So this is Rosenhan’s classic psychology experiment; where his subjects pretended to be mentally ill in secure facilities, and conned psychiatrists into believing that they were either schizophrenic or Bi-Polar. (1)
(2) @ToanTruongGTX has reported the findings accurately. That is, if one is taking Rosenhan’s account as an accurate one. Unfortunately, his study is full of flaws, and is in some cases - fraudulent.
(3) Firstly, not all pseudo patients reported the conditions of the institution as negative, and if they did, Rosenhan didn’t publish the data: Image
(4) Other psychiatrists viewed Rosenhan’s study with suspicion. Take for example this critique by Thomas Szasz; Image
(5) Rosenhan was given a large advance to publish his study in book form. He never wrote the book and returned the advance. Why? Cahalan has a possible explanation: Image
(6) Psychology suffers from a lack of credibility, due to many such erroneous reporting of findings. The severe critiques of Rosenhan are widely known within the discipline. Anyone sharing the experiment now needs to ensure that such critiques are included.

A short thread on conversion therapy: the experience of my Uncle.

Mr Maternal Grandmother was a lost soul. She had 5 children, starting at aged 17 (my mother), with five different men. So, on this side of the family, we are, to quote a phrase, a 'blended family'.
My 'uncle', was born a year after I was. He grew up with his father and I only really saw him at family occasions and we sometimes went on holiday together. He was very theatrical, extremely gregarious and had the nickname 'fruity'.
We'd always assumed that he was gay, but this being the 80s, and two families of Catholics, such things were left unsaid. He would disappear for months at a time and then return unannounced, always with a girlfriend.

On the Peaking of Papi

So my father had a look at my 'giant text machine' last night and utterly flipped his lid over the weightlifter formerly known as, wait for it.........Gavin. He then exploded when I played him @JessDeWahls on Radio 4
This morning, I came back to find him with my daughters (34 and 10) and my son (8). They were on a Zoom call with my wife and two other daughters (13 and 2, staying at home due to the elder's exams). My 2 year old saw me and said: 'Daddo, are you a lady?'
In a very high-pitched approximation of an English man impersonating a woman. My 10 year old said: 'Now, you know he's not.' The 2 year old replied 'No, Daddo is a man, Nono is a man. I am a lady.' I turned to my father with a quizzical look:

On the Burning of Witches, I miss you Julie - A thread

So Papi, my brother, Luigi, my son, Luigi's 3 boys and my daughter are sat on my Grandfather's boat, off Sicily, fishing for line caught tuna this morning.

Papi has not been to bed. He got rather excited trying to tell a
joke involving the actor @JosephMcGann, the character 'Pussy Galore' and inserting the lyricism of Italian into his story. So excited was he that he may have drunk all of my Uncle's Grappa (2 litres). He's asleep in a chair.

Although I am my Father's favoured son, it is Liugi
who most closely resembles him. We're sitting quietly, as our family has for centuries, when Papi awakes. He never needs any time to do so. First thing he says: 'Hey, how did Joseph like a joke?'
Me: 'I don't know, Dad. He's not responded.'
"What about Julie, what did she say?'
