🧵GAZA FATALITY UPDATE: Hamas issued new list of 50,021 fatalities. Findings: (a) Fatalities age 13-55 are 72% men (b) Teen soldiers confirmed; males=65% of deaths age 13-17 (c) Natural deaths are ~8,300 of total fatalities. (4) IDF targeted combatants; NO genocide. Analysis: 1/

As in prior lists, well known use by Hamas & PIJ of teen combatants as young as 13 is confirmed, with 65% of teen fatalities male. There are ~1,500 excess teen combatants recorded (Silence, of course, from so-called NGOs). Under age 10, fatalities close to 50-50 male/female. 2/

At this point it is certain natural deaths & infant mortality are included in the Hamas fatality list. After 16 months, Hamas and its "Ministry of Health" does not have a hidden separate list of natural deaths. These are ~8,300 since 10/7, based on historical data for Gaza. 3/

This means that deaths from war since 10/7 are about 41,700, per Hamas, after subtracting natural deaths. IDF has stated it has killed ~20,000 combatants, once again resulting in about a 1:1 civilian/combatant ratio – probably lower taking into account Hamas caused deaths. 4/

Yes, there have been ~60,000 births in Gaza annually since 10/7 per UN & NGO data. Hamas list says 876 infants died since 10/7, matching expected infant mortality, corroborating inclusion of natural deaths. No, Hamas is not keeping a hidden separate list of infant mortality. 5/

What about women & children killed? After subtracting natural deaths & infant mortality, total is about 40% of war fatalities, far lower than 70% or “most” thus contradicting common but false narrative of war. Still high & tragic but ALL Hamas' fault. 6/

Note that Hamas’ list shows 15,000 excess male deaths of combatant age. I believe several thousand additional combatant deaths have not been disclosed, some in the tunnels and under rubble. At this point even Hamas admits that the IDF mainly targeted males of combat age. END

🧵Many anti-Israel biases of the Gaza fatality story are encapsulated in this article citing 50,000 killed. This is willful ignorance on the part of CNN and these journalists. Here is a review of how this article is a gross misrepresentation on many levels: 1/

The Health Ministry IS Hamas. H-A-M-A-S. There is no separate independent entity. The media knows this, everyone knows this, but CNN deliberately obscures this fact. 2/

"Authorities in Gaza" don't just fail to distinguish civilian & combatants, but HAMAS deliberately presents all fatalities as civilian as a core policy of disinformation to sway the media and international opinion. CNN knows this too but does not want to report it. 3/

FAKE ARGUMENT 1: "Hamas does not force or direct civilians to shield their military so they don't use human shields." This fake argument misrepresents international law. Geneva says upfront, merely the "presence” of civilians, even if they are unware, violates laws of war.

FAKE ARGUMENT 2: This strange argument was used recently by @peterbeinart, it goes like this: “Everyone does it so who can really fault Hamas. Do you really expect them to adhere to laws of war?" No, we do not. But then the blame for civilian deaths is on Hamas, not Israel.

The FIRST evidence UN cites to “prove” Israel targets women by policy is CNN video of woman shot in Gaza street. The UN "verified" video does not show who shot her. CNN claims IDF was positioned 200m away but that’s it. No actual evidence in video of anything just conjecture. 3/

🧵Nasty “Purim” article by @PeterBeinart uses 3 common & inane arguments to justify Hamas' use of human shields: (1) All insurgent groups use human shields so we can't expect Hamas not to. Hamas would lose quickly otherwise so it's OK... so civilian deaths are Israel's fault! 1/

(2) IDF also uses human shields with HQ in Tel Aviv. Key differences: HQ is clearly marked as military, is solely military & not co-located with civilian uses. Beinart pretends he doesn’t know all this; he knows the Pentagon is also in a civilian area and not a human shield. 2/

(3) Strawman argument: just because Hamas uses human shields does not mean civilians are "fair game" as Beinart puts it. No one argues civilians can be targeted, but human shields means when targeting Hamas civilians WILL be killed. It does not then mean it's Israel's fault. 3/

🧵CRITICAL: Until Hamas is defeated, Israel is NOT the “Occupying Power” in Gaza and NOT obligated to provide Gazans food & aid per international law (IHL). IHL defines occupation as authority over territory that can be exercised, which Israel does not have in Gaza. Analysis: 1/

There is a false claim that Geneva IV.55 obligates Israel to supply Gaza as an “Occupying Power.” But despite claims that Israel occupies Gaza (often citing an ICJ Advisory Opinion or because the UN says so), per Geneva & IHL, Israel is not an "Occupying Power" today in Gaza. 2/

The definition of “occupied” per Geneva and IHL is derived from the Hague Convention Article 42. See below from ICRC legal article. Importantly, for Israel to be considered the “Occupying Power” it means the “local sovereign” (in this case Hamas) cannot “exert its authority.” 3/
