The people now in charge of the Office of Personnel Management apparently don’t know how to scrub PDF metadata, and have exposed the original authors of the guidance they’re publishing. Two, Noah Peters and James Sherk, have links to the Heritage Foundation and Project 2025.
Noah Peters is the true author of the OPM Acting Director Charles Ezell’s January 27 memo providing guidance on the Schedule F executive order. Peters also authored the memo exploiting loopholes to bypass limits on political appointments. Noah Peters is the author of the OPM Acting Director Charles Ezell’s January 27 memo (archive) providing guidance on the “Restoring Accountability To Policy-Influencing Positions Within the Federal Workforce” executive order, which is being described as the “Schedule F” order because it effectively reinstates that policy under a new name (“Schedule Policy/Career”). Peters also authored the January 20 memo (archive) from Ezell, which exploits loopholes to bypass limits on political appointments.1 Both of these memos are clear steps towards achieving a primary goal of Project 2025: to expand ...

As far as I can tell, Peters’ role has in the administration has not been officially announced. However, as far back as 2023, The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 was recommending him for a position in Trump’s second administration. As far back as 2023, The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 was recommending Peters for a position in Trump’s second administration.2 Peters had previously been appointed by Trump in 2019 as the Solicitor at the Federal Labor Relations Authority,3 where he “aided and defended Trump appointees’ anti-union FLRA policies that went against decades of the agency’s own precedents” according to Court Accountability Action and State Democracy Defenders Action.4 Peters returned to private practice in 2022, but recently quietly updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect a new title of “Senior Advisor” t...
James Sherk authored the joint OMB/OPM memo on return to office implementation plans and the joint memo authorizing the federal civilian hiring freeze. James Sherk authored the joint Office of Management and Budget and OPM memo (archive) on return to office implementation plans. The guidance in the memo echoes a November 20, 2024 op-ed in the Wall Street Journal by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy outlining their “Doge Plan”, where they wrote: “Requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome”.5 The memo has earned criticism from the American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal employee union, which expressed that the directive would “underm...

James Sherk was announced as Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy on January 18.7 A White House official during Trump’s first term, Sherk was a key figure in Trump’s endeavors to purge civil servants and replace them with loyalists through an effort known as “Schedule F”. After Biden was elected, he repealed Schedule F, and Sherk slunk off to the America First Policy Institute to continue efforts to advance Trump’s policies. Prior to these positions, he was a staff member at the Heritage Foundation.
Trump has denied or downplayed links to Project 2025. These documents show that implementation is well underway, with designated personnel quietly drafting policies that are being publicly attributed to heads of federal agencies.

(unverified, obviously) r/fednews u/Throwaway918284.5h OPM employee here, we are not the bad guys HR I'm a current employee at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). This is a throwaway account for obvious reasons. I'm posting this because people need to know what's going on at OPM. I've been an OPM employee for nearly a decade and a Federal Employee for almost 20 years. I've never witnessed anything even remotely close to what's happening right now. In short, there's a hostile takeover of the federal civil service. Let me say this in no uncertain terms been compromised and taken over. The very backbone of Amer...
Under his name, they've sent numerous requests to all the agencies to collect information on gov't employees that they see as a threat to their agenda. Instructions say to send these lists to Amanda Scales. But Amanda is not actually an OPM employee, she works for Elon Musk. She wasn't even properly cleared by OPM Personnel Security. Our CIO, Melvin Brown, (also a non political career public servant) was pushed aside just one week into his tenure because he refused to setup email lists to send out direct communications to all career civil servants. Such communications are normally left up t...

The world's richest man has joined a growing chorus of right-wing voices attacking Wikipedia as part of an intensifying campaign against free and open access information. Why do they hate it so much?

citationneeded.news/elon-musk-and-…
Recent tweets by @elonmusk, Libs of Tiktok, Mario Nawfal, and others have claimed that Wikipedia is spending “$50 million for DEI”, misrepresenting Wikipedia’s actual budget and financial statements to claim Wikipedia is now “Wokepedia”. First was Chaya Raichik, also known as “Libs of TikTok,” who on December 23 screenshotted a pie chart of budget categories from the Wikimedia Foundation’s 2023–2024 annual plan.1 Apparently not bothering to read past the labels, Raichik dashed off a tweet condemning the Foundation for spending $50 million on “diversity, equity, and inclusion”,a the right’s latest bogeyman, and urging her own substantial follower base to “Stop donating to Wokepedia”.2b Musk agreed, amplifying her post with the comment: “Stop donating to Wokepedia until they restore balance to their editing authority.”3 [Ima...
Two days later, Musk retweeted Mario Nawfal, who had ripped off Raichik’s same post to produce his own, with the bold and all-caps headline “Wikipedia blows $50M on wokeness”. Nawfal added, “That’s $50 million for DEI instead of, you know, improving the actual site. … Sure, inclusion is nice, but maybe they could use some of that money to ensure they’re a reliable source of information first? Just a thought.”4 What Nawfal, Raichik, and Musk either failed to understand or deliberately misrepresented was that these budget categories they’ve dismissed as “DEI” directly support Wikipedia’s rel...
Then, Musk amplified an erroneous and months-outdated claim that Bill Clinton had been deleting information about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein from Wikipedia. Then, in the early hours of December 31, Musk reposted a video from a self-described “Conspiracy Realist/Coincidence analyser” account, “@BGatesIsaPsycho”, which had in turn taken the video from antisemitic conspiracy theoristc and self-described “OSINT journalis[t] exposing globalism” Ian Carroll. “No more donations to Wikipedia until they start being truthful”, Musk added, atop a video where Carroll claimed that “someone deleted all of Bill Clinton’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein from Wikipedia”, suggesting that Clinton himself was behind the edits. This, again, was a complete misreprese...

Newsletter: Crypto’s efforts to buy the 2024 elections paid off, and we’re in for a bumpy ride.

A recap of how unprecedented crypto super PAC spending impacted 58 Congressional races, and the pro-crypto appointees Trump is already eyeing.

citationneeded.news/issue-70/
While the cryptocurrency industry failed to convincingly prove a flood of single-issue crypto voters were waiting to hit the polls, they proved that they didn’t actually need people to care about crypto so long as billionaire industry executives had enough money to throw around.
Crypto-focused super PACs spent in 68 races across 35 states. $70.9 million went to support Republicans, and $48.3 million backed Democrats.

While some of the outcomes may have their spending to thank, much of this was a “back-the-winners” strategy. As for the Congressional races, the crypto-focused super PACs spent in 68 races across 35 states. $70.9 million went to support Republicans, and $48.3 million backed Democrats. Only ten races failed to go their way (eight if you exclude two races where candidates they backed in the primaries withdrew — and in both of those two races, the crypto PACs chose new candidates to support who went on to win). 58 races went how they wanted them to go, with either their supported candidate winning the election, or candidates they spent to oppose losing. The remaining two races — California’s House Di...
However, it’s important to note that cryptocurrency PACs were largely going with a “back the winners” strategy in this cycle — exemplified by their spending on candidates like Jim Justice (R, WV Senate) and John Curtis (R, UT Senate), who were all but assured to win their races, and whose races were called moments after polls closed. Although it took a while for me to realize this — there were times when I wondered why the crypto PACs were supporting some candidate when their opponent seemed roughly equivalent in their crypto-related stances — the strategy later became clear. As I noted in ...

Then there was this exchange. Messari’s Head of Engineering is on an H1-B, by the way.

Tweet exchange between Ryan Selkis and AdrianoFeria.eth: Selkis: "Are you a citizen or just a green card holder?" Feria: "I've been a green card holder for more than a decade and am about to initiate the process of becoming a citizen. What practical difference does that make in the context of this conversation?" Selkis: "I hope we send you back. That’s why I was asking. Sorry."
Tweet exchange between Ryan Selkis and AdrianoFeria.eth: Feria: "Under what premise would you "send me back"? I pay all my taxes, respect the law and, as a permanent resident, I am protected by constitutional rights. You probably didn't know about that last part and it might be a tough pill for you to swallow... here is the irony of you leaning about America from someone you deem to be undeserving of living here. It’s finally time to release my newest project:

This website provides a real-time lens into the cryptocurrency industry’s efforts to influence 2024 elections in the United States. followthecrypto.org
A screenshot of the front page of FollowTheCrypto.org, showing total amounts raised by crypto-currency focused PACs ($203 million) and amounts spent ($38 million). There are also graphs showing expenditures by political party, and expenditures by PAC. There is a list of the top elections influenced by crypto industry money, of the most highly-funded super PACs overall, and of recent expenditures by crypto-focused committees.
I have been working on this for the past two months, after growing more concerned about the influence this industry is trying to exert. Did you know crypto companies have spent more this cycle than the oil or pharmaceutical industries, despite being a fraction of the size? A bar chart showing the amount of election spending by sector. Data: Crypto $203,000,000,All health $193,706,986,Communications $178,671,462,Lawyers & lobbyists $172,810,610,All energy $152,567,769,Labor $120,230,704,Transportation $98,461,871,Construction $85,162,003,Agribusiness $84,400,550,Defense $25,445,961
There is more to come, including a bot that will post real-time updates about contributions or expenditures, which you can follow in advance at @follow__crypto. You can also learn more in my announcement post over at Citation Needed: citationneeded.news/follow-the-cry…

Escaped the courtroom and have my phone during lunch. Some notes from Sam Bankman-Fried's cross-examination this morning, which started around 11:25am 🧵
Bankman-Fried came off as pretty evasive in his replies, often claiming "I don't recall" or saying he didn't remember saying something "with that specific phrasing"
Asked if he directed trades at Alameda after stepping down as CEO, he said no, but he did direct company to hedge. Govt came prepared with Signal chats of him suggesting specific trades of MAPS/OXY
