“A living hell”

X-Men star talks about growing up gay inside the abusive Opus Dei cult

🧵 A THREAD

smh.com.au/lifestyle/life…
Tim Pocock attended an Opus Dei school in Australia, where he was subjected to “constant monitoring” and “manipulation”

It “left me completely unprepared for the real world, unable to be myself and, most importantly, ashamed of who I was”

The school was supposedly set up by a small group of parents who called themselves “Parents for Education” in 1982

Their mission, as the story goes, was to open a new school “focused on education of the whole person”

pared.edu.au/the-pared-foun…
But, as with so many things when it comes to Opus Dei, in reality things were not quite what they seemed

In researching my book, I discovered the school – and many like it across the world – were funded by a bank in Spain secretly controlled by the cult

Redfield says that its chaplains are Opus Dei – but that “in all other aspects, the schools are ... their own administrations”

But Pocock says this is a lie: “I can tell you categorically that Opus Dei’s influence was all-encompassing”

redfield.nsw.edu.au
At many Opus Dei schools, the playbook is the same: children are identified as potential members and groomed

At Redfield, one kid discovered a book with a list of names, noting each boy’s weaknesses and the strengths they might offer to Opus Dei

At another Opus Dei school, girls were told they didn’t need to take a cancer-preventing vaccine because they would only ever have one sexual partner – their husbands

That “advice” ignored the fact that they might contract the virus from him

abc.net.au/religion/conse…
Teachers passed a piece of sticky tape around the room to demonstrate how having multiple sexual partners made a person dirty and “unusable”

Chastity was drummed into the girls, who were made to watch videos and were taught that masturbation was an “objective disorder” – just like homosexuality

abc.net.au/news/2023-02-1…
The State Premier, who was brought up in an Opus Dei family and who attended the school, was forced to launch the investigation into grooming claims

The education authority, which reported to him, later dropped the investigation

northweststar.com.au/story/8066101/…
The Opus Dei priests were also involved in the grooming, Pocock claims

At confession, “he would spend the time trying to glean information so that he could identify us”

smh.com.au/lifestyle/life…
Pocock says certain parts of the textbooks were “removed or blacked out”

The school would not only refuse to teach the content, but also didn’t want us to be reading it in our free time

He writes about it in his book

Dozens of former Opus Dei members have accused the group of recruiting children in recent years, challenging the organisation’s claims that it does not target minors

The Financial Times' @antoniacundy reported on it last year

The Vatican is currently finalising a huge reform of this abusive cult

In the past few days, the group submitted its plans for change to the Holy See

It looks to be the first big test for Pope Leo

I write about this – and more – in my book OPUS

“A well-told, gripping story” – WASHINGTON POST

“Vividly told and excellently researched” – FINANCIAL TIMES

“A genuine exposé, a fluid, authoritative account” – TLS

Opus Dei has *just* confirmed that it has submitted the final draft of its revised statutes to the Vatican for approval

After three years of delays and foot-dragging, reform of this abusive cult now looks *imminent*

🧵A THREAD

opusdei.org/en-us/article/…
This looks set to be the first big test of Pope Leo – will he come down hard on Opus Dei, or will the reforms fall short?

Clearly, this is a priority for him: Leo used one of his first audiences to summon Opus Dei’s leadership for an update on reforms

ncronline.org/opinion/pope-l…
Victims have been told that they “won’t be disappointed” – but, as always, the proof will be in the pudding of the details

Former members believe that the group is incapable of reform – and are worried that abuse will continue

💣 BOMBSHELL NEWS 💣

Pope Leo gives Opus Dei SIX MONTHS to pass comprehensive reforms

Leader of group is told: if you don't clean up by December, “necessary measures will be taken”

🧵 A THREAD 🧵

cronista.com/espana/actuali…
The ultimatum was made in a letter sent directly by the pope to the head of Opus Dei

As well as the reforms, Leo has also demanded an investigation into abuse allegations

These include human trafficking, enslavement – as well as physical and psychological abuse of members Image
The letter shows that the new pope is serious about reforming this abusive cult at the heart of the Church

He summoned the leader of Opus Dei to the Vatican in one of his very first papal audiences, in an indication that this was a clear priority

With Donald Trump now turning against "sleazebag" Leonard Leo, the man who helped him stack the courts, it feels like a good moment to re-up this piece about Leo's deep connections to Opus Dei

A THREAD 🧵

rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
Interesting how Trump writes that Leo "probably hates America, and obviously has his own separate ambitions"

Would be interesting to hear what Trump thinks those "separate ambitions" might be

Maybe someone could even ask Leo - although he usually only speaks to friendly media Image
Trump says Leo "openly brags how he controls Judges, and even Justices of the United States Supreme Court"

That's quite the revelation, and something that the authorities ought to be looking into, perhaps

How is he using that power exactly?

Opus Dei members told to brace for “dramatic, traumatic, historic and revolutionary” changes as Pope Leo XIV tackles decades of abuse inside the organisation

A THREAD 🧵 Image
Vatican sources have reassured Opus Dei victims who have long campaigned for justice that they “won’t be disappointed” as huge reforms edge closer

eldiario.es/sociedad/alivi…
The latest comes after Opus Dei leaders were summoned to the Vatican last week – in one of Pope Leo’s very first audiences, showing the urgency he places on the issue

Pope Leo meets Opus Dei boss in a private audience to get an "update" on its reforms

You might recall Opus Dei cancelled a vote on its reforms hours after Francis passed away

Leo "listened with great interest to the explanations given" - I bet he did!

opusdei.org/es/article/aud…
Looks like Leo is keen to continue the good work started by Francis in reforming this abusive cult

Opus Dei's strategy of dragging its feet and waiting for Francis to die may well have backfired

Curious detail in the official announcement of the meeting from the Vatican

Opus Dei boss referred to as "moderator" rather than "prelate" - using the same, much diminished term preferred by Francis

Signals Leo is equally serious about reform Image

Photos have emerged of the new pope presiding over a special mass to commemorate the controversial founder of Opus Dei

What should we read into them? Is he a supporter? Is Pope Leo XIV perhaps not as progressive as we thought he was?

A THREAD 🧵

open.substack.com/pub/garethgore…Image
The mass took place back in 2019 in the Peruvian city of Chiclayo, where Robert Prevost was a bishop

The special mass was dedicated to Josemaría Escrivá, the controversial founder of Opus Dei

open.substack.com/pub/garethgore…Image
Escrivá was a man who:

- supported Franco
- said it was "impossible" the Nazis killed six million Jews
- used listening devices to spy on his followers
- decided women (but not men) had to sleep on wooden boards because their flesh is weaker
