Something a little different today. Joining the @ifrauk & @odeuropa for a day looking at #olfactoryheritage and why our intangible olfactory heritage matters. Also context of ratification of the convention on intangible cultural heritage. Great to share a table with @chattyplatty Image

A call for better storytelling about the history of smell & why olfactory heritage matters. We will be looking at the value of UK ‘smellscapes’ & importance of aroma in museums & heritage venues. We will be looking at perfume heritage in the U.K. #olfactoryheritage Image

First session this morning - #olfactoryheritage & why it matters with @UniOfYork & @ucl - you can access one of Will’s books here library.oapen.org/bitstream/hand…Image

Fascinating project around reconstructing & capturing the smell of the now lost Whitechapel Bell foundry. A new network wants to influence the policy landscape in this area. forms.office.com/e/cfBAnUrL5B?o…Image

Also developing a set of national guidance - with forthcoming workshops. Image

There is public anxiousness around the loss of certain smells. People in Glasgow didn’t want to lose the smell of the Glasgow metro when it was upgraded.
A project around smellscapes. Associations around place with industrial smells, ‘stink’ of certain activities. Complexity of moving through landscapes. Memory and mapping. Looking at places such as Chatham & Widnes. Idea of an atlas of smells. Image

Next up - a look at olfactory stories that gardens and landscapes open up. Often we can focus on the visual design of landscapes. But gardens and botanical gardens have a real role in opening up narratives about the history of certain olfactory associations. Image

An invitation to engage in this way can really further inclusivity & engagement in spaces, Image

We are reminded that early cabinets of curiosities would have had sensory element incl tactile & smell. Projects at @ChatsworthHouse on recreating dinner smells & @2TPEvents scents Thameside. Medieval Women at @britishlibrary - medieval hair perfume & breath freshener recreated Image

Scents of heaven and hell as reported by saints such as Julian of Norwich based on her descriptions of hell. Image
Importance & opportunity of citizen science in mapping changing smellscapes in places.
Fascinating project around capturing the lost scents on the Titanic. A satchel of Adolphe Saalfeld's Fragrance scents was lost & landed in debris section that RMS titanic salvaged intact. More here:
We are having the opportunity to smell now! vimeo.com/1026836927Image
This afternoon is kicking off with a panel on U.K. perfume heritage with @FlorisLondon @YardleyLondonUK & Angela Flanders. We are currently smelling a scent associated with Winston Churchill, Floris 127. Yardley goes back to the 1600s. Charles I reign. Official business 1770. Image
Angela Flanders made a fragrance for the @DennisSeversHse to capture the atmosphere & it is now used year round at the property. We are also talking about the role of nostalgia & memory in people’s choices. Drawing on the past but introducing the new. Image
Question - what does heritage smell like? Memory, place, experience, time. Can be tangible & intangible. We are smelling an original Yardley lavender. Alongside a new lavender edition with more of a mix. Image
Role of fragrance in transporting us to other places. Role of nostalgia in wellbeing. Ability of a historical scent to conjure up a positive response in us.
Question - should we have a museum of fragrance? People can go into the archives at the historic perfumers. People will also sometimes send old memorabilia to the companies. Role for perfume archivists?
Interesting potential here I think around research & social prescribing using archive scents. There’s work re: conjuring scents to support dementia sufferers to remember to eat using candles etc… but potentially something here also using older scents that have been discontinued.
An enjoyable final session imagining smell heritage’s future & some of the challenges & opportunities. And a snapshot of future topics people would appreciate discussing in this area of #olfactoryheritage Image
