Here are some facts about the deadly Texas flooding to help understand what happened.

1. The National Weather Service issued a series of early alerts warning of “life-threatening flooding” along the river HOURS BEFORE the flooding began. Read that again. #TexasFloods
2. Local officials were alerted to the threat by the NWS but there was no system in place (text alerts, and more importantly sirens, etc.) to alert people along the river.
3. The Guadelupe River floods frequently and regularly. It has flooded dozens of times since 1900.

4. Camp Mystic was built in the flood plain of a river that floods regularly.
5. The Guadalupe River is particularly prone to sudden and severe flooding due to its unique geography such as steep slopes and thin soil that doesn't absorb rain well. It is a very poor place to

locate homes, business, camp sites, and communities. 80% of Kerr County is a Special Flood Hazard Area.
6. In 2017, the TX Division of Emergency Management turned down a $1 million grant from the Obama Admin that Kerry County applied for in 2015 to put in place a flood 4/n
warning system along the Guadelupe River.
7. In 2016, Kerr County refused to spend $50,000 on an engineering study needed to instal early warning sirens along the river. Instead, they bought nearly $1 million in large trucks. One Republican county commissioner called the 5/n
early warning system "extravagant" and dismissed the idea of “sirens and all that stuff”.
8. In 2017, Texas officials decided a flood warning system on the Guadelupe was “too expensive.” Earlier this year, Texas lawmakers voted down a bill that would have improved disaster
warning systems.
9. The one single community that had a siren alert system had zero casualites. 7/n
10. On July 31, 2025, the Trump Adminstration is going to turn off three satellites that help the NWS to predict flash floods such as those that occured in Texas.
11. Since January 20, 2025, the Trump administation has fired over 600 NWS employees and over 100 NWS meteorologists. The NOAA budget has been cut by 27% and the weather prediction portion of the NOAA has seen a 74% cut.
12. Chances that the Guadelupe River will flood again with in the next 10 years? 100%

There are no such thing has "natural disasters" only human created vulnerabilities. #kerrcounty
