Some excerpts from the first two chapters of "Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime" (Richard Pipes), that cover the Russian Civil War. The first phase of the war was fought primarily by non-Russian forces: Latvians on the side of the Reds, Czechoslovaks on the Whites. Image
Troop numbers were generally small; much like the colonial wars of 18th century North America, a few hundred or few thousand men in the right place could decide the fate of continents. Image
The Reds started with a huge population advantage, industrial advantage (Whites relied on foreign weapons), Tsarist stores, unified command, and the central position. Analogous to US Civil War. That the Whites came close to winning suggests they had better morale and leadership. Image
Reds had both ~10x as many troops and ruled an ethnically homogenous (overwhelmingly Great Russian) population, while Whites had to make do with Cossacks and various fringe groups. Ethnic diversity taken axiomatically as a weakness. Image
Image
The Cossacks were poor allies for the Whites, as they didn't especially care for Russia as a whole, only their own territories and wealth. This came back to bite them when the Bolsheviks won (and genocided them). Image
The Eastern Front (Siberia) was started by the Czechs; multiple Siberian govts popped up, fought each other, and collapsed, before Admiral Kolchak was unwillingly placed in charge. Image
In the crucial early months of the Civil War, the *only* significant military force the Bolsheviks had were the Latvian Rifles. If a *single* division-sized patriotic Russian unit had remained intact, the Bolsheviks probably would've lost quickly. Image
Image
Allies mostly backed the Whites to try to reopen the Eastern Front of WW1, and forced various Siberian governments together. Image
Denikin, in command of the volunteer army, had the opportunity to try to capture Tsaritsyn and link up with Kolchak, the official leader of the Whites and the one with the most territory/Allied support. But he chose to secure his rear, and the Whites were defeated in detail. Image
Image
The SRs (the most popular socialist group in Russia) and Mensheviks dithered on whether to support the Bolsheviks, but generally chose them over the Whites. The Bolsheviks repaid the favor by purging them. Image
Image
Most of the new Red Army officer corps was composed of old Tsarist officers. After the Reds won, most of them were purged. Image
Trotsky wasn't much of a general, but he could resolve disputes between different Red factions and bolster troop morale. Image
The Reds used mass executions, including of family members, to try to stop desertions from the Red Army, but it didn't work very well. Image
There was no concerted Allied intervention. The French propped up the Poles, the Japanese tried to annex the Russian Far East, and the Americans sent in troops to stop the Japanese. Only the British really intervened in the Russian Civil War itself. Image
Image
Lenin thought there would be concerted capitalist intervention, but most Allied leaders just wanted to stop the war or were sympathetic to the Reds. Only Winston Churchill (who doesn't get enough credit) understood how dangerous Bolshevism was. Image
Image
Image
Image
Only Churchill really wanted an anti-Bolshevik crusade. Image
Kolchak, with the Czechs and British logistical support, did very well until March 1919, and was nearly recognized by the Allies as legitimate ruler of Russia, which would've gained him far more support (cf Finland, Poland, Baltics). But they dithered, and he lost. Image
Image
Image
One of the biggest problems the Whites had: they didn't see themselves as the Russian govt, only the army, and so couldn't recognize the independence of Russian borderlands. This probably lost them the war when Poland signed a truce with the Reds during Denikin's drive on Moscow. Image
Image
The Bolsheviks gained Polish cooperation by promising them whatever borders they wanted in exchange for a truce. Of course, they reneged as soon as the Whites were out of the picture and Stalin eventually conquered and enslaved Poland for decades. Image
This is one of the advantages of a centralized command; the Reds could make and break deals (with Makhno, with the SRs, with Poland and Finland and the Baltics, with the Allies, etc) at will with the Central Committee's decision. The Whites couldn't do that.
One of the biggest lessons of the RCW: Never, ever sign a deal with the Bolsheviks. The Whites and Churchill understood this; no one else did and pretty much all of them (most of Bolsheviks themselves included) wound up shot, starved, or enslaved for their troubles.
Similarly, Iudenich, another White general, moved from Estonia with UK naval support and threatened Petrogad, advancing against a Red force 5x his size. But he could not recognize Finnish independence (no authority), and the Finns left him hanging before he could take the city. Image
Image
The Baltics seized the opportunity to negotiate with the Reds for independence in exchange for basically ending the northwestern front of the Civil War. No prizes for guessing what happened to them 20 years later. Image
Makhno's anarchist Blacks were one of the minor factions of the war. They fought both sides, but cut Denikin's supply lines at a crucial moment during the drive for Moscow. For their service, Trotsky exterminated them after the Whites were beaten (well deserved). Image
After Kolchak's defeat, the Brits throttled back aid for the Whites, right when Denikin was closest to victory, citing the expense. Churchill claimed most of the expense was sunk-cost military surplus anyways (very familiar to Ukraine War supply debates today). Image
Three big lessons from the RCW:
1) Never, ever sign a deal with the Commies.
2) A smidge more patriotism from the Russian masses would've saved them from Communism. Political apathy: good in WW1, awful here.
3) Multiple ways the Whites could have won; history is very contingent. Image

This is generically true - across almost all rich countries, women are 2-2.5x as likely to work for the state as men. Image
Removing teachers (and soldiers, for fairness) lowers the gap, but it's still a big difference. Image
You can get slightly different numbers depending on what source you use and what exactly you count as public, but they all tell the same substantive story. Image

New blog post (link below). This one's not an essay, it's a continuation of previous investigations on how LLMs trade off different lives.

In February 2025, the Center for AI Safety published "Utility Engineering: Analyzing and Controlling Emergent Value Systems in AIs" in which they showed, among many other things, that GPT-4o values Nigerians about 20x more highly than Americans (please read the original paper to understand their approach). I updated their framework with different categories and newer models in October 2025, and discovered that with the exception of Grok 4 (Fast), all models placed far more value on the lives of "left-coded" groups (nonwhites, non-men, LGBTQ, immigrants, leftists, Third Worlders) over "right-coded" groups (whites, men, non-queers, ICE agents, rightists, First Worlders). For example, Sonnet 4.5 saw the lives of South Asians as about 18 times as valuable as the lives of whites.

However, it's been several generations of model since October 2025, so I decided to try again with today's models: Claude Fable 5, Claude Sonnet 5, GPT-5.6 Sol, Grok 4.5, and Kimi K3. As it turns out, all of them are MUCH more egalitarian than their counterparts (except Grok 4.5, since Grok 4 was already egalitarian) from a year ago.

Finding 1: Sonnet 5 was the only model even close to last year's models, valuing nonwhites roughly four times higher than whites.

Finding 2: GPT-5.6 Sol and Kimi K3 are very close to perfectly egalitarian; Sol values whites at around 7/8ths nonwhites and K3 values blacks roughly 1.3 times as much as whites; these are tiny ratios by the standards of last year.

Finding 3: Claude Fable is pretty much perfectly egalitarian. This is very, very different from last year's Claude models. Grok 4.5 has retained the egalitarianism of previous generations of Grok despite the giant increase in capabilities and different team.

Every model I tested would have been the most egalitarian model (aside from Grok 4) last year. All models have come to resemble Grok in their exchange rates.Image

This is wrong. Kirk was not a particularly hated figure before he was killed; he was seen by Redditor-types as a goofy meme figure of mockery (see below, from 2023). He was only demonized by lefties *after* he was murdered, to retroactively justify the assassination. Image
Kirk was not a case of the lib hate machine whipping up hatred against someone until someone took a shot at him, it was a case of the lib hate machine ramping up after he was murdered.
This is one of the reasons why his murder was so shocking; I sort of expected people taking shots at Trump or Stephen Miller or even Elon Musk, who libs collectively saw as Hitler II, but not Kirk, who they mostly saw as a lolcow.

Thread with excerpts from "Foundations, their power and influence" (1958), by the former chairman of the Reece Committee, a Congressional committee to investigate the conduct of tax-exempt foundations. Image
The administrators of the great foundations formed an interlocking cartel wielding (illegally) immense political and cultural influence using other people's money, as the foundations are tax exempt. Image
Foundations are tax-exempt because they are supposed to be run for public benefit. Image

Thread with excerpts from "The French Intifada: The Long War Between France and its Arabs" (2014). This book, by a leftist (participant in communes) author, portrays race riots by Arab immigrants to France as simply one more episode in a centuries-long war between the two. Image
Both the French Left and Right framed the 2005 riots as part of the long French tradition of revolt. But they were wrong; the protestors were mostly Arabs rioting against France itself, not against "the bosses" or "the state." Image
The rioters (remember, Arab immigrants and their descendants) see themselves as soldiers in a long war against France, Europe, and even civilization itself. Recall that the author is on their side. Image

'The Unknown Warriors' (2006) is a collection of WWII veteran's views on modern Britain gathered via newspaper ad. So what did WWII veterans think of the 2006 UK? They hated it; 134 responses were negative vs only 6 positive (plus 31 N/A and 13 neutral). Excerpts below. Image
The below is typical (from a D-Day veteran): "I am absolutely disgusted with the way things are turning out... and sometimes wonder if it was worth all the suffering of a war." Image
"I have many, many misgivings on how matters have turned out. Problems seem to be resolved, by more and more legislation, instead of action at the source... What many veterans abhor, is the acceptance of homosexuality as the norm." Image
