1/ BREAKING: Israel announces approval and plan to launch the next major phase of operations in Gaza, Operation "Gideon’s Chariots"— one that appears guided by a phased strategy rooted in lessons from past conflicts: Clear, Hold, Build. Here's what it means—and why it matters. 🧵
2/ Israel's goals remain unchanged: secure the release of all hostages, dismantle Hamas’s military and governing capabilities, and ensure that no threat can reemerge from Gaza to endanger Israel again.
3/The plan is a major shift from what has been implemented in Gaza so far, instead of raiding in, limited clearing, and withdrawal operations, the IDF will operate with full force, expand its presence across Gaza, and remain in every captured area.
4/ The plan appears to have three defined phases:
• Phase 1: Prepare—IDF forces shape the battlespace, isolate Hamas, allow for hostage negotiations and pre-position for sustained ops.
• Phase 2: Clear and Hold—methodical clearing of Hamas presence and capabilities, area by area, with IDF maintaining control.
• Phase 3: Build—govern, stabilize, and support local alternatives to Hamas.
5/ Civilians will be temporarily evacuated from main combat areas in northern and central Gaza to southern humanitarian zones recently cleared by IDF forces, to separate civilians from Hamas militants and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
6/ This is not new in war. In Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine, General (ret) David Petraeus & Sir Andrew Roberts describe how this strategy has worked globally—from Malaya to Iraq. Done right, “Clear, Hold, Build” is how forces can be defeated and kept out of power—not just by killing fighters, but by restoring new governance.
7/ There are many variation of this approaches such as:
• Ink-blot strategy—secure small areas and gradually expand control outward like ink spreading on paper.
• “Safe neighborhoods”—walled zones where local governance could operate under IDF protection.
8/ Urban warfare isn’t ultimately won by firepower alone. It’s won when a population believes that something better is possible. That’s why the IDF’s new approach focuses on clearing, holding, and eventually building—not just destroying Hamas.
9/ The plan faces real challenges. Hamas hides among civilians, uses hospitals, mosques, and schools to shield itself. It thrives in chaos. But this next phase is designed to shrink that chaos with order, sequencing, and presence.
10/ A key part of the plan: aid will now be delivered directly to Gazans—cutting Hamas out of the distribution loop. This removes one of the group’s main tools of power: control over food, fuel, and medicine.
11/ But there's a problem: the UN has said it will not assist. Despite one of the humanitarian crises, the UN has refused to support aid delivery unless Hamas regains a role.
14/ This will not be easy—and it will not be quick. Success requires a sustained IDF presence, large-scale force commitment, and the evacuation of civilians—a process Hamas actively sabotages. Clearing dense urban terrain and tunnel networks is slow, dangerous, and lethal. The enemy always gets a vote.
15/ Many unknowns remain. President Trump has proposed letting civilians who want to leave Gaza do so—but Egypt continues to block any such movement, refusing to assist or open the Rafah crossing.
16/ Israel is preparing to clear and hold territory—but it also intends to build. Security, aid, governance, and hope. The goal is twofold: to shatter Hamas’s belief that Israel lacks the will to dismantle its grip, and to give Gazan civilians hope that something better can come after Hamas.

War 101 - What is a war crime? Who can call it. 🧵
1. Armed Conflict Must Exist - War crimes can only occur in the context of an armed conflict—either international (between states) or non-international (between a state and organized armed groups).
2. Violation of a Law of War - The act must violate a specific rule of international humanitarian law/law of armed conflict, especially rules protecting civilians and combatants who are hors de combat (out of the fight). Examples include:
- Intentionally targeting civilians
- Torture or inhumane treatment
- Taking hostages
- Using banned weapons (e.g., chemical weapons)

LIE - 45,028 civilians have died in Gaza.

This number is provided by the Hamas Gaza Health Ministry. It does not distinguish between combatants or noncombatants in Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza declared by Israel after the invasion of Israel and war crimes to include rape, murder, mutilations, burnings of civilans and taking of hostages committed by Hamas on October 7th. As of 2 months ago the IDF said they had killed 20,000 Hamas terrorists. youtube.com/watch?v=ROXiZF…
LIE - 45,028 people have died in Gaza since October 7th.

The number is generated by the Hamas Gaza Health Ministry. Many reports have shown the methodology of how the number is generated, the names that make up the list, statistical inconsistency, and false information on the list. This is includes recent studies by the @HJS_Org and others.

The demographics of the names on the list have been revised by the Gaza Health Ministry and the United Nations during the war. The demographics of the names on the list have been proven to contain many errors.
LIE - Israel has killed 45,028 in Gaza.

The cause of death of the names provided by the Hamas Gaza Health Ministry is not listed. A large quantity of the rockets launched by combatants in Gaza have landed inside Gaza killing people in Gaza. Many videos show Hamas killing Gazans since October 7th.

Hezbollah Pager Operation. A few personal thoughts.
1) Historic & unprecedented. I cannot find a similar intelligence/military operation with such secrecy, lethality, ingenuity, audacity, impact. While there have been other major intelligence operations in war (breaking Enigma, various spies inside governments) or surprise attacks (D-Day, Pearl Harbor, Inchon landing) but nothing so targeted lethal use of force, precise - proportionate & distinction, as many enemy hit, over such a wide geographic area.
2) Physical Impactful. In a single operation, the terrorist group Hezbollah was significantly impacted. Not only in physical injuries - unknown but reported in the thousands. The attack also exposed the Hezbollah network not just in Lebanon but in other places in the Middle East where Hezbollah agents or affiliated agents were carrying this specific pager issued by Hezbollah.

Let's review my research and scholarship on Israel's operations against Hamas in Gaza since some new people (Hi, nice to meet you) are - he is only xx, was only xx in service, has only studied xx.
My bio is public knowledge. I served 25 yrs active duty as an infantry soldier, NCO, officer with 2 year long combat tours in Iraq. I started studying urban warfare academically in 2014 while assigned to the Chief of Staff of the Army's Strategic Studies Group looking at megacities and advising him (top 4 star general of the U.S. Army) on our research. I have served as Chair of Urban Warfare Studies @WarInstitute since retiring from active duty in 2018. johnspenceronline.com/bio
I am also the Director of Urban Warfare Training, as a Colonel in the California State Guard, with the 40th Infantry Division, co-leading and instructing in the 40th ID annual Urban Operations Planner Course, the only division/brigade level specific urban warfare course.

I find myself in conversations about post-conflict or after major fighting operations often now. How a military actually fights an insurgency. Emplaces a new power & works to create stability, while preventing the previous power from reemerging. people want simple frameworks. 🧵
Most people have heard of the clear, hold, build framework. But even within that there are other frameworks that were used as “ways.”
