The new Labour administration have been a massive disappointment, not just about river pollution, but the whole climate and ecological emergency, which they deny i.e. they deny it is a crisis, requiring emergency reaction.
1/🧵
To support the above statement:

"SIR KEIR STARMER I will not sacrifice Great British industry to the drum-banging, finger-wagging Net Zero extremists"

2/thesun.co.uk/news/30853358/…
Typical of @Keir_Starmer, he provides no supporting argument about what he means by "Net Zero extremists". The only people he directly references are @ExtinctionR, but this makes no sense, as they are merely asking for what the @IPCC_CH and @antonioguterres are saying.
3/
It's hardly credibly, that @Keir_Starmer with all his advisers and all the resources at his fingertips, genuinely fails to understand, that these climate activists, are merely asking for what science, the UN and @antonioguterres says is necessary.

4/un.org/en/climatechan…
@Keir_Starmer would have people believe, that his fossil fuel industry greenwash nonsense of CCS will allow us to reach Net Zero. He could have just asked the leading experts who signed this letter, but you get the impression he's cherry-picking.

5/theguardian.com/environment/20…
I get that @RobGMacfarlane was mainly talking about our rivers, and the nature crisis, and this is what primarily motivates me, but they are all inexorably linked.

5/theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
I have essentially been an environmentalist since I was a boy. My first love was rivers, streams and still waters. I was pretty expert on them before I was 10. I'm in my 65th year now. I was playing close attention 55 years ago.
6/
I never remember a time when politicians in the UK, were not promising action to address the nature crisis. On almost every level, the situation has got much worse. There has been no let up in the declines for over 50 years.

7/stateofnature.org.uk
I was on the @RNNMarch on 22nd June, when all the speakers spoke hopefully about once the Tories were out and Labour were in, how things would change.

Sadly, I didn't share their enthusiasm.

8/
I've lived through enough Labour administrations in my 65 years, to know they're only marginally better than the Tories. What's more, the present Labour leadership, are all neoliberals. Sadly, most people don't know what that means.

9/
Neoliberalism is not just an insult the left use, as neoliberals try to convince the public. I could best describe it as a secret religion, a fanatical cult, both sides of the political divide, adhere to.
10/
It would be easier to convince a creationist, that god doesn't exist, than to convince a neoliberal, that neoliberalism is bad. I am not kidding, neoliberals are a type of fundamental religion, a genuine cult, a death cult.
11/
I know a lot of people will take issue with this, but then they need to explain, why nothing ever improves as regards the climate and ecological crisis, and why we are on course, towards global suicide.

12/theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
The time for talking is over. No more vague promises about addressing the nature crisis in the future. We need to draw a line in the stand. Unless we see massive action now, those promising it in the future are lying, and engaging in greenwash.
13/
We have to fight now. We need to get angry. There has been over 50 years of promises, nothing has happened, and the global situation is now dire.

If you're not angry and prepared to demand action, you're part of the problem.

It came to me the other day, how one psychological concept, groupthink, explains the whole current situation created by the unaddressed climate and ecological crisis.

We need to understand what this means for us.

1/🧵en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groupthink
However, to truly understand it, we have to understand what the group is we are dealing with here. In fact, it isn't a single group, but a nest of highly interlinked groups, from leading politicians, mainstream economists, oligarchs, corporations, and the controlling 1%.
2/
The best way to understand it, is as a clique, a grouping, where all those in it, have similar common interests. In fact, they often socialize and interact. They are not some sort of imaginary conspiracy theory, and anyway, the classic conspiracy theory is largely fictional.

This incoming Trump regime, will produce chaos and mayhem, because of their science denial, and other denial of evidence and fact. They will become very unpopular, like the previous Trump administration.
1/
However, the problem is Trump only got in power, because the Biden administration, was itself, selling the public out to vested interests oligarchs. Neither the centre, or the extreme right, are representing the public interest.
2/
Centrist regimes fail to represent the public interest, and so lying, extreme right wing politicians take advantage of this, by offering wonder cures, racist, anti-immigration, nationalist policy, which is terrible, and will soon itself become unpopular.

After the tragic LA wildfires, we've seen the usual fossil fuel industry sponsored, extreme right wing spreaders of disinformation blame it onto arson, not sweeping the woods etc, and anything but the main contributing factor, climate change.
1/
We saw the same thing after the tragic Valencia floods, and lots of other flooding events. According to these propagandists, it wasn't climate change related extreme rainfall, but the failure to clean the drains, and dredge the rivers.
2/
Also, every time there's an extreme weather event, or an out of control wildfire, exacerbated by climate change, then crude climate change denial moves up a notch, with Trump chiming in, or Mel Gibson, doing the long debunked ice cubes in a glass trick.

I received what I regard as a very threatening email, meant to intimidate me, yesterday, from the Principal Manager, Natural England, West Midlands Team. I wouldn't normally reveal emails like this, but I feel I have to, to nip this in the bud.
1/🧵 Image
The tacit implication that I might be being threatening, abusive etc, is entirely made up and slanderous.

All I had said I was going to do, was to honestly, truthfully, respectfully blog the details of what has been happening.
2/
On Monday, I attended a meeting, in which the Principal Manager, said she would act as an uninvolved mediator. That pretence was dropped at the end, when she tried to browbeat me into accepting the entirely false and contrived explanations of her staff.

@curlewcalls @CarolineLucas I totally agree with you. I've long said, all those in major decision-making positions, must have a basic certificate of competence, in general ecology, environmental science and natural history.
1/
@curlewcalls @CarolineLucas This would be similar to in many jobs, someone is required to have a basic level of competence in English, arithmetic/maths, or a certain level of First Aid certificate. I will take the latter as an analogy.
2/
@curlewcalls @CarolineLucas One of the basic aims, of first aid certificates, for those at work, is to give people, a sense of their limitations, and what they can deal with, and what they can't.

This, as I see it, is the basic problem, with politicians and the natural world.

The reason the extreme right are running circles around progressives, is simple.

It is about emotions, and their use of emotional responses, to manipulate people.

Lies, conspiracy theories, and fear of outsiders, all produce emotional responses.
1/🧵
Progressives, have failed to learn from this.

I see so many influential people, using the false argument, that we mustn't tell the full truth about the climate emergency, because of specious pseudo-explanations, that fear paralyses people into inaction - no it motivates.
2/
Extreme right wing climate change deniers have got into power, by using fear tactics, such as non-existent WEF conspiracies about taxing people to pay for Net Zero policy.

It's about time, that progressives learned that emotions matter, and fear is not the only emotion.
