly and the stock shows parabolic behavior, it’s best to sell into strength. But if the market is trending strongly and your stock is one of the strong RS ones, selling into weakness is the right strategy.
