🧵1: The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people has issued a powerful statement—and it deserves the world’s attention.

They categorically reject any attempt to recognize Russian control over Crimea.

Because Crimea is Ukraine. Image
2. Let’s be clear:
Any recognition of russian occupation in Crimea is not just wrong, it’s a violation of international law, of Ukraine’s sovereignty and of the rights of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people. Image
3: if the world accepted russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, we go against every law created to protect us! It would be a violation of the;
• UN Charter
• Helsinki Final Act
• UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
• Multiple UN General Assembly resolutions Image
4. It would also mean:
• Undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty.
• Denying the Crimean Tatars their right to self-determination.
• Justifying centuries of crimes and genocide committed against them.
• Encouraging today’s ongoing ethnocide. Image
5. And Let’s talk about that ethnocide russia is committing:
• Mejlis (their representative body) is banned
• Crimean Tatars face mass repression, arrests, torture
• Their culture and heritage are being erased
• Russian settlers are being moved in to change the demographic Image
Image
Image
6. Recognizing russia’s occupation also sets a terrifying precedent!
It tells every dictator that they simply can;

“Invade, annex, kill, and wait it out. The world might just accept it.”

That destroys the post-WWII system of peace and global security. Image
7. The Mejlis is crystal clear:

There is only one legitimate path to peace: complete de-occupation of Crimea and all Ukrainian territories.

Anything else risks catastrophic consequences for indigenous peoples and international law. Image
8. They now call on the world to take stronger action:
• More military & economic aid to Ukraine
• Tougher sanctions
• Legal support for victims of Russian repression
• Political and diplomatic pressure on russia.

Basic elements that should have been implemented years ago! Image
9. A reminder of the 2018 Crimea Declaration by the US:
“The United States rejects russia’s attempt to annex Crimea & will maintain this policy until Ukraine’s territorial integrity is restored.”
It’s absurd, especially given the growth of the aggression, to change this position! Image
10. The Mejlis’s position remains firm:
• Crimea is Ukraine!
– Crimean Tatars are Indigenous people of Ukraine!
• No agreement on Crimea without Ukraine & the Crimean Tatars!
• No recognition of the occupation, ever! Image
11. They will continue to work with the UN, EU, NATO, OSCE, and others through the Crimean Platform @crimeaplatform to ensure full de-occupation and reintegration of Crimea into Ukraine. Image
12. This is more than politics.
It’s about justice.
History.
Respect of international & humanitarian laws.
And the right of a people to live free on their own land.
Support Ukraine.
Support Crimean Tatars.
And remind everyone, every single day; Crimea is Ukraine. Image

🧵1: “Ukraine didn’t fight for Crimea”A narrative only spread by someone who got zero knowledge about what happened in 2014 during russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, or someone with russian talking point.

Ukrainians resisted in 2014 & keep fighting for all their land today! Image
Image

Image
2: First, lets start with the fact that russias invasion & occupation of Crimea in 2014 wasn’t an overnight coup, without planning, russia had already tried to occupy Crimea many times before and infiltrated the peninsula with pro-russian assets long before 2014. Image
Image
3: On February 24, 2014, in Novorossiysk, russian Navy ships took on board military equipment, the so-called “little green men”(russian soldiers without the insignia of the russian Armed Forces) and headed for Sevastopol. Image

This video of four little children being evacuaded from the Red Zone in Kherson, broke me!

I wrote an article about it, but most importantly is that others see this video. Of the reality many are now numb or blind to.

So I’ll post short🧵& link the full story in the last post
I want us to realize, that when we & our representatives do things that hurts the way Ukrainians are defending their nation & people, we take away the only protection these children have. And they deserve better. They deserve our help. Image
Anton is 10, Slava 4, Anna 2 & Baby Boghdan only 6 months old. Both Anna & Boghdan were born during russias full scale invasion of Ukraine.

As they emerge from the darkness of their destroyed home, Anton is holding his little sisters. Slava in one hand & Anna in the other. Image

🧵1: It’s peculiar, isn’t it, looking at the big picture.

Very timely to try to turn Ukraine into the bad guys now & scream “let’s pull out of NATO”

Because the majority of American military aid to Ukraine IS STILL JUST A PAPER PROMISE tied in contracts & production IN THE U.S Image
Image
Image
2: Of course Elon the greedy works overtime now, the American market is already pumped with aid money BECAUSE ITS PAID TO AMERICAN COMPANIES.

Convincing their base now that “Ukraine & NATO is Bad” is their hallpass to not deliver. Like a; not so subtle way of war profiteering. Image
Image
3: Surly, one is absolutely right to say The U.S. has PLEDGED large amounts of military aid.

But for now much of it has gone into boosting their own defense industry, with equipment still in production rather than reaching Ukraine. Image

1/15 Okay, please read through this tiny little thread going through the timeline of historic events of russian violations of Ukraine and then please help me answer the question in the last tweet.

I’ll be quick, I promise 👇🏼🧵

2/15:
💥First Russian Encroachments 17th Century:
• In the mid-1600s, the Tsardom of russia interfered in Ukrainian affairs, exploiting (as they always do) the Cossack uprising against Poland (Khmelnytsky Uprising, 1648). Image
3/15:
• The Pereiaslav Agreement (1654) led to a russian upper hand, and by the end of the 17th century, much of Ukraine fell under Russian control. Image

1/20 Amongst the many types of russian terror in Ukraine, there is one in particular that’s both extremely dangerous & that will be a threat for many years to come.

russia has made Ukraine the most heavily mined country in the world.

Let’s deep dive into these grim details 🧵 Image
Image
Image
Image
2/20: Approximately 23% of Ukrainian land, meaning 174000 square kilometers, has now been contaminated by landmines and unexploded ordnance, something russia has been known to spread across many countries they trample on, including Syria and Libya. Image
3/20: russia is placing a huge variety of these mines in Ukraine. And have spread antipersonnel mines in multiple areas across Ukraine, including victim-activated booby traps. The use of antipersonnel mines violates international humanitarian law. Image

💙💛David Lynch has for years demonstrated consistent support for Ukraine through various initiatives, mostly with his foundation that works for mental rehabilitation of both soldiers & civilians.

Let’s do a quick summary 🧵 Image
In 2009 Lynch visited Ukraine to promote Transcendental Meditation (TM). During this visit, he planted trees as a symbol of growth and peace.

Mr Lynch returned to Kyiv in 2017 to assist Ukrainian war veterans, and focused on highlighting and bringing awareness to the importance of addressing and understanding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Image
