Can the Prime Minister get out of his current bind? Experience says that where no other politician could find wiggle room, Boris Johnson always can. Assuming that Sue Gray’s report leaves the PM still standing, then he needs to “burn up the road”.
1. Apologise. Make an effusive and sincere apology. Take full personal responsibility. Admit fault. Commit to being a changed person.
2. Draw a line under it. Move a no confidence motion in the Commons. Make your MPs choose between backing you or Christian Wakeford and Labour.
3. Don’t talk about it again. Refer to your apology, and the confidence vote. And say the rest is sub justice.
4. Spend, spend, spend. Defer the NI rise. Increase the Warm Home Discount. Make Rishi Sunak back you or sack himself.
Advice to No 10 staff facing a police inquiry, from one who has.
1. Get a solicitor. They will get you a good QC. Listen to them and take their advice. Make sure your employer is paying.
2. Don’t be interviewed on the premises. Or in a police station. There are plenty of discreet places you can go to. Let your solicitor liaise about venues and timing.
3. Answer the questions you are asked. Not the questions you think you are being asked. Don’t fill the silence. Wait for the the next question.
Anyone who cares about the future of progressive politics in the UK needs an honest post mortem on what was a disastrous defeat for Labour. We all have our own theories. But this is a time to be open to different perspectives too. (1)
Reading outside your comfort zone is challenging but rarely uncomfortable. I heartily recommend @leninology, @ofthesparrows, @shirkerism, @AyoCaesar, @Tom_Gann, @graceblakeley I don’t always agree with them - but it is important to work out why. Support their Patreons too. (2)
This isn’t an exhaustive list. @openDemocracy & @NewSocialistUK are good places to find pieces too. @AdamRamsay on the failure of Labour to confront the crisis of the UK State. And @AnthonyBarnett. Chantal Mouffe’s ‘For a Left Populism’ is more relevant than ever (3)
