Prayer – Matthew's Subtle Warning about Pride
We noted earlier in this devotional series about prayer that Luke’s account is different from Matthew’s account in subtle ways even though they are describing the same event. Luke was a physician and a detailed historian. He was not even Jewish (was a gentile) and did not always
personally witness what he wrote about. He often conducted interviews and his gospel represents a detailed account of the events based on facts provided by multiple reliable sources. Remember that he included the example of the person who needed bread and came knocking
persistently at his friend’s door at midnight.

But Matthew’s gospel is written describing many of the very same events surrounding Jesus from a very unique perspective. Matthew was Jewish and his gospel has woven all through it the subtle message that “Jesus is LORD, the
promised Messiah” and the arrogant Jewish leaders with their religious traditions are not. You see an element of this in his description of the LORD’s prayer. When we look at the examples that precede and follow Matthew’s description of the model prayer, we see that Matthew is
telling a subtle message to the Jews (and to us today).

In all 3 of these examples (from Matthew 6:1-17), there is a central theme about hypocrisy and the motivation behind everything that we do. Being Jewish himself and understanding what tended to motivate them, Matthew is
quoting the words of Jesus when He warned them NOT to do whatever they did in order to gain attention for themselves and to please people around them.

Although subtle, this message is vitally important because of its connection with the original sin that got Lucifer kicked out
of heaven… pride. It can quickly contaminate and destroy whatever we do because it changes the focus of the glory from being on God to being on ourselves. In these three examples, Matthew is showing how this can happen:

1) When we do good deeds and charitable works for others
2) When we pray, and
3 When we fast.

He says that God knows our hearts and our true motivation. If that motivation is to seek our own glory in THIS world, then that glory (the temporary fool’s gold) will be our only reward. In the end, it will be just dust in the wind. Just as
it was with Jesus when He lived here among us as a man, it is important for us to have a meek and humble spirit in everything that we do. Our true motivation should always be to seek the will of the Lord and to please Him.

Now let’s read and ponder that first example that Jesus
describes at the beginning of Matthew chapter 6.

Do Good to Please God
1 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a
trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your
charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly. - Matthew 6:1-4

Prayer – The Key Ingredient for Power
A few years ago I learned a very valuable lesson when it comes to cooking. I was making one of my large batches of home-made Belgian waffles from scratch. In preparing the batter, I overlooked adding one very key ingredient (salt). The end result was a large batch of waffles that
looked good but were utterly tasteless. It is ironic that they still contained the proper amounts of sugar and vanilla, but without the salt, they tasted bland (I forced myself to eat them but I wanted to throw them out). I think this was the metaphor that Jesus used when He said

Prayer – Persistent and Powerful

Yesterday I mentioned that the scene where Jesus gave His model for prayer is described in the Gospels of Matthew & Luke. I then went through Matthew’s description of that model. Today I want to look at Luke’s account because,
as a thorough historian, Luke covers some interesting details that Matthew did not. First, it is Luke who describes at the beginning of chapter 11 how the disciples watched Jesus as He prayed and then asked Him to teach them to pray (just like He did). So Jesus sat down with them

Prayer – Understanding Our Most Powerful Weapon
Early this morning the LORD woke me up with this powerful theme because He knows that it is one of my struggles. He knows (as you will see in this devotional) how much I often struggle internally with the way that I observe this weapon being miss-used all around me. So, I lay
there actually for several hours pondering this very sensitive assignment (it has the serious potential to offend so very many even though it came from a tender heart that just wants to help us to be all that we can be).

So when I finally got up, He told me not to attempt to

The War of Fear – Just Stop It!!
This is a pattern of messages that continues from the events of 5 years ago this week. This was the word that the LORD awoke me with that morning. Once again it was a very timely word (a right-now word). It was a familiar word that He gently spoke in the beginning of that
situation and now He is saying it with much more emphasis.

We are in an increasing war today because the enemy knows very well that his days are numbered and that his time is short. The day of justice is coming, the light will be turned on and the darkness will have to flee.

The Suffering Church vs the Compromising Church
This morning’s devotional was given to me and inspired by recent events that took place 5 years ago this week right here around me in Texas. As I watched and pondered them, the LORD pointed me to them and then to the story of two churches. Just as it was when He told John to
write these letters in the book of Revelation, this message is about both churches and individual people and all of our interactions with situations.

I was inspired by the suffering church as I watched the case back in May 2020 of a woman in Dallaswho was jailed for opening her

Signs of Warning from Isaiah
This morning’s devotional was inspired by verse 5:20 based on events that we see happening right here in our midst today in our communities. The general theme in this and the surrounding verses is when men create a “new normal” that is distinct from and contrary to God’s normal.
Our country was founded on very clear principles of freedom (our constitution) that were based on freedoms and rights given to us by our Creator, God.

Isaiah is giving the people the warning that when you see those principles being distorted (reversed), watch out for God’s
