The Days of Elijah Continued – Following Him
Earlier this week on Tuesday, we read about how the LORD used Elijah in the Old Testament to demonstrate His great power as an example to motivate His people to make a good choice (life over death, light over darkness, and good over evil). Today we will see how the LORD once
again uses Elijah in the New Testament to communicate to these three disciples (and to all of us) the need to make a very important choice. As you read it, notice that the choice is still the same as it was back in the Old Testament with Ahab and the worshipers of Baal. It’s a
choice of who to follow.
In this scene, notice how the LORD is in control as always. He led these three disciples up to that high mountain (ordering their steps with no coincidences) so that they could experience this unique transfiguration experience. Keep in mind that as of
this time, Jesus was still in the middle of His 3-year adult ministry, teaching and performing miracles to give evidence of who He was. Peter (one of these 3 disciples), when asked by Jesus, had just made the bold proclamation that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the Living God
(Matthew 16:16). Yet these men still struggled with fully understanding what this really meant (as do we all). Finally, immediately before this event, Jesus had begun to predict His death and resurrection.
Then this transfiguration event happens and these 3 disciples get to see
Moses and Elijah speaking with Jesus in His full glory. Peter’s immediate response is to suggest (pray) to Jesus that they take actions that they thought would mark and glorify this special event. The voice of the Father that thundered from heaven is the overall point behind this
morning’s message for all of us today.
He (Jesus) is LORD and is One with the Father… LISTEN TO HIM and do what He says! Stop trying to figure things out on our own because we generally guess poorly. Peter was suggesting that they build altars to worship Moses and Elijah along
side Jesus. Think about that for a moment and why it might seem good initially, but is actually evil.
Finally, in this passage we are never told what Moses and Elijah were saying as they spoke with Jesus in Glory. But one of my encouragements today is that perhaps they were
discussing how much they had seen looking back from that side. Perhaps they were looking at us and telling Him that one day we too would see that all of these problems, challenges and struggles will have been more than worth it when we see from their perspective. Just hold on and
follow Him as He holds on to you today. HEAR HIM!
Jesus Transfigured on the Mount
1 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes
became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid.
7 But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.” 8 When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
9 Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from
the dead.”
10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
11 Jesus answered and said to them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things. 12 But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know
him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist. - Matthew 17:1-13

I awoke this early morning with a renewed confidence in my spirit and a reminder on my heart that the Lord is in control. This is a reminder for me, but it is not only for me. This message and this burden is for anyone who will take pause and receive
what He is speaking early this morning through His humble servant vessel. The basis of this message is on Psalms 46.
I know that all around me today (this season), things appear to be in chaos with utter pandemonium taking place everywhere. Even within me, I can often see what
appears to be random emotional and erratic responses to things that stimulate my senses and emotions. Note that it is true (do not be deceived) that there is a spiritual war going on inside of me trying to get me to respond in ways that are counter to the character and will of my

The Choice Today of Who to Follow – Convincing Evidence
In the theme that we began yesterday about following, we all have a choice everyday about who we will follow. There are very strong and influential forces in our fallen world that work overtime to get our attention and to make us follow them. When we do the result is that bad
things happen and we tend to blame God (see verses (17-18 below).
The scene in today’s scripture is a description of a famous showdown between the forces of good and evil that play out all around us still today. Ahab was a king of the northern kingdom of Israel. They had gone

The LORD Calls Us to Follow – Even When It’s Hard to Do So
Jesus calls us to give up and to follow Him even though He knows how hard it is for us to do this. He knows that deep down inside because of our fallen nature, we demand to be in control and to have our own way with EVERYTHING. But He is patient, kind and loving as He works with
us. He gently shows us things about Him (many things that we already know, have seen, or read about Him). But as He showed us last week in Exodus 32, He knows that we are a stiff-necked people. Still He doesn’t give up.
In today’s scripture, we see yet another scene of this
This was my morning prayer and praise as I awoke this morning. It is personal but I want to share it here with you. It is based on an old well-known prayer, but I have personalized it and added to it.
Lord, please give me today the boldness to do and say those things that You
have called and empowered me to do (giving me the ability to make changes). Also give me the peace and contentment to accept the things that I am not empowered to change and have not been called to do so. Finally Lord, give me the WISDOM to follow Your Holy Spirit to discern the
Let’s be honest and confess who is in control of our daily choices and decisions (from the largest to the most insignificant). If those choices are based on our own ambitions, desires, wisdom, traditions or feelings, it means that WE have control over our lives. But Jesus said we
must give up our lives in order to save them (Matthew 10:39, 16:25). Also, in the coming days, people who remain here will be required by Satan to worship him or be killed. Those who try to save their lives based on their own understanding will in fact lose them. Again, Jesus

Our Poor Decisions and God’s Tough Love
The scene for today’s devotional is one of what appears to be insanity. God’s people have just watched Him do a simply amazing supernatural work bringing them out of Egypt through the Red Sea (they had all witnessed and experienced it personally). Yet only a short time later they
convinced their High Priest (Aaron) to build this golden calf so that they could worship it as their god.
God already knew: In Exodus 32:9 after they had built the golden calf, God told Moses from Mount Sinai that He had already seen (known) these people and described them as
