Getting many questions about the demonstrations in Gaza
So here's my full assessment of the protests; their potential & limitations; genuineness & spontaneity vs outside influence; motives & goals; & their ability to actually challenge Hamas or bring the war close to an end🧵
1\ The protests seem to have started spontaneously in small numbers & limited areas. Their grievances are genuine; people are tired, desperate for the genocide to end at any cost, many want Hamas to step down from gov to take away Israel's pretext for the siege & killing
But...
2\ The protests quickly drew the interest & influence of external actors, keen to exploit Gazans' despair & pain, & this may end up undermining the movement instead of helping
e.g. Israel demanding Gazans take to the street or face death, land theft & forever war will backfire
3\ When Israel suddenly blesses Palestinians' right to expression against Hamas (while detaining, maiming & murdering those exercising that same right against the occupation), it discourages people from taking part in the protest lest they be called "Israel's collaborators"
4\ An apparent Fatah influence is detectable in some of today's protests, with the chant "Ya Shia" being added.
This chant, accusing Hamas of being Iranian stooges, was popular in 2007 amongst Fatah partisans during the Fatah-Hamas conflict that saw the latter take over Gaza
5\ Israeli media identified one of the protesters today as someone whose family affiliated with Muhammad Dahlan's Fatah
Similarly, a Fatah influence on the demonstrations will make it easier for Hamas to dismiss/delegitimize them as "pushed by an external agenda" mako.co.il/news-military/…
6\ The protesters' messages are simple, uncontroversial, & realistic: "We want to live", "End the war/genocide", "We want peace & normal life", "Hamas must step down from gov"...
Some sent reassuring messages like "We're not against Hamas, but against its rule"
7\ However, actors trying to exploit these protests to escalate the messaging to the next level (e.g. demanding disarmament, fully dismantling Hamas, foreign gov in Gaza, whitewashing Israel, framing Hamas as the sole problem) are undermining the potential of these demonstrations
8\ MANY Gazans want Hamas to step down from gov (even inside Hamas itself), many want a permanent ceasefire, but full disarmament is a very sensitive topic
The mere existence of any form of weapons in Gaza is seen by many as a deterrent against the IDF staying in Gaza forever
9\ The protest demands (end the war, Hamas step down from gov) have already been largely accepted by Hamas, who has been calling for a permanent end to the war & accepted ceding governance to a technocratic PA gov or an independent administrative committee
Israel says no to both
10\ Even if Hamas is toppled by those protests, Israel is unlikely to accept an alternative form of Palestinian governance, an IDF withdrawal from Gaza or an end to the war.
Netanyahu maintains a veto on all the above & depopulating Gaza remains Israel's priority
11\ The more Israel talks about emptying out Gaza, the lesser those protests' potential & the more strength Hamas will draw by portraying itself as the only entity that can prevent or at least challenge this scenario & make the IDF stay in Gaza costly
12\ Add to this, the continuation of Israeli attacks will probably be the biggest factor in limiting the expansion of the demonstrations.
Israeli mouthpieces called on Gazans to demonstrate in certain areas that were then bombed by the IDF!
13\ The genocide creates a rallying around the flag effect that strengthens Hamas' survival. What Israel failed to accomplish in 16 months of total war, it won't succeed to get by demanding starved & desperate Gazans march to its tune
14\ Popular demonstrations usually succeed by disrupting life, shutting down the economy, making it impossible for the government to function & its leaders to move around
Israel did all this & more already. There's nothing left protesters can do to pressure Hamas amid genocide!
15\ Ultimately, a true popular reckoning with Hamas can only happen once there is a ceasefire... at the ballot boxes
Nonetheless, the protests are a natural right to Gazans who've been through hell on their own for 16 months; no one outside has a right to lecture them

"Pay for slay" is a deeply racist Israeli trope that Palestinians are so deplorable, they'd want to get killed or imprisoned for life only for a few pennies!
The collaborationist Palestinian Authority NEVER paid anyone to attack Israel!
Israel has an identical prisoner fund🧵
2\ The PA paid financial support to Palestinians maimed or detained by Israel & families of those killed
Israel has an identical fund: "Prisoners of Zion & Families of Martyrs". It gives benefits to those imprisoned or killed for "Zionist activity" abroad or in mandate Palestine
3\ Why did the PA need this fund?
Because Israel has detained over 1 million Palestinians since 1967. All either tried in kangaroo military courts with a conviction rate of 99,7% (conviction rate of settler attacks on Palestinians is 1.8%) or never even put on trial or charged!
🚨🚨Netanyahu violates the ceasefire deal & declares Israel won’t allow displaced Gazans to return to the North today
The agreement👇 clearly says Israe should allow this unrestricted return of 1 million Gazans on day 7 (today) after the release of 7 female hostages (4 today, 3 last Sunday)
2\ Netanyahu is asking now for an additional female hostage, Arbel Yehoud, to be released today before allowing people back to the north
It’s unknown if Arbel is even alive. If she’s dead, it means her body would only be released at the end of phase 1 (as Israel itself demanded)
3\ Netanyahu claims Hamas was supposed to release female civilian hostages (I.e Arbel) today first before the 4 female soldiers
But if that’s the case, then why did Israel say nothing yesterday? Why only object now after the 4 soldiers returned to Israel?
2\ It became a Tiktok challenge during the genocide for Israeli soldiers to kidnap Palestinians, torture & humiliate them & force them on camera to wave the Israeli flag &/or sing Israel's national anthem
3\ More of the Israel Tiktok challenge of kidnapping, torturing & humiliating Palestinians:
Just read the "research" cited here by an org whose own co-founder called it "a far-right, deeply anti-Muslim racist organisation, run in the most dictatorial, corrupt & undemocratic fashion & utilized as a propaganda outfit".
As expected their report is a fraud🧵
1\ Author's main assumption is Gaza's causality figure is impossible b/c that'd mean Israel is targeting civilians & there's "no evidence" of this.
The ICC prosecutor literally charged Netanyahu with the Crime against Humanity of extermination for deliberately killing civilians!
2\ The author claims he found an error whereby 103 entries of killed men were mistakenly registered as women in a database of 44,000 causalities
That's his main "evidence" that the number of Gazan women killed by Israel has been widely inflated by a whopping 1%
🚨Israel is aiding ISIS-linked terrorists & criminals to sow chaos & famine in Gaza:
Shadi al-Sofi, a wanted murderer & son of an informant/collaborator with Israel, & Yasser abu Shabab, a drug dealer, are the main warlords responsible for looting most aid under IDF protection.
They formed gangs of over 200 armed criminals & “established a military like compound” (per the UN) in an emptied "death zone" fully under IDF control, where they looted only this Saturday night about 100 aid trucks at once.
This way Israel can absolve itself of responsibility for its deliberate starvation policy in Gaza and say “look, we’re letting aid in, it’s Hamas’ fault that food doesn’t reach people” (as claimed by Senator Jon Fetterman yesterday).
IDF soldiers never fire at those gang members as they loot aid right in front of Israeli tanks & troops in a closed military zone that no Gazan is allowed into. The IDF only fires at local policemen whenever they try to prevent the looting.
Yasser Abu Shabab was arrested by Gaza's local police multiple times in the past for drug smuggling & trading, which is often facilitated by ISIS groups in Sinai.
Hamas militants attempted to eliminate him yesterday in an attack that killed 11 of his gang, including his brother & partner Fathi & the gang's accountant. 30 others were wounded.
Shadi Al-Sofi murdered in 2020 Jabr al-Qeeq, a PLFP member whom Israel had sentenced to life & imprisoned for 15 years for killing al-Sofi's father during the 1st Intifada for spying on Palestinians for Israel.
Al-Sofi was convicted in a Gazan court & the local police captured him in a special operation in late 2020, before he broke out of prison with the help of ISIS-linked militants & was smuggled out of Gaza to Sinai, then reportedly to Israel's Negev. He returned to Gaza with the IDF ground invasion where he now co-leads the criminal gangs that loot aid & sabotage humanitarian work under IDF protection.
2\ This is the moment Gaza' police captured Shadi al-Sofi in 2020 for murdering Jabr al-Qeeq.
Al-Sofi was sentenced to death in court, before militants broke him out of prison & smuggled him into Sinai in 2021, only to return to Gaza 3 years later with the IDF invasion
3\Haaretz confirms the gangs looting aid under IDF protection are affiliated with terrorist groups like ISIS
The gangs operate just 100 meters from IDF tanks & troops, who only fire at civilians or policemen entering the area but never at those gangs haaretz.com/israel-news/20…
🚨Israel is systematically RAPING Palestinians, inc children & elderly, as a weapon of war:
2 journalists provide frightening testimonies about how IDF soldiers would randomly select a group of Gazan hostages, unleash dogs to "tear at their skin & flesh", RAPE them & film it🧵
2\ Israeli soldiers beat to a pulp then RAPED a Gazan hostage with a fire extinguisher, emptied inside him until he lost consciousness! Doesn't speak since
Another was stripped naked, soldiers put a dog on top of him to rip his flesh & electrocuted his genitals with high voltage
3\ Israeli soldiers are torturing & RAPING Gazan hostages at random; the elderly & children are not spared!
