So...we got not one but two new castings today for Sunrise On The Reaping.
First and foremost, Glenn Close has been cast as Drusilla Sickle, thus becoming the latest addition to the list of actors/actresses who are both 1). not Charlie Plummer and 2). have correctly been rumored to be cast in Sunrise On The Reaping.
I can't say I'm too surprised, considering that I had previously heard that Glenn Close was in discussions for a role in the film and that Drusilla was widely considered to be the most likely for such a role.
Besides, this is Glenn Close playing Cruella De Vil in what I must assume was a cash-grab live action remake of 101 Dalmatians.
Gotta say that Cruella gives off the same, "I'm manically evil for the sake of being manically evil" vibes that Drusilla gave throughout SOTR.
In other words, Glenn Close can absolutely nail this role.
In today's other casting news, Billy Porter has been cast as Magno Stift.
NGL, this one came as a bit of a surprise, since I actually thought Magno may have been on the chopping block in terms of actually getting included.
That said, this is the first image that came up when I Googled Billy Porter--and yes, it does give off Magno Stift vibes.
I do want to address a bit of an elephant in the room, since Billy Porter does kind of resemble Lenny Kravitz (the actor who played Cinna in the original series)--something that might lead one to conclude the films are going present Cinna as Magno and Drusilla's son.
On the surface, this is actually a plausible idea, since 1). Magno and Drusilla are canonically married and 2). having Cinna be their son would link Cinna to the rebellion.
Yes, but...
According to Plutarch, Drusilla and Magno had been married for 30 years, and only remained so for tax reasons (SOTR ch. 13).
In the Hunger Games, Katniss describes Cinna as a "young man" (THG ch. 5).
SOTR takes place 24 years before the original series, meaning that Cinna likely would have been a young child during SOTR.
As a result, I am going to say that it is possible, but not likely, that Cinna will be Magno and Drusilla's son.
I think next up, they are going to start casting the major non-District 12 tributes (Panache, Silka, Ampert, Ringina, etc._) These roles largely haven't been cast yet, but more or less cannot easily be repleaced.
FA Cup Final (which I completely forgot about until writing this post)
PGA Championship
Preakness Stakes
NBA/NHL Playoffs (including two Game 7s tomorrow)
MLB Rivalry Week
MLS Rivalry Week
I’m not going to complain about having more sports on, but I feel like some of the would do better if they took place at other times of the year.
For example, the PGA Championship should go back to August to take advantage of a less-crowded window (I realize the PGA Tour wanted the FedEx Cup over before NHL season, but I have been saying the golf major switch was stupid ever since it was made).
When Sunrise On The Reaping's plot summary first dropped, the following descriptions were given of three tributes who accompany Haymitch from District 12 to the games: "...a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town."
I want to talk about something I said at the time this plot summary dropped that I ended up getting right.
When we first meet Lenore Dove in Sunrise On The Reaping, she is singing a song called "The Goose And The Common."
In the book's acknowledgments, Suzanne states that the song is by an unknown author in the 17th or 18th century.
Now, I actually the history of this song, and it turns out that it is almost the perfect song for SOTR--both for Lenore Dove and her gaggle of geese and for some of the social themes expressed in the book.
Very early on in Sunrise On The Reaping, we receive an interesting tidbit about Clerk Carmine that i believe sheds a lot of light on the rule of Coriolanus Snow over Panem
While discussing the attitude of the Covey towards his and Lenore Dove’s romance, Haymitch states that Clerk Carmine has been in a 30-year relationship with a man in town who fixes windows.
You guys knew I just had to use that title, right? 🤣
(Also, I've probably used more colons than are typically used in a Twitter post.
I had planned to do a few other SOTR threads before analyzing Maysilee's arc.
That said, she was a character over which I spilled a lot of ink on this website, and my sense post-SOTR is that she has become a fan favorite (both rightly so).
SOTR ANAYLSIS THREAD #1: EARLY THOUGHTS (SPOILERS AHEAD)
If you read the initial reaction Twitter thread a few days ago, you know that I absolutely loved this book--to the point where it is now my favorite of the series.
What this book did really well was take a story whose outcome we already knew--both because Haymitch is alive in the trilogy and because Katniss and Peeta watch a tape of these exact Games (CF ch. 14)--and turn into engaging read where we wanted to find out what happened next.
