R/T @CBCNews: Thanks to Amina Zafar for highlighting the importance of Canadians having access to family doctors & other primary care providers, & how medical education can play a role. I have a few thoughts on this to share - thread 🧵 @afhto 1/9cbc.ca/news/health/fa…
Team-based primary care training has existed for Family Medicine trainees in Ontario for some time now in the form of interdisciplinary Academic Family Health Teams (FHTs). The @CFPC_e continues to advocate to spread this model nationally - . 2/9cfpc.ca/en/policy-inno…
Beyond training, Ontario has community based FHTs and CHCs (Community Health Centres) that run interdisciplinary family medicine practices. @OntariosDoctors also advocates for more of these (only 25% of Ontarians have access): @DrCatherineYu 3/9oma.org/newsroom/ontar…
An announcement by the @fordnation govt last week committed $1.4B to expand primary care teams in Ontario to reduce the 2.5M unattached patients. Looking forward to hearing more from @janephilpott after the election. Hope this idea spreads nationally. 4/9news.ontario.ca/en/release/100…
Happy to hear the new medical schools @TorontoMet, @SFU, & @MemorialU are following in the footsteps of @QueensUHealth that recently established the 1st medical school in Canada focussed on training family doctors in partnership with @LakeridgeHealth in @RegionofDurham 5/9
A strong foundation of family medicine & primary care is crucial to any successful health care system. Let’s continue to talk, collaborate and build on existing models to meet the needs of our patients and create a sustainable working environment for our providers. @queensu 7/9
The article ⬇️ by @PSwadden highlights the overcrowded ER situation in Ontario. It also suggests primary care providers are not seeing enough patients in person. Since no Family MD or nurse practitioner were interviewed, here are my thoughts: A 🧵. cbc.ca/news/canada/to… 1/17
I work at the Markham Family Health Team. Our office is open to see patients in person, including those with respiratory virus symptoms (cough, runny nose, fever), everyday. Our family docs & nurse practitioners also provide after hours care 4 nights a week & on weekends. 2/17
Many of my family physician colleagues also work shifts at our OHT Cough, Cold & Flu clinic to help take pressure off our @OakValleyHealth ER. On top of this, we are dealing with routine primary care issues like cancer screening & chronic disease management. We are busy. 3/17
