The difference between this and Kipchoges attempt is:
-The marathon had more to be optimized...pacing/drafting for 26.2 miles is a big difference. It was also a the beginning of the shoe revolution.
-It was a bigger chunk off of WR to barrier in the mile.
In this event, all the shoe tech was near optimized already. The clothing stuff is just marketining nonsense.
The biggest boost is that Kipyegon would have pacers/drafting for the whole distance instead of 800-900 meters.
So you get about 800 meters more of drafting/pacing...which would give you a few seconds.
I get that we have to hype these things up. But this one was a bit too far. You need women to get down to sub 4:05 to start thinking about it. Which they'll get there eventually.
Anyways, a great effort by Kipyegon. She's one of the greatest.
Way too much marketing cringe on the broadcast. WOuld have loved more actual insight, dissection, and historical perspective versus the cringe fluff....but it's a marketing thing so I get it.
The biggest factor for women is they need a bit more 800m speed.
We need a 1:52ish speed with sub 14 5k ability.
Kipyegon is more like 1:55/14ish
The 800m ability is the harder to get (and combined with endurance so not a 400/800 type.)
It'll come but we're not there yet.
