Escaped the courtroom and have my phone during lunch. Some notes from Sam Bankman-Fried's cross-examination this morning, which started around 11:25am 🧵 Bankman-Fried came off as pretty evasive in his replies, often claiming "I don't recall" or saying he didn't remember saying something "with that specific phrasing"

remember golden, which was supposed to be web3's project to "fix" wikipedia by adding crypto incentives for editing?

you don't get points for editing it anymore and they've done a full pivot to AI

their website used to say that they created golden because "the world is lacking a decentralized graph of canonical knowledge that is open, free, permissionless and incentivizes agents to enter data into the graph."

Former FTX exec Ryan Salame has pled guilty to two charges in the ongoing FTX trial. Many had been wondering when an indictment would come out against him, particularly as his donations to Republican political causes had already been alleged to have been straw donations. Salame (pronounced "Salem", not "salami") was mentioned in the prosecutors' motions in limine, which revealed that they had access to some of his personal communications.

4. Ryan Salame’s Messages About Being a Straw Donor Are Not Barred by the Rule Against Hearsay6 The Government seeks to admit statements by Ryan Salame, a co-conspirator in the defendant’s illegal campaign finance scheme and unavailable declarant, about his agreement with the defendant to make political donations in his own name but paid for by the defendant. These statements are excepted from the rule against hearsay as statements against penal interest under Rule 804(b)(3).7 For example, in a private message to a trusted family member in November 2021, Salame explained that the defendant ...

A deep dive on Andreessen Horowitz's latest "State of Crypto" report. In short: they want people to keep buying crypto, and are not above publishing blatant falsehoods to convince them to do so.

The report itself is 60 pages long, so this is a long one.

Sam Bankman-Fried has filed motions to dismiss all but three charges in the criminal case against him.

The charges he is not contesting atm are:
5. Conspiracy to commit commodities fraud
6. Conspiracy to commit securities fraud
and
11. Conspiracy to commit money laundering NOTICE OF SAMUEL BANKMAN-FR...Pretrial Motion No. 5: Moti... At least part of it seems to come down to the fact that additional charges were added after SBF's extradition agreement was made.

Ted Cruz says "I'm a Bitcoin investor personally. I have a standing buy order. Every morning I have a buy of Bitcoin that comes in... I own a little more than 2 BTC."

Per his STOCK Act disclosures he bought btwn 0.4 and 1.4 BTC in Jan 2022. Hasn't disclosed any purchases since. Few possibilities here.
1) He's not been filing his disclosures.
2) He's lying to play to his Bitcoiner audience
3) He bought the remaining 0.6 – 1.6 BTC ($17,400 – $46,400) within the last thirty days, and set up the repeat buy order within that window.

Lawler wants a yes or no answer, which he is not getting and not likely to get based on Gensler's answers today so far lol

a lot of headlines are focusing on the 75% number, but it's most startling to me that 6% of US adults familiar with crypto think that the current ways to trade crypto are "very" or "extremely" reliable and safe

i feel like even most crypto true believers don't feel that way lol Image (this is from @pewresearch's latest crypto study: pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2023…)

previously people were arguing that USDC had only lost its peg on the less deep exchanges (kraken, gemini)

down just about everywhere now. going to be a rough weekend, i think. Chart of USDC:USD or USDC:USDT pairs on Binance US, Gemini, contagion from a real, sustained USDC depeg could be enormous. even before you get outside of the stablecoin world, a lot of *other* stablecoins are heavily exposed to USDC (such as FRAX and DAI) because they use it as collateral
