1/ One last thread to end 2024! Let's take a quick look at Russia's towed AA guns in storage: S-60s and KS-19s 🧵 Image
2/ So it's no mystery that this war is full of stark contrats: Leopard 2s and self-propelled MT-LBs, Ladas and BMP-3s... And also old towed AA guns repurposed for ground targets. The main Soviet systems in this regard were S-60s and KS-19s. Image
3/ Both Ukraine and Russia have been using them extensively since 2022. But while Ukraine at times modernizes them with targeting systems (not always tho)...
4/ ...Russia, well, it's just Russia:
5/ So, considering it's not so weird to see them in battlefield-related media, let's see how many they had in storage and how many do they still have mothballed. Image
6/ And here are the numbers! Image
7/ Now let's take a closer look at the evolution of each base: let's start by the 80th artillery arsenal: there were 68 towed AA guns before the war at two spots, but by 2023 they were gone. Image
Image
Image
8/ Same with the 744th arsenal, tho only 6 guns here prewar: Image
Image
9/ And at the 347th (formerly 216th) there were also just 28 before the war, 2 in 2023, and 0 in 2024: Image
Image
Image
Image
10/ Next, the main towed artillery base: the undesignated one near Planovyi. 382 before the war, 350 in 2023 and 302 in 2024: Image
Image
Image
11/ In 2024: Image
Image
Image
Image
12/ Now let's go to the 7020th, another one of the three main storages: 181 prewar, 177 in 2023 and 103 in 2024: Image
Image
Image
13/ 2023 and 2024: Image
Image
Image
Image
14/ Then the 109th arsenal. This base in mainly about MLRS, tho there are also some towed tube pieces, including 36 S-60s before the war which were then gone: Image
Image
Image
15/ At the 243rd something weird happened. Before the war there were 18 pieces: Image
Image
16/ But by 2023 it had increased considerably, to 90 pieces in total mostly at a new spot while the previous one didn't had almost any pieces left there: Image
Image
17/ Yet by 2024 it was mostly depleted, just a little higher than prewar numbers (25 in total left): Image
Image
18/ The last major base is the arsenal near Lesnoi Gorodok: 275 in 2020, 233 in 2022 and just 89 in 2024. This follows the pattern of the rest of artillery pulled out from this base: Image
Image
Image
19/ 2022 and 2023: Image
Image
Image
Image
20/ Now let's loom at the 120th arsenal. This artillery storage base has served as the "artillery BTRZ" since the invasion started because it's so near the Ukrainian border and due to the lack of proper artillery repair bases, unlike AFVs. Image
21/ However, there were only 20 pieces here in 2021, gone by the time of newer footage: Image
Image
22/ It's possible that by 2023 there were some in the artillery cannibalization hub, but it's so hard to tell: Image
Image
23/ The last base is the 904th. There were actually no towed AA guns here before the war, but 10 S-60s appeared by 2023 as this base was reformed into a collection and repoir point (kudos to @waffentraeger):
24/ And that's it. Unfortunately I didn't try to distingish between S-60s and KS-19s because at some bases it's easy to ID but at other is nigh impossible. Image
Image
25/ This thread was also a good way to get better at artillery IDs. All those that read me on an usual basis know that I'm decent at IDing AFVs, but not artillery by a long shot (pun intended).
26/ This also brings back memories of one of my earliest, obscure threads. Good way to finish 2024 almost as I started it!
27/ As usual, big thanks to all those that help! @HighMarsed who did the early IDs, @waffentraeger and @Ath3neN0ctu4 for helping, @hizzo_jay and the rest of the gang!
@HighMarsed @waffentraeger @Ath3neN0ctu4 @hizzo_jay 28/ Until the BTRZ thread, then! Image

Barely any movement in Russian storage bases in 2026 so far. Seems UVZ has enough T-72As in queue for now to pull more from storage, and everything else is pretty much unchanged.
The most remarkable things is the 2456th focusing now on BTR-70s and the 769th slowly pulling the remaining BMPs.
I guess we're officially at the point refurbishing stored armor no longer makes sense. They're all too old and broken down, Russia already has enough armor reserves for what little action they see and new production is already more than enough to compensate losses.

There clearly has been a huge movement of stored towed artillery pieces since late summer/early autumn 2025, but unfortunately we lack footage. Image
Just look at all those barrels cannibalized at artillery arsenals like Planovyi and compare them with the prewar situation or even just over a year before late 2025: Image
Image
Image
And also an increasing number of barreless pieces, like these 2A36s: Image

One of the biggest MT-LB bases prewar, the 7004th is now all but empty. Even most trucks are gone, but what's interesting, I can only spot 3 bad looking MT-LBs left here: Image

Kudos to @aXielMeMer9432 for finding the update on Google Earth!
@aXielMeMer9432 Otoh, almost everything updated in Ussuriysk is all but empty of anything but trucks, so we can expect the same for the 7020th Arsenal that didn't get updated this time. Here one example of a part of the 7033rd previously storing SPGs and MLRSs: Image

Just got another update from the 111th. Some interesting things: by now most tanks in this base are the ones in this spot (pics are from September on Google Earth): Image
Like in most bases, the scrapyard has been mostly cleaned out: Image
And most of the refurbed BMPs have been dispatched and are no longer in the 111th: Image

The pace at which these BMPs are being pulled out of this base is so unexpected. Most rows are already half empty, and it's only been 2 months since they started. I was never expecting this from the 111th, it's so noticable yoh don't even need high res imagery to see it.
T-54/55s as well, but that's not so surprising.
Just to make it more clear, these were the rows of BMPs in the main area of the 111th base that didn't look (for the most part) like were missing structural components such as turrets or engines back in 2022: Image

1/ It's time to take a look at Russian tank productions and refurbishment rates! Long time delayed, I know, but finally here! This first part of the thread will be about T-54/55s, T-62s, T-64s and T-80s. T-72 and T-90s and specifics on the industry will come in the second part. Image
2/ Here’s the previous threads, first about APCs, where I also explained the fundamentals and methodology:
