SOTR ANALYSIS THREAD #17: KATNISS, GALE, HAYMITCH, MAYSILEE (+) One of the first things we learn about Katniss Everdeen in the very first chapter of the very first Hunger Games book is her relationship with her friend Gale Hawthorne--in Katniss's words, "the only person with whom I can be myself" (THG ch. 1) (+)

So...we got not one but two new castings today for Sunrise On The Reaping. First and foremost, Glenn Close has been cast as Drusilla Sickle, thus becoming the latest addition to the list of actors/actresses who are both 1). not Charlie Plummer and 2). have correctly been rumored to be cast in Sunrise On The Reaping.

Sports on offer this weekend:

FA Cup Final (which I completely forgot about until writing this post)

PGA Championship

Preakness Stakes

NBA/NHL Playoffs (including two Game 7s tomorrow)

MLB Rivalry Week

MLS Rivalry Week I’m not going to complain about having more sports on, but I feel like some of the would do better if they took place at other times of the year.

SOTR ANALYSIS THREAD #8: NIGHT, SIS When Sunrise On The Reaping's plot summary first dropped, the following descriptions were given of three tributes who accompany Haymitch from District 12 to the games: "...a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town."

SOTR ANAYLSIS THREAD #7: THE GOOSE AND THE COMMON When we first meet Lenore Dove in Sunrise On The Reaping, she is singing a song called "The Goose And The Common."

In the book's acknowledgments, Suzanne states that the song is by an unknown author in the 17th or 18th century.

SOTR ANALYSIS THREAD #6: LBGTQ REPRESSION Very early on in Sunrise On The Reaping, we receive an interesting tidbit about Clerk Carmine that i believe sheds a lot of light on the rule of Coriolanus Snow over Panem

REBEL MAYSILEE DONNER PART 10: CONFIRMED CANON You guys knew I just had to use that title, right? 🤣

(Also, I've probably used more colons than are typically used in a Twitter post.

SOTR ANAYLSIS THREAD #1: EARLY THOUGHTS (SPOILERS AHEAD) If you read the initial reaction Twitter thread a few days ago, you know that I absolutely loved this book--to the point where it is now my favorite of the series.

NEW SOTR EXCERPT!!!!!

This time, involving Suzanne Collins herself reading a scene between Haymitch and Lenore Dove.

Breakdown time: 1. I know Suzanne typically reads the District 12 characters with a southern accent (there are videos of her doing such for both Katniss, below. and Lucy Gray), but why does she seem more southern in introducing the clip than actually reading it?

REBEL MAYSILEE DONNER PART 9: PROPAGANDA Well, folks, we are now almost a week away from the release of Sunrise On The Reaping.

I bet many of you were wondering if I would try to squeeze one last thread reminding you all that Maysilee Donner will be a rebel.

She is. I will.

The below image of a butterfly and ladybug was posted earlier today on some official social media accounts associated with the Hunger Games books.

It's clearly SOTR-related, your guess is as good as mine as to what it means, but let's take a stab at it. First of all, we need to understand what these two symbols mean.

SUNRISE ON THE REAPING EXCERPT #2 BREAKDOWN Earlier today, the following excerpt from Sunrise On The Reaping came out as part of the reveal of SOTR's audiobook narrator. Let's break it down, shall we? (🧵)

CBS Mornings 1. The thing that immediate stands out to me about this new excerpt is the last line, which ends with the words, "resistance is not an option."

REBEL MAYSILEE DONNER PART 8: MAYSILEE'S LAST WISH (🧵) So...it's been a while since I did a Rebel Maysilee Donner post. I bet half of you guys were thinking I'd exhausted that theory (until I teased earlier tonight that I was doing more threads on the matter).

All right, everyone. Who’s down for a little THG/SOTR-related fun:

Let’s figure out which of the Covey is most likely related to Lenore Dove (🧵) In TBOSAS, there are six named individuals who have performed with the Covey at one point or another in the present or past: Lucy Gray, Maude Ivory, Barb Azure, Tam Amber, Clerk Carmine, and Billy Taupe (ch. 23).

SUNRISE ON THE REAPING EXCERPT BREAKDOWN:

We got the first excerpt from Sunrise On The Reaping earlier today. You guys all know that I’m about to Tweetstorm my reaction, don’t you?

Here goes:

people.com/new-hunger-gam… 1. “I’m hoping to finish my work before the ceremony so I can devote the afternoon to the two things I love best — wasting time and being with my girl, Lenore Dove.”

Re-reading Catching Fire to prep for SOTR. At the part where Katniss and Peeta watch the highlight reel of Haymitch’s Games.

Look at what i found. Why do I have a feeling that the below highlighted passage is going to be ENORMOUSLY important in SOTR? Image Two other excerpts from the highlight reel passage (CF ch. 14) that may have SOTR implications:

1. “I think of how I never realized that [Mrs. Undersee] and my mother shared this connection. Of Madge showing up in that snowstorm to bring the painkiller for Gale...

Just saw this SOTR book trailer. First look at the spine, which seems to have a sunrise on it (appropriately so—I’d also guess that is the symbol inside the ouroboros).

#sotr #readsunrise Also interesting that they used “And the world is watching.”

That seems to echo “The world will be watching,” which was a tagline for one of the posters for the first movie. Image

REBEL MAYSILEE DONNER PART 7: REMEMBER WHO THE ENEMY IS So, by now, most of you are probably aware that I have written 6 different Twitter threads that argue Maysilee will be rebel-aligned in SOTR.

I’ve written a lot on this Timeline about the “most stuck-up girl in town” mentioned in SOTR’s plot summary (and will most likely do AT LEAST one other long thread doing so), but here’s a short thread on one of the other tributes mentioned in said plot summary. According to the plot summary, the other District 12 girl is described as, “a young friend who is almost like a sister to [Haymitch].”

Kind of an interesting parallel that of District’s 12 four Hunger Games victors, three had a person with whom they identified in this way.

I have just watched @Scholastic’s 2025 Young Adult Introduction, in which publisher and editorial director David Levithan (@loversdiction) discusses titles that the company is releasing next year—including Sunrise On The Reaping.

Analysis incoming.

The most telling statement from Levithan is, “Everything you thought you knew about that Second Quarter Quell, well, you didn’t know any of it.”

REBEL MAYSILEE DONNER PART 5: SWEETS TO THE SWEETSHOP Going to cut right to the chase. In a set of replies on my last "Rebel Maysilee Donner," I wrote the following.

And I want to let to let you in on a little secret: I think I may have worked out the exact connection between Maysilee and the Covey.
