God’s Word – Medicine for Our Soul
A Strong Cleanser – The Word of God, when taken as daily nutrition, has a powerful way of cleansing us from impurity. Like any disinfecting agent, it can feel uncomfortable as the cleansing occurs, but the end result is more than worth the journey. On a steady diet through this
journey, we learn about the character and nature of God through many examples of the lives of people in His Word and His interaction with them. This shows us how to be more like Him (pure) everyday.
A Sealant – A consistent diet and hunger for the Word, combined with dependence
on the help of the Holy Spirit, helps us to be sealed from impurity. Like a Teflon coating, the Spirit reminds us of what we have eaten of the Word so that when impurity comes along, it can not stick to or penetrate us like it did before. We are sealed and the great thing is that
the Spirit uses the Word to speak to us in real-time, as life situations happen.
We get constant reminders of what God says we should do to be like Him AND we get reminded that we have been cleansed and sealed WHEN we stumble into or are accused of filthiness. It’s better than
any diet in the history of the universe and it’s not possible to over-indulge.
“12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and
desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.” - Hebrews 4:12-13

Yesterday we looked at Jacob’s all-night wrestling match with God in Genesis 32:22-32. We saw how he refused to give up and surrender control to the LORD. When the morning came and the LORD told him to “let Him go”, Jacob realized that it was the LORD with whom he had been
wrestling for control and he said “I will not let You go.” There were also other points in this encounter for us to learn from. 1) Jacob was in that place and going through those struggles (with his brother, those around him and the LORD) because of his own poor choices.
As a result of our fallen sinful nature, one of the biggest things that we all struggle with (if we are honest with ourselves) is being in control. We wan to make everything in the world center around us and we struggle throughout life to manipulate our circumstances to conform
to what we think they should be. We can’t help it but do this because it is who we are (it’s in our name).
In today’s message we see a famous example of this struggle being played out as a living example for all of us today so that we may learn from it. This is the story from
Two days ago as I slept through the night on Saturday and as He awoke me early Sunday morning, the Lord gently whispered to me a reminder that He had watched over me all night and that He had given me the breath of Life in my lungs. So I vowed to use that breath to give praise,
glory and honor to Him because of Who He is.
Yesterday (Monday) as I was relaxing and listening to worship music, a familiar song came up on my play list that got my attention. It was a song about the breath that I breathe and once again the Lord got my attention with words

Understanding the Power that Dwells Within Us
In the past few devotionals we have been discussing the power that God has given to us in the form of the Holy Spirit. We talked about how we just celebrated the out pouring of that power on Pentecost Sunday. This power has been given by God to each one of us who truly believe
that Jesus is our Lord and Savior. But if we believe these things, then we also understand that as Immanuel, He is always with us.
As our awareness and understanding of His presence grow, we communicate with and listen closely to Him more frequently. As we do this, we will find
God made each of us in His image. A beautiful masterpiece, He gave us all emotions, all desires and the ability to choose which to pursue (knowing in advance that this could/would bring chaos). So He sealed the deal by giving us His Holy Spirit to bring order to chaos, unity to
strife and division (the solution).
Yet there still remains strife, bickering and competition even among people who call on His Name (in His Church!). Arm wrestling so-to-speak, elevating oneself (spirituality) at the expense of belittling others (look around). These things
17 But you, my dear friends, must remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ predicted. 18 They told you that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires. 19 These people are the ones who are creating divisions
among you. They follow their natural instincts because they do not have God’s Spirit in them.
20 But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, 21 and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you
