I’ve been interviewing people on the street of NYC about the mayor’s race and here’s what I’ve observed: 1) Most people don’t want to talk to me or they’re not following the race. Keep in mind that only 26% of eligible voters voted in the last mayoral primary.
2) I have interviewed people in: Washington Square Park, Harlem, Crown Heights, and the UWS (not a perfect sample but trying to visit diff areas). Most eager voters who planned to vote told me they were voting for Zohran Mamdani
3) Among the Cuomo supporters, they told me they appreciated his daily briefings during Covid. Even with the nursing home scandal, people said they just appreciated having someone to turn to during a crisis.
4) I thought there would be more Cuomo supporters who were voting specifically in opposition to Mamdani at this point but the Cuomo supporters I spoke to didn’t seem to know much about Mamdani.
Man on the street interviews ≠ perfect data but they do provide an interesting perspective on people’s often vibe-based incentives for supporting candidates. Most Zohran supporters knew his general platform but some just said they wanted younger, newer leadership
Again, small sample of people. I’m not a pollster, but these are some patterns I’ve observed so far. Mamdani supporters seem very organized and have effectively spread their message: don’t rank Cuomo.
