Due to an unforced error by Democrats, we lost the National Labor Relations Board majority two years earlier than expected. This is a huge setback for the hundreds of thousands of workers across this country organizing for a better contract. Let me explain. 🧵
The NLRB is America's leading labor law enforcement agency. In the last 3 years, union petitions have doubled because we have a strong NLRB that supports workers who choose to form unions, ensures that corporations allow free and fair union elections, and protects union workers if Big Business retaliates against them.
The term of our previous NLRB Chair, Lauren McFerran, just expired on December 15th. She was eligible for reconfirmation alongside a Republican, who'd be paired with her. This would've secured a 3-2 Democratic majority on the NLRB for the first two years of Trump's second term. @BernieSanders did the right thing. He cleared her nomination on August 6, but the Dems fumbled it.
On the morning of the 11th, Senate Democrats had a chance to move McFarren's nomination vote through – which would've led to a secondary vote to confirm. Senator Vance, Roberts, and Manchin were absent that morning. But we delayed the vote (for what I'm hearing described as "no reason") until Vance and Manchin returned, deadlocking the vote at 49-49.
We then failed to get word to Vice President Harris quickly enough to come and deliver the tie-breaking vote. In the 90 minutes that transpired, Senator Manchin returned first, swinging the vote in the other direction and ceding the NLRB to MAGA control two years earlier than necessary. These procedural blunders have massive implications for the American people, who deserve better from their elected officials. American workers deserve an explanation.
It will hurt the young folks organizing at Starbucks and the workers organizing at Amazon. It’s inexcusable and inexplicable that we did not prioritize confirming the NLRB appointees like we do federal judges and have ceded the Board two years before we needed to.

A thread on some of my takeaways from the SVB collapse. SVB is in my district, but I did not hesitate to tell them no when they lobbied hard for Donald Trump's bill to weaken Dodd-Frank. I voted against the bill. Too many Dems voted yes.
The run on SVB is a reminder of the need to impose strong financial regulations on banks. The Republican Party succeeded in passing the bill eviscerating Dodd-Frank against the warnings of progressives like myself and @BernieSanders.
Medium-sized banks like SVB managed to avoid stress tests/liquidity and capital requirements that could have prevented this predictable disaster.

In an age of sound bites, effectiveness and leadership still matter most. It simply cannot be overstated how influential @ewarren has been during this crisis and on the best parts of the House HEROES Act.

A thread on areas where she worked with House Dems to lead boldly ⬇️⬇️
Thanks to the leadership of @BobbyScott & @MaxineWaters, the HEROES Act has $10k in student debt cancellation, including for private loans. This is identical to the 3/20 proposal by @ewarren @ChuckSchumer @PattyMurray @SherrodBrown
On 4/13, @ewarren and I called for an Essential Workers Bill Of Rights. It's popularity grew. Chairman @BobbyScott led hazard pay, child care, and health/safety protections into the bill. @NationalNurses says it "will save the lives of our nurses."

.@BernieSanders has a simple SC message: racist voter suppression hurts low income whites & blacks by enabling electeds to oppose a living wage & healthcare. Stop the powers that be from using racism to sow division. Let’s build a coalition, black & white, for economic justice.
44% of people in South Carolina are poor or low income, including 36% of white people —many who live in the corridor of shame with failing public schools and poor wages. The income of the top 1% has increased in the state by 116% while the income of the 99% has declined by 5%.
The 1% in the South would not have the power they have without racist voter suppression & gerrymandering. They use race to get majorities and then they use those majorities to support policies that hurt poor, low wealth black, white, and Latino people.

Thank you @CoreyMoore_ for allowing me to share your powerful story which shows why we need Medicare for All.

Corey didn't have choice in his healthcare decisions.

Nobody should have to go through his struggle to get the care they need.

Please read the full thread below⬇️
Corey lives in Des Moines, IA and was born with Cerebral Palsy affecting his right side. When Corey was growing up, his father had excellent insurance.

Because he is unable to be gainfully employed, receiving the healthcare he needs has been a journey from day one.
While growing up, Corey had to switch doctors and specialists frequently due to them being out of network when his Dad’s employer switched insurance providers.

Ever since, his family & doctors have had to fight insurance companies so he could continue receiving necessary care.

China hasn’t been in a war since 1979 and invests in high-speed rail, broadband, renewables and universities.

America has only been at peace for 16 years of our history and spend trillions on overseas wars.

To lead in the 21st century, we have to start investing in our people.
I believe in American exceptionalism and that free enterprise democracy should be the model over China’s authoritarian capitalism. But our endless wars are hurting our strategic ability to win. Instead we need a Sputnik like mentality at home to mobilize for the new century.
I have consistently spoken out against the Chinese incarceration of Muslims and human rights record. My point is simply that instead of getting in endless wars, America should invest in infrastructure, clean energy and education to make sure our values win.

President Jimmy Carter this weekend offered the most profound insights of any modern politician in what America must do to win the 21st century. “Since 1979, do you know how many times China has been at war with anybody?” Carter asked. “None. And we have stayed at war.”
“How many miles of high-speed railroad do we have in this country?” he asked. While China has some 18,000 miles of high-speed rail, the U.S. has “wasted, I think, $3 trillion” on military spending. “It’s more than you can imagine. China has not wasted a single penny on war.”
“And...if you take $3 trillion and put it in American infrastructure you’d probably have $2 trillion leftover. We’d have high-speed railroad. We’d have bridges that aren’t collapsing..Our education system would be as good as that of say South Korea or Hong Kong.”
