When he died on Monday, Pope Francis had been on the cusp of signing into canon law a huge reform of Opus Dei, an abusive cult at the heart of the Church

Those reforms may now never happen

A THREAD 🧵 Image
Opus Dei was due to vote on a new set of statutes, which have been rammed down its throat by the Vatican, at a meeting this week

But, within hours of Francis’ death, the vote was quietly cancelled

This comes after years of Opus Dei dragging its feet

Francis issued a decree demanding reform in July 2022

It came after allegations the group was involved in human trafficking and enslaving young girls

Opus Dei demurred

It submitted revisions to its statutes that were half-hearted – which were rejected by the Vatican

Francis issued another decree demanding deeper reform in August 2023

Once again, Opus Dei dragged its feet

One Opus Dei benefactor told me the Pope was “tightening the noose” but wouldn’t “have enough time”

The bet was Francis would die before he got what he wanted

In recent months, Francis seems to have given Opus Dei the hurry-up

The organisation recently said it would FINALLY put its new statutes – drawn up in collaboration with the Vatican – to a vote

They were then supposed to go to Francis for approval

opusdei.org/en-uk/article/…
Within hours of the pope’s death, that vote was cancelled

If the strategy was to wait for the pope to die and hope the next guy will allow Opus Dei to carry on unreformed, it looks like it has worked

Everything now hangs on who will be the next pope Image
Meanwhile, Opus Dei priests in Argentina are set to stand trial in Argentina for their role in human trafficking and alleged enslavement

This is just the tip of the iceberg

It isn’t just Argentina: I have spoken to victims from right across the world

apnews.com/article/argent…
Will Opus Dei escape reform? Will the next pope allow its abuse to continue?

"Opus Dei has spent decades seeking to infiltrate the American conservative movement and has poured money and resources into penetrating Washington's corridors of power”

Great piece from @Newsweek

newsweek.com/pope-political…
Gore noted that Pope Francis had been in a "standoff" with the group, which was set to vote on new statutes over the coming weeks. Prior to his death, the group put a hold on the new statute votes.
"It is clearly hoping that the next pope will be more amenable to Opus Dei, that he will water down the reforms," Gore said.

The Far Right is Coming for the Vatican

Excellent piece from the fantastic @ninaburleigh

“The ultra-conservative wing of the US Catholic Church – a group made up of cardinals, bishops, priests and wealthy individuals – has spent years preparing for this precise moment”
“While Francis was alive, they actively sought to discredit his papacy with smear campaigns, leaking unfounded accusations that the late Pope had covered up cases of sexual abuse – and then using the right-wing Catholic media to spread those rumours far and wide”

Francis did more than any previous pope to address the abuse and exploitative of Opus Dei, a manipulative cult at the heart of the Catholic Church

But his death leaves that work unfinished. So, what’s next?

A THREAD 🧵 Image
It all started out so well

Early on in his papacy, Francis saw Opus Dei as an ally in his efforts to clean up the Vatican after years of scandal and corruption

He picked several Opus Dei figures to oversee those efforts Image
But the relationship soon soured

One Opus Dei priest with a critical role was found to be a double agent who leaked documents to undermine Francis’ reforms

He was found guilty and imprisoned

Do you think @markwahlberg realises that @HallowApp, the Catholic prayer app he fronts, is actively promoting Opus Dei – a group accused of human trafficking, child grooming, drugging its members and spiritual abuse – this Lent?

🧵 A THREAD

foxnews.com/media/mark-wah…
Opus Dei has been crowing about the partnership with Hallow and Wahlberg all week.

Hallow launched its Lent challenge on Wednesday.

This year, it is "inspired" by the The Way, a book written by Opus Dei's controversial founder Josemaría Escrivá.

For the whole month, they'll be celebrating a man who:

- supported Franco
- said it was "impossible" the Nazis killed six million Jews
- used listening devices to spy on his followers
- decided women (but not men) had to sleep on wooden boards because their flesh is weaker

Federalist Society boss overheard telling private gathering that Chief Justice John Roberts was a solid pick for the Supreme Court because “he attends an Opus Dei evening of reflection once a month”

When the Federalist Society advocated for Roberts to be nominated to the Supreme Court in 2005, it was the first time it had campaigned publicly for a particular candidate

Leonard Leo actively campaign for him to be nominated - we know Leo is close to Opus Dei, and is a director at the Opus Dei-run Catholic Information Center in DC

Nice to see Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, taking time out of his busy Project 2025 schedule to spend some time with leaders of the European far-right in Madrid at the weekend

I wonder if he got to visit the Opus Dei national headquarters in Madrid while he was there 🤔

I see he and Peter Thiel are due to attend another right-wing conference in London in a few weeks - fronted by Jordan Peterson, whose wife was recently converted to Catholicism by Opus Dei

The conference aims to “re-lay the foundations of civilisation”
