Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna was tortured to death in Russian captivity, The Guardian
Her body was returned without eyes, brain, or larynx. Burn marks on her feet. Stab wounds. Broken rib. Signs of strangulation. 1/
Viktoriia entered Russia to investigate FSB torture sites in July 2023. She was arrested in Enerhodar and taken to the Melitopol basement called “the garages.”
Witnesses say the FSB beat her, stabbed her limbs, shocked her with electricity, and left her body bruised and cut. 2/
Then she was moved to SIZO-2 in Taganrog. Waterboarding, electric chairs, forced starvation, and beatings are routine here.
Her cellmate: Viktoriia stopped eating, lost 30kg. She lay curled behind a curtain, unable to lift her head. I had to hold her up so she could stand. 3/
Victoriia called her parents in August: I was promised to be home in September. Mom, Dad, I love you.
She was taken from the cell on Sept 8, ready for a prisoner exchange. Roshchyna never returned.
Russia’s military police told her father she died on Sept 19. 4/
The body came back mutilated, mislabeled as male. Her neck bone was broken. Head shaved. Organs missing.
Visual identification was impossible.
Only a tag on her leg read: V.V. Roshchyna. The DNA matched her parents. 5/
Russia denies Victoriia’s detention. She was erased from the record.
The Taganrog prison director: She was never there. Not in the database. 6/
Sevgil Musaieva about Roshchyna: She had no life beyond reporting. It was her mission.
Viktoriia Roshchyna had exposed Russian torture sites, Wagner activity, and child abductions. She died gathering the names of FSB agents involved. 7X
Scott Bessent about the mineral deal: It's a win-win situation [for Ukraine and the U.S.; true]. The Ukrainians can see a path to economic prosperity once this conflict ends, and the U.S., U.S. businesses, U.S. best practices, and U.S. capital will be part of that. 1/
Scott Bessent: This isn't one of those rapacious Chinese deals. If the Ukrainians don't prosper, the American people don’t make money. We’re fully aligned in terms of economics. This is a total economic partnership, not just rare earths, but also infrastructure and energy. 2/
Scott Bessent: Earlier, President Trump told Zelenskyy, 'You have no cards.' But now he has dealt Zelenskyy a royal flush.
Now, with this deal, there’s no daylight between the U.S. and Ukraine, which strengthens our negotiating position with Russia. 3/
Trump on the “big beautiful bill”: 100% expensing for U.S. investments, no tax on tips, overtime, or Social Security, and interest deductions for American-made car purchases, boosting take-home pay for families and driving economic growth. 1/
Trump: Over 250 years later, in a proud, free America, we rejoice — God answered prayers. This new administration will make you proud and strong again. In just 100 days, world leaders are calling. America is respected again after years of decline. 2/
Trump: Just 6 months ago, no one wanted to join the military or police. Now, we have the highest number of recruits ever: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard — all full with waiting lists. We’re choosing the best, and our police forces are growing strong again. 3/
Reuters: Russia has tripled its 2025 budget deficit forecast – from 0.5% to 1.7% of GDP – due to the risk of prolonged low oil prices.
Spending will rise. Defense stays intact. 1/
Russia’s finance minister, Siluanov, lowered the 2025 oil and gas revenue forecast by 24% – from $133B to $101B.
The overall deficit estimate grew from near $46B. 2/
Other revised assumptions:
- Urals oil price: down from $69.7 to $56 per barrel
- Inflation: up from 4.5% to 7.6%
- RUB/USD rate: adjusted from 96.5 to 94.3

Trump approves first direct commercial arms sale to Ukraine for $50 million.
Yesterday I thought that the new framework agreement strengthens Ukraine position with the U.S. Today we’re seeing the results. 1/
Trump administration has notified Congress of its decision to authorize weapons exports to Ukraine under the Direct Commercial Sales mechanism. A deal exceeds $50 million. 2/
That’s a partial unfreezing of US military aid to Ukraine. The license covers weapons, technical data, and defense services. 3/
