If more sordid details emerge, and it is revealed that Donald Trump did in fact have sex with underage girls while on Epstein’s private island, I absolutely guarantee that Republicans will be fine with it.

Most Republicans know Trump was friends with Jeffrey Epstein. (It has been said that there are more pictures of Trump with Epstein than with his own son Barron.) They are also well aware of Trump’s devil-may-care attitudes about women & unfaithfulness to all three of his wives.
And they have doubtlessly heard about Trump’s inappropriate behavior around teenage girls, which very much includes his sexualized remarks about his own daughter Ivanka.
So while today’s Republicans may not yet be condoning the statuatory rape of a minor, they have already normalized everything Trump has done that leads right up to it.
Granted, they will never admit it happened for as long as possible. But if they are backed into a corner, they will make excuses for him, 10 times out of 10. That is because their job is to make excuses for Trump. Full stop. There is no more important purpose for the modern GOP.
There is zero doubt in my mind that if Trump had sex with an underage girl, MAGA would move Heaven & Earth to find examples of liberals who did the same thing. Or something close to it. Whatever it takes to conclude that Both Sides Do It, Therefore Nothing More Needs to Be Done.
The main reason MAGA was so keen on seeing the list was because they wanted to find prominent examples of exactly this. They weren’t going to get Joe Biden or Barack Obama, but Bill Clinton is a possible suspect and most Democrats above the age of 50 probably voted for him.
Again: the purpose of Whataboutism is for the guiltier party to escape punishment. It is not to mete out punishment equally to both parties.
MAGA doesn’t actually care about prosecuting Clinton. They just want to weaponize his misdeeds to shield Trump from consequences forever.

There is no ethical “line” that can ever be respected by Trump or his supporters, because there is always a chance that he will eventually cross it.
There is no endgame where Republicans en masse will negatively judge Trump for his actions. They will simply revise their principles to accommodate him.
It’s just like his secret meetings with the Kremlin.

Both sides know Trump is guilty, but Republicans don’t care because they want Trump to get rid of the migrants and show those liberals who’s boss.
I will acknowledge that much of what I have said here is conjecture based on a very consistent pattern of previous events. So I invite any Republicans who have read this far to prove me wrong.
Show me that there is such a thing as “a bridge too far.”
