“I don’t know and will never know if my mum actually died a peaceful death or if she was suffering”
@aliciaduncan_xo lost her mum in October 2021 through the “Medical Assitance in Dying” MAiD legislation in Canada.
Her testimony and warnings about #AssistedDyingBill
A 🧵
1/6
“People can slip through the cracks…My mum was not terminal but was approved because she was frail and because she was starving herself…My mum needed help to live but was helped to die instead”
2/6
“My concern here in the UK 🇬🇧 is that people are being told the same things that we’ve been told”
“& there’s chasms for people to fall through and vulnerable people will die”
3/6
“What has happened in Canada should be a warning sign to the UK”
Within 5 years the law in Canada was expanded and people with Type 2 Diabetes, Bipolar, & Depression have been approved for euthanasia.
“The top two reasons people are citing are feeling lonely or feeling like a burden”
4/6
“I know of a lot of elderly people that are now afraid to go into hospital because they are afraid that they're going to be pushed MAiD”
“my concern is that people don't trust their drs anymore to provide them care, because they're worried that the Dr might actually provide death instead.”
5/6
“What I want to say to people in the UK is that this is an issue that cannot be rushed.”

This Has Gone Beyond Abuse – It’s Now Dangerous. If It Doesn’t Stop, How Will It End?
In 2017, I shared a post by accident, a genuine mistake, deleted within minutes. Yet for 8 years, hate-fuelled lies and misinformation have been spread relentlessly, with no end in sight. (1)
6 years on from the murder of my constituent Samia Shahid in Pakistan, we are yet to receive any justice.
Sadly, after years of fighting for this case, I think there is little hope that the justice system in Pakistan will ever give Samia the justice she deserves.
🧵 thread
On 14 July 2016, Bradford girl Samia Shahid flew to Pakistan to visit her family. 6 days later she was found dead.
At this point, her husband and I called on the Pakistan police to investigate this murder. I also provided representations to the Prime Minister of Pakistan at the time.
The autopsy report found that she was brutally raped and strangled to death. (3)
Two years ago, Salma Yaqoob ran against me in Bradford West, a campaign that drove me to feeling suicidal. Now she wants to run for West Midlands Metro Mayor.
I think @UKLabour members have a right to know what happened in 2017. THREAD /1
All my life I’ve campaigned against patriarchy and I stand on a platform of reform. Here I wasn't the "most Muslim"
It pains me to see “Galloway politics”, and the vitriol that brings with it, happening all over again now in the West Midlands. /2
BIRMINGHAM MAIL: "It does seem fair to say that Ms Yaqoob chose to make the wearing of the hijab an issue in the election - and presented the fact that she wears one, and Ms Shah doesn’t, as a reason to vote for her." /3
Mark Field must be suspended from the Conservative Party & the Whip. Action should be taken against Tory MPs defending him (listed below). These comments normalise violence against women. He grabbed a woman by the neck and pushed her up against a pillar. There is no excuse. 1/10
Crispin Blunt MP said Mark Field should be “commended” for his violence towards a woman, which appears to be assault.
Bob Stewart MP on @BBCWorldatOne said "poor old Mark lost his job". His sympathy is with the aggressor, not the victim. He said "you can't hold her by the waist.. you can’t hold her by the chest" So it's fine to grab a woman by the neck as it's better than grabbing her chest 3/10
