1/Eight years ago this week I had a vision of what is happening now, and it chilled me to my core. I was traveling to Latvia to speak at an event. I reached out to the office of the late Rep. Elijah Cummings with my concern. He called me while I was on the tarmac in Riga.

2/I shared with him my concerns: about capture of the government by Putin, about Curtis Yarvin, about Aleksandr Dugin, and Steve Bannon, and various propagandists connected to Russia. He shared my concerns and pledged to look into it.

3/I wrote up my vision into two short articles, one quoting a piece by Dugin. I shared them widely, and with people in a position to act.

4/I spent the last eight years dedicating my life — at great expense personally and professionally — to educating myself and others to the true nature and danger of this threat.

5/I was among the first to identify Elon Musk as an existential threat to the United States, a position which at first at least earned me a great deal of ridicule and derision.

6/Ultimately I have concluded that none of this is happening because people didn’t know about the threat. Clearly they did, and early. But no one in power was prepared to do what was necessary as a result of knowing. Because it would have meant disruption, and war.

7/Like any kind of deferred reckoning, the fall, when it comes, is harder still. We had the chance to arrest this so many times. But we chose not to. We pressed the ‘easy’ button until the opiates finally took our lives. Now we are paying for our failures, and we will pay dearly.

8/Be kind to each other; that’s still within our control. The rest will be the result of power games and history. If you are in a position to physically intervene safely, do so, where you can. Ultimately, Russia’s coup will go down without firing a shot.

9/And for those of you who still don’t understand that this is what’s happening, believe me: you will. You will.
