Well... I just found out today that the proposed FY26 president's budget will eliminate the NSF graduate research fellowship program that is funding my Ph.D.

With that, Heliophysics will also be receiving massive cuts and many missions will be canceled. These include missions that are currently flying in space as well as ground-based instruments. For example, ACE is proposed to be canceled which would lead to the loss of EPAM data and reliable speed/density solar wind measurements.

Just curious... how many of you have heard of these budget cuts? I have assumed the crisis facing NASA/NOAA/NSF is common knowledge, but someone told me that most people have no idea that this is happening.

I can provide more resources on advocacy soon if you want to voice your concern about the proposed budget.

You probably have a phone that can take aurora pictures. While they can capture more than your eyes can see, it's impossible to print anything larger than a 4x5 and have it look good... Image
A professional photography kit (camera+lens) doesn't have to break the bank, though! In general, you want to look for two things:

1. A camera model with a manual mode.
2. A wide-angle lens with a large aperture.

A very large coronal hole is now directly facing Earth. We may see a CIR/density compression followed by HSS (high speed stream) in the next 24-48 hours. These high-speed streams can trigger geomagnetic storms, usually of minor to moderate strength (Kp 5-6). Image

In fact, NOAA SWPC has issued a G2 moderate geomagnetic storm watch for tomorrow. The exact timing of the arrival of the high-speed stream is looser than a CME - conditions usually change over the course of hours instead of during a CME where this is a shock at a moment in time. Image
