Something a little different today. Joining the @ifrauk & @odeuropa for a day looking at #olfactoryheritage and why our intangible olfactory heritage matters. Also context of ratification of the convention on intangible cultural heritage. Great to share a table with @chattyplatty
A call for better storytelling about the history of smell & why olfactory heritage matters. We will be looking at the value of UK ‘smellscapes’ & importance of aroma in museums & heritage venues. We will be looking at perfume heritage in the U.K. #olfactoryheritage
First session this morning - #olfactoryheritage & why it matters with @UniOfYork & @ucl - you can access one of Will’s books here library.oapen.org/bitstream/hand…
A fascinating Europe-wide project looking at reconstructing smells from pomander to ‘hell’ odeuropa.eu/the-olfactory-…
Fascinating project around reconstructing & capturing the smell of the now lost Whitechapel Bell foundry. A new network wants to influence the policy landscape in this area. forms.office.com/e/cfBAnUrL5B?o…
Also developing a set of national guidance - with forthcoming workshops.
There is public anxiousness around the loss of certain smells. People in Glasgow didn’t want to lose the smell of the Glasgow metro when it was upgraded.
A project around smellscapes. Associations around place with industrial smells, ‘stink’ of certain activities. Complexity of moving through landscapes. Memory and mapping. Looking at places such as Chatham & Widnes. Idea of an atlas of smells.
Next up - a look at olfactory stories that gardens and landscapes open up. Often we can focus on the visual design of landscapes. But gardens and botanical gardens have a real role in opening up narratives about the history of certain olfactory associations.
An invitation to engage in this way can really further inclusivity & engagement in spaces,
We are reminded that early cabinets of curiosities would have had sensory element incl tactile & smell. Projects at @ChatsworthHouse on recreating dinner smells & @2TPEvents scents Thameside. Medieval Women at @britishlibrary - medieval hair perfume & breath freshener recreated
Scents of heaven and hell as reported by saints such as Julian of Norwich based on her descriptions of hell.
Importance & opportunity of citizen science in mapping changing smellscapes in places.
Fascinating project around capturing the lost scents on the Titanic. A satchel of Adolphe Saalfeld's Fragrance scents was lost & landed in debris section that RMS titanic salvaged intact. More here:
We are having the opportunity to smell now! vimeo.com/1026836927
This afternoon is kicking off with a panel on U.K. perfume heritage with @FlorisLondon @YardleyLondonUK & Angela Flanders. We are currently smelling a scent associated with Winston Churchill, Floris 127. Yardley goes back to the 1600s. Charles I reign. Official business 1770.
Angela Flanders made a fragrance for the @DennisSeversHse to capture the atmosphere & it is now used year round at the property. We are also talking about the role of nostalgia & memory in people’s choices. Drawing on the past but introducing the new.
Question - what does heritage smell like? Memory, place, experience, time. Can be tangible & intangible. We are smelling an original Yardley lavender. Alongside a new lavender edition with more of a mix.
Role of fragrance in transporting us to other places. Role of nostalgia in wellbeing. Ability of a historical scent to conjure up a positive response in us.
Question - should we have a museum of fragrance? People can go into the archives at the historic perfumers. People will also sometimes send old memorabilia to the companies. Role for perfume archivists?
Interesting potential here I think around research & social prescribing using archive scents. There’s work re: conjuring scents to support dementia sufferers to remember to eat using candles etc… but potentially something here also using older scents that have been discontinued.
An enjoyable final session imagining smell heritage’s future & some of the challenges & opportunities. And a snapshot of future topics people would appreciate discussing in this area of #olfactoryheritage

Day 2 @ACEVO - today we are online. Some opening reflections from Rebecca Wilkinson summing up yesterday. Resilience isn’t always ploughing on - it’s taking time to think. Supporting those we serve & also looking after ourselves.
None of us want to be ‘seagull leaders’. Make quick decisions, delegate, take time out. Bad governance isn’t caused by spreadsheets. It’s caused by human relationships. The importance of collective courage in challenging times.
The first session today we are hearing Jane Ide in conversation with @SarabajayaKumar - on redefining legitimacy. Who decides? Accountability without power isn’t real accountability. We need to think about power balances. We need to think about accountability to beneficiaries.
Joining the @ACEVO Leadership conference this morning. CEO Jane kicks off alongside sponsors. We are encouraged to not only listen to what leaders say but also reflect on what they mean. There is a warmth & collaboration in our charity sector that is unparalleled elsewhere.
Session one - focused on collective courage beyond crisis mode. We talk about authenticity & connection but everyday it is hard to achieve this. Need space like today. Acutely aware of the societal challenges in the UK at present - especially for inclusion of all communities.
How do we work together to combat the torrent of nonsense that keeps getting thrown at us? Says @MsIbegbuna - we are asked to demonstrate courage as leaders. When are those moments that we can dig a bit deeper?
Good morning from Stoke & the Cultural Development Fund Network looking at project legacy. A welcome from local Clr Jane Ashworth talking about the important role of culture in grounding us, inclusion, trust & countering troubling narratives. Culture should be a right for all.
Some reflections from David Johnson of @ace_national: 1. CDF has demonstrated value of partnership & convening; 2. Rooted in local identity & place 3. Sustainability is key - delivery is the beginning.
Here to represent the @Heritage_NGOs at today’s #GreatExpectations conference at the @V_and_A with @Ecclesiastical @TheCCT @NatChurchTrust @KingsFdn - I’ll be tweeting along here.
We are welcomed by @OliverJWCox talking about the @V_and_A history with being part of conversations about conservation & preservation. Inspiration from discussion at @Historic_Houses AGM around the role of the V&A 1970s exhibition on the Destruction of the English Country House.
Richard Taylor talks about the 50th anniversary of ‘Change and Decay’ here at @V_and_A & the urgency of discussions about the future of churches. Hugh Dennis talks about his own church journey. Churches of all ages & types are an important part of regional identity and community.
A treat to join our @Heritage_NGOs member @PSSAtweets for @MarshAwards for public sculpture. David Aaronovitch talks to begin about past art, past politics. There are some important perhaps unobserved mosaics in public buildings. 1928-33 mosaics added to floor of NG. V&A too.
We need to remember to look down at floors! Boris Anrep included many muses in mosaic art. Some private art of past is now public art. Public art piques interest - allows us to pull threads & see where they go. Defiance for eg is shape of a swastika & wears a papal crown. Why?
Shortlist for @MarshAwards for excellence in public sculpture
A pleasure to join @kidsinmuseums for their (always uplifting) annual family friendly museum awards.
