After 1 year of bargaining with Providence execs and NO meaningful progress, today we announced we are striking on January 10th.
At my hospital this includes the IM, Med-Peds, Palliative care, & OB hospitalists, and the Prov-employed OBGYNs, midwives, and ALL the nurses. /1
And that’s not all:
In total, 11 bargaining units across 8 Providence hospitals & clinics are joining in this strike.
Almost 5,000 doctors, nurses, NPs, PAs, & midwives have HAD IT with a Providence CEO who makes over 11 million a year...while we just want safe staffing. /2
We will strike for as long as it takes.
Providence can avoid this by *actually* compromising in the next 10 days before the strike begins and realizing what we need to deliver the FANTASTIC care we provide.
Wait till you see what they’ve done in bargaining so far… /3
We hospitalists asked for language to protect us from Providence outsourcing us to cheaper companies.
We even compromised & put in language for exceptions in unforeseen circumstances.
They refused – even though another Portland hospitalist contract has this EXACT language. /4
We asked for specific staffing targets and mandatory posting when more doctors and NPs are needed to safely care for patients.
They refused.
They said we could form a committee.
In the next YEAR.
With no help for us NOW. /5
The St. Vincent Palliative Care hospitalists asked to not be *forced* to travel to Providence hospitals all over Oregon – and if they were asked, to have some limits and ya know, be compensated for said travel.
Providence rejected this ask entirely. /6
Providence offered night differential and signing bonuses for the IM & Med Peds hospitalists – but refuses this for the OB Hospitalists.*
(*who regularly manage 3am emergencies)
Does Providence really not value the all-female OB Hospitalist staff & the women they care for? /7
This is the TIP of the iceberg, but I want you to see exactly why we are striking as our last resort.
Execs in suits are failing us – and failing YOU, the patients – by putting profits first.
@KOINNews @KGWNews @Oregonian @RonWyden @JeffMerkley @TinaKotek @vitusspehar @MorePerfectUS @KATUNews UPDATE: Management is now calling hospitalists asking if they plan to work during the strike, which is a violation of our section 7 rights in the National Labor Relations Act.
We are not required to answer and will be filing an Unfair Labor Practice.

I haven't talked about this much here, but on this #LaborDay2024 I want to tell you why I am a unionized physician and what we're experiencing negotiating our first contract (spoiler: there's a reason we unionized...) /1
I'm a member of the Pacific Northwest Hospital Medicine Association, represented by @AFTHealthcare and staffed by @OregonNurses. PNWHMA is the 1st hospitalist-specific labor union in the U.S.
Doctor unions are growing because administrators are prioritizing profits>>patients. /2
My group includes more than 70 hospitalists at Providence St. Vincent who are fiercely advocating for safer conditions for our patients and for us. We love our jobs, but admin fails to listen to what we need to do our jobs to the highest standards.
I attended the virtual Contraceptive Technology conference yesterday - here are some things I learned or thought were interesting & wanted to share...
Just before ovulation, uterine contractions REVERSE to help draw sperm UP from the cervix into the uterine cavity. So cool. /1
Menstruation is very rare in nature – only 1.6% of placenta-forming species do. There is no evolutionary benefit to menstruating. (That percentage blew my mind). /2
If providers seem dismissive or unfamiliar with fertility awareness methods, patients may go to unreliable sources that promote misinformation…potentially leading to unintended pregnancy.
We MUST show respect and provide clear counseling and support. (from @cbpolis) /3
This is what happened at the @acog meeting last week.
What bothers me most? The women overheard saying, “This isn’t the place or the time” to a man who is calling out a physician who sexually assaulted his wife.
I’d say I don’t condone this man hitting the physician who assaulted his wife but I’d be lying because I wish I’d done that to the OBGYN who commented on my breasts when I was a trainee. His name was Dr. Tom Gregory. He still works there.
Dr. Gregory is a Urogynecologist who saw me in a dress at the 2010 residency graduation. I was about 12 wks pregnant and had just announced it to my residency.
He said he knew I was pregnant because my … *motions to my breasts* were bigger.
1/ As an OBGYN, it's important to address misconceptions. Let's clear this up: Birth control DOES NOT cause abortion. Birth control methods like pills, patches, and IUDs work by preventing ovulation and/or fertilization. #ClearingTheAir#BirthControlFacts
@StudentsforLife 3/ Abortion involves the termination of an established pregnancy, whereas birth control prevents pregnancy from occurring in the first place. The two are distinct and separate methods. #ScienceMatters#BirthControlFacts
