Modern chickens grow 500-800% faster than they did in 1925.

What used to take 4 months now takes 6 weeks. Even "organic" chicken reaches the market in 8 weeks.

So what's making them explode in size? 🧵 Image
In 1925, it took 112 days (16 weeks) to raise a 2.5-pound chicken.

By 1950: 12 weeks for 3 pounds.

Today: 47 days for 6.5 pounds. Image
University of Alberta researchers raised chicken breeds from 1957, 1978, and 2005 side-by-side with identical feed.

The 2005 bird grew 4x larger than the 1957 bird at the same age.

Same feed, but wildly different results. Image
Every chicken package proudly says "No Hormones Added."

That's technically true. Hormones in poultry have been illegal since the 1950s.

But this label is misleading.

It's not hormones making chickens grow like this... Image
The real drivers:

Selective breeding for explosive growth and highly optimized feed formulas.

Modern broilers need only 1.8 lbs of feed to gain 1 lb of body weight.

In the 1940s, they needed twice as much feed for the same weight gain. Image
Contract farming plays a role here.

Farmers who raise chickens for big companies (Tyson, Perdue, etc.) must sign contracts that strip away their control.

The company owns the chickens and provides all the feed. Image
Contract farmers are legally required to use only the company's feed.

They can't substitute it, can't test it, can't even know what's really in it.

The feed formulas are proprietary.
Think about this:

The farmer raising your food isn't allowed to know what's in the feed. These aren't just basic grains, but formulas engineered for maximum growth.

Companies guard these recipes like Coca-Cola guards its formula.
Additionally, farmers often shoulder the financial and reputational hit when a flock gets sick or drug residues show up, even though the feed formula is proprietary and outside their control.

In other words, they’re penalized for problems they can’t fully trace.
Even organic farmers rarely see the full ingredient list of their “organic” feed.

They get labels, but the exact mix of additives, supplements & growth-promoters? USDA’s 2024 transparency rule reveals feed quality specs, yet the precise formula stays secret. Image
Image
We're messing with a complex biological system we barely understand.

Chickens that grow 5x faster than nature intended, eating mystery feed formulas designed by food scientists. What could go wrong?
The human body evolved eating animals that grew naturally over months or years. Now we're eating birds that pack on unnatural amounts of weight in weeks.

We're essentially beta testing this on ourselves.
When you eat chicken, you're consuming whatever made that bird grow explosively fast.

The industry says "trust us, it's just good breeding and feed."

But you can't even find out what's in that feed!!
The "no hormones" label is accurate but incomplete. The real story is advanced breeding and nutrition science.

More transparency about these methods would benefit consumers!

We deserve to know how our food (and our food's food) is made.

Nattokinase is the #1 supplement for cardiovascular health.

It reduces plaque, dissolves clots, and lowers blood pressure. In trials, it reduced arterial plaque 36.6% (vs 11.5% for statins).

Here's everything you should know: 🧵 Image
In 1987, Dr. Hiroyuki Sumi at University of Chicago had a mission to find nature's most powerful clot-buster.

He tested 173 different foods on artificial blood clots.

One food dissolved clots in just 18 hours, faster than anything else he tried.

That food? Natto. Image
Natto is made of fermented soybeans that smell like old socks (and taste worse).

But during fermentation, Bacillus subtilis bacteria produce nattokinase, an enzyme that literally eats blood clots.

It's one of the most powerful cardiovascular interventions: and it's natural! Image

40+ million Americans take statins for heart health, yet heart disease remains our leading cause of death.

If statins are the solution, why is this?

The truth is more complex than it seems.

Here’s what we need to understand about statins: 🧵 Image
2/ The statin story starts with a controversial scientific study in the 1960s.

John Yudkin (blaming sugar) vs. Ancel Keys (blaming fat/cholesterol).

Keys won with his "Seven Countries Study", which EXCLUDED countries that didn't fit his hypothesis.

What did the study say?
3/ "Seven Countries Study" linked fat intake to heart disease, but it only showed correlation, not causation.

Keys attacked Yudkin’s sugar hypothesis as “a mountain of nonsense."

Sugar industry groups derided Yudkin’s work as “science fiction."

Singapore spends 4% of GDP on healthcare; the US burns 18%.

Yet Singaporeans enjoy some of the world’s lowest chronic-disease rates.

Prevention is baked into their daily life: from school meals to city design.

The urban-health model we should all study: 🧵 Image
Image
2/ It starts young.

Singapore has mandatory fitness testing from primary school.

School meals follow strict nutrition rules.

Until 2007, kids over a 110% BMI had to join TAF Club (Trim and Fit), but it was replaced with a holistic program to prevent stigma. Image
3/ SGP builds health into their environment.

80% of residents are within a 10-minute walk of parks or green spaces.

Urban planning prioritizes walkability, with connected park networks and cycling paths.

Their cities are designed to make daily movement natural, not forced

Between 1950 and 2007, melanoma rates skyrocketed. Ironically, during the same period, sunscreen use went through the roof.

Could the very thing meant to protect us be contributing to the problem?

Let’s explore the connection: 🧵 Image
Image
2/ Between 1950 and 2007, there was a great increase in melanoma cases:

• More than 17-fold increase for men
• More than 9-fold increase for women

Before 1950 (and the adoption of modern sunscreen), these rates were significantly lower.

Here's why: Image
3/ Most sunscreens contain oxybenzone, a hormone-disrupting chemical.

While Europe recommends against it, the FDA remains silent.

Unfortunately, oxybenzone doesn't just stay on your skin... Image

American farms pump 6.1 million kg of antibiotics into HEALTHY animals each year, DOUBLE what Europe allows.

This is the meat Americans eat every day.

Here is what this means for your health: 🧵 Image
2/ The 80% of all antibiotics in the US are fed to healthy animals.

Why? To maximize profits.

Due to this, every 15 minutes someone in America dies from a drug-resistant infection (according to CDC).

The antibiotics meant to save us might no longer work. Image
3/ Antibiotics fed to healthy animals create resistant bacteria (superbugs).

These spread to humans through meat, water, air & contact.

When we get infected, the drugs don’t work. What started on a farm ends in a hospital bed, with no cure.

That’s how meat can kill. Image

In 1962, kids got only 7 vaccine doses in childhood.

Today, American children get 73... while Switzerland, Japan & Austria administer HALF as many.

Are other developed nations "anti-science" or is Big Pharma to blame?

A nuanced look at vaccine policy: 🧵 Image
The vaccine conversation today is so polarized.

Every conversation goes one of two ways:

1. Vaccines are completely safe with no risks

2. Vaccines are pure evil, they are solely responsible for autism, obesity, inflation, and every Bad Thing of the past decade.
This conversation is dumb.

If I skip one vaccine for my kid, does that make me an anti-vaxxer?

What if I prefer 2017's 54-dose schedule over the CDC's newest 73-dose one?

Or what if I think the Swiss schedule (with fewer shots, spaced out) is better?

Am I anti-vax?
