A lot of you probably saw how Hasan Piker was questioned at the border reentering the USA. We have followers who travel all over the world, so we wanted to share some tips for dealing with searches of your phone at the border.
It IS LEGAL for law-enforcement at the border or a port of entry to search your phone. This goes for both citizens and non citizens. Generally, law-enforcement may do so without a warrant. The chances of getting searched are quite low, but never 0.
Before you leave
- Make sure your phone OS is fully updated, since updates usually include latest security fixes
- Make backups of everything on your phone, so if it gets seized, you’ll still have all of your stuff
- We’ve gone over this in more depth before, but make sure your phone is protected by a strong password. Make sure your it can’t be unlocked via fingerprint or face scan
At the border
- Turn your device off at entry point to counteract passive data collection methods
- Don’t open your phone or give the password to officers. They might try to convince you or lie to you and say that you have to unlock your phone, but that’s not true. Don’t do it.
If you won’t unlock for officers, they can seize your phone for an indeterminate length of time (that’s where the phone backup comes in), but at least they won’t know what’s on it. If you’re running, say, a newer iPhone and updated OS, they likely won’t be able to crack it either
If you’re a citizen, you can’t be kept out for not unlocking your phone. For green card holders, there are probably some legal Qs that we aren’t qualified to answer. If you’re just coming to visit, however, you can be turned away at the border for not submitting to the search.
Our post is just the extreme basics. Electronic Frontier foundation has a ton of free and more in depth info covering phones and other devices.
This post prepared with assistance of an attorney. This is not legal advice and YPT is not your lawyer.

“Short” guide to the main factions of the Syrian Civil War. Lots of nonsense out there. Some of it is just people not being informed, but some is pro-Turkish, or pro-Russian, or pro-Assad swill (especially left pro-Assad crap).
“Slow is smooth, smooth is fast” is a fudd canard. It’s just silly on its face. Fast is fast, and we can measure speed by using a shot timer. Sometimes we get the question, when should I start working with a timer and pushing speed? Probably sooner than you think.
Remembers: skills like shot confirmation, recoil management at speed, and how to press the trigger quickly at speed can only be practiced while shooting fast. Practicing these slowly will not develop these skills. Slow fire will not tell you how the gun behaves at speed.
The drills to start practicing these skills are actually really simple. Shot confirmation and recoil management? Doubles drill. Trigger control at speed? Trigger control at speed drill.
We’ve written about politics in Georgia (Sakartvelo) before and the conflict between Georgian Dream and its political opponents. Georgian Dream has released new ads in the capital Tbilisi which amount to political hostage-taking and blackmail.
Pic 1 is the theater the Russians destroyed in Mariupol, Ukraine with the caption “no to war,” and the election numbers of the Georgian opposition. The right side shows Senaki Theater with the caption “choose peace” and Georgian Dream’s election number.
Pic 2 shows a bombed out church in Donetsk contrasted with the Sameba Kathedral in Tblisi. Pic 3 shows 2 contrasting classrooms. Both photos have the same captions.

Quality of life item: USPSA carry optics extended mags
We’ve been talking a lot about competing USPSA as a training tool to push yourself and develop the skill of performance on demand. If you’re shooting Carry Optics class, why not get some stendos legal for the class?
If you’ve shot the class at all you’ve probably notice that despite the name, most people are shooting full size handguns with extended mags. There’s nothing stopping you from you getting good with stock mags (like 15 rounds on your Glock 19)
on a small gun, but it is nice mentally to not have to think so hard about reloads, and some shorter stages you may be able to shoot without a reload at all, or at least with fewer. The USPSA rulebook has the specifics magazine dimension maximums. But just to make this easy:
Dmytro Mrachnik is a former mortarman and friend of YPT. Dmitro is a longtime Ukrainian antifascist, and he’s been in the army fighting Russia since the full scale invasion in 2022.
As we’ve often talked about on YPT, so many Ukrainian (and Belarusian!) antifascists have been fighting Russian invasion since 2022. Dmytro himself fought in Kharkiv and Bakhmut, where we supported him with car repairs.
And recently, we were so grateful to him for sharing his experiences with us on the Tiger Bloc Podcast. Go check out the episode if you haven’t, great listen.
How to use LPVO with bullet drop compensator (BDC) reticle
BLUF: you will need to confirm your reticle in live fire for your specific ammo and setup.
Low power variable optics (LPVOs) have become pretty popular lately for those looking to stretch the legs on AR rifles…
while still retaining the ability to have a 1x for shooting closer in with no magnification. A lot of the time, LPVOs will have a BDC reticle like the one in the post picture. This Vortex Venom reticle has pre-marked holdovers for 300, 400, 500, and 600 yards.
Seems easy right? Just hold over the target, press trigger, and make hit. But read the fine print. Couple things to keep in mind.
One is the zero distance. The subtensions won’t correspond unless you zero the optic in the right place. Here, reading that manual, that’s 50 yards.
