For 15 years, left wing activists have pursued a deadly social experiment: to decriminalize, normalize, and increase access to lethal, highly addictive drugs.
They claimed that their approach was “evidence based,” referring to flimsy surveys produced by their own movement, often surveying their own activists.
All the while, they refused to take stock of the obvious, tragic human consequences around them: that deaths, overdoses and social disorder increased in tandem with the ever more zealous efforts to “destigmatize,” legalize, and facilitate lethal drug addictions.
They were abetted by many in the media & the academy, by some public health officials, and most notoriously by the governments of BC and Canada.
That’s why as Premier, I launched a radically different approach: massively to expand the availability of life saving treatment and recovery services for those trapped in the spiral of addiction. We created an almost seamless system connecting police, social service agencies,
jails, courts, local governments, hospitals, etc..
The Alberta model is not perfect, and more must be done, given the vast scale of the addictions crisis.
It took too long, but Canada has finally been mugged by reality. More *real* empirical studies like👇this will confirm what any objective person has long observed: that the radical left’s campaign to normalize and facilitate dangerous addictions was a catastrophic error, paid for with thousands of lives.
Finally, there must be a reckoning and accountability for those in public institutions most responsible for the inhumane disaster of the past 15 years in drug policy. I hope (but do not expect) that they will have the humility to admit how wrong they were, and will face professional censure and consequences if they do not.
