This man paid $650,000 to learn one idea from Warren Buffett.

That idea helped Monish Pabrai turn $1M into $600,000,000+

His “Dhandho” investing philosophy is so shockingly simple anyone can do it.

Here are 8 of his best investing rules: 🧵
(No. 6 is mind-blowing) Image

June 25, 2008.

Monish Pabrai sat across from Warren Buffett at a steakhouse in Omaha.

He had just paid $650,000 for this lunch.

No agenda. No notebook. Just one question on his mind:

“What mental model built Berkshire Hathaway?”… Image
Buffett answered in his usual style. Simple words, with deep implications.

That conversation changed how Monish approached everything:

• Risk
• Timing
• Bets
• Patience

And it became the foundation of his $600M fortune.

Here are those 8 rules Pabrai lives by: Image
Rule #1:

Great investments feel wrong at first.
Pabrai’s best opportunities all felt “off.”

They looked broken. Risky. Ugly.

But underneath?

• Asymmetric upside
• Very limited downside
• A math equation most people couldn’t see

(video credit @ShaanVP & @myfirstmilpod)
Rule #2:

Look for bets that hit you like a 2x4.

He doesn’t look for “good” businesses.

He looks for anomalies. Situations where the price makes no sense.

“If you need Excel to justify the bet, pass.”
If the math isn’t obvious, it’s not worth your money. Image
Rule #3:

Most ideas should go in your “Too Hard” pile.

Buffett keeps a literal box on his desk labeled “Too Hard.”

Monish follows the same principle.

“99% of businesses are too complex to handicap.”
The edge is in ruthless clarity and knowing what to ignore. Image
Rule #4:

You only need 1 great idea every few years.

Buffett made 12 needle-moving decisions in 58 years.

Monish looks for 1 killer bet every 2–3 years.

“Spend most of your time doing nothing. Then bet hard when the odds tilt.”

Slowness is a superpower.
Rule #5:

Circle of competence is everything.

Monish calls it being an inch wide, and a mile deep.

One investor made billions buying real estate only within 2 miles of Stanford.

The lesson:

“You don’t need to know everything. You just need to know one thing well.”
Rule #6:

Risk is different from uncertainty.

Wall Street punishes companies with uncertainty.

But Monish says:

“High uncertainty with low risk is where the gold is.”

His best investment returned 80x, after everyone thought the business was dead. Image
Rule #7:

Use the ‘cloning’ mindset.

Don’t reinvent the wheel.

Monish reads 500+ writeups from Value Investors Club and SumZero.

He studies Buffett’s annual letters like scripture.

“Learn from the best. Then wait until their playbook fits your pitch.” Image
Rule #8:

Avoid leverage. Avoid complexity. Avoid speed.

One of Buffett’s early partners lost everything, because he used margin.

“Charlie and I knew we’d be rich. We just weren’t in a hurry.”

Slow, boring, obvious = unstoppable. Image
Final takeaway:

You don’t need a finance degree.
You don’t need Wall Street connections.
You don’t even need Excel.

You just need:

• Patience
• A clear mind
• The ability to wait for “can’t lose” bets

That’s Dhandho. Image
Monish’s strategy is finding gold. Slowly.

Finding the perfect investment that’ll give him up to a 100x return.

This legendary investor worth $2,200,000,000 just broke the internet.

Howard Marks dropped 79 years of his best investing wisdom in 45 minutes, and it honestly blew me away.

Here are 10 invaluable insights from one of the greatest investors in history: 🧵 Image
#10: Risk lives in human behavior, not spreadsheets

Markets don't crash because of fundamentals.

They crash because of people’s behavior.

"The riskiest thing is believing there's no risk."

When euphoria peaks → danger lurks.

When panic spreads → opportunity emerges.
#9: The "average" return is a dangerous myth

The S&P 500 averages 10% annually over decades.

But here’s the reality check: It's rarely between 8-12%.

Markets either soar 20%+ or crash 15%+.

The average masks the volatility, and is not often the norm.

I hit 10,000 newsletter subscribers
In just 6 months,
working 3 hours a week.

Here’s how I did it 🧵” Image
Let’s get real.

It took 2 years and a whole slew of work.

Here are the 10 things that actually work 🧵
1️⃣Write at least 1 in-depth article every week.

This has become more than 150 articles published or more than 300,000 words.

It’s not just about getting the content out or being consistent.

The focus is on learning and improving your skills.

Focus on your input. There, you have control.

The outcome is uncertain.

The most influential institution in modern investing isn't Harvard Business School

It's a think tank 3 hours from Roswell

Where Bill Miller (Managed $70B), Nick Sleep (20.8% CAGR) and Michael Mauboussin learned complex systems science.

7 lessons from the Santa Fe Institute: 🧵 Image

The Santa Fe Institute isn't your typical academic institution.

Founded in 1984 by Nobel physicist Murray Gell-Mann, it studies "complex systems" - how markets, cities, and networks really work.

It's also exactly 3 hours from Roswell. Make of that what you will. Image
Bill Miller put his money where his mind was.

In 2021, he wrote a $50 million check to SFI - the largest donation in its history.

His take: "You don't come here to get an answer... You come here to understand things differently."

But what did they discover? Image

This man achieved 921% returns while the market made 117%.

He retired at 45 after making investors $2 billion.

Yet you've probably never heard of him because he refused every interview and turned away new money.

Here's Nick Sleep's secret to finding 100-baggers:🧵 Image
Image
This is Nick Sleep.

His Nomad Investment Partnership ran from 2001 to 2014, delivering 20.8% annual returns versus 6.5% for the world index.

What made this performance remarkable wasn't just the numbers, it was how he achieved them... Image
Sleep operated completely differently from typical fund managers.

While most investors held stocks for months or quarters, he held for decades.

While others spread money across 50+ positions, he concentrated 60% of his fund into just 3 companies... Image

Every investing book says chase high ROIC companies.

But Medpace only had a 3.9% ROIC in 2016 and everyone avoided it.

8 years later? It became a 10-bagger ($35 → $340) while its ROIC quietly exploded upward.

Here's why the 'holy grail' of investing is actually a trap: 🧵 Image
Image
First, let's understand what ROIC actually measures.

Return on Invested Capital = NOPAT / Invested Capital

It tells you how efficiently a company uses its money to generate profits.

Sounds perfect, right? Here's the problem... Image
ROIC is completely backward-looking.

You're measuring ALL the capital invested since the company started.

So if a company earned $100M on $200M of total invested capital, that's 50% ROIC.

But what about tomorrow?

Grok has an unfair advantage for stock research.

It's the only AI trained on X data - where the best investors actually share insights.

I tested this on Wise PLC using 5 specific prompts.

The results changed how I analyze companies:🧵 Image
I've been trying to speed up my research process.

Most AI models like ChatGPT or Claude work fine for general analysis.

But Grok is different - it's trained on every tweet from investors who actually move markets. Image
Here's what makes Grok special for investing:

It learned from 200,000 GPUs running in parallel (ChatGPT used 80,000).

More importantly, it absorbed insights from every successful investor on X.

No other AI has access to this data. Image
