True story - one that introduced me to one of the nuances of corporate politics!

Post-NYSC, I interned with this edutech & was in a science team of 3 interns, all first class grads.

We all studied "unrelated" first° disciplines & like with all internships, it was probationary.
My close friend on the team counted his teeth with his tongue, accepted another offer & moved to Mobil.

I did my work, exceptionally well - displayed talent & corporate range but guess what:

At the end of the internship, HR informed me that they'd not be extending my contract.
I later found out that they were retaining the last guy

For weeks, I pondered. "Why X?"

We had equal academic standings - so, why him not me?

X was an undeniably brilliant guy.

He wasn't academically smarter than me but he had an edge, I didn't know existed at that time.
Then, it clicked! X was more likeable.

Don't get me misquote me.

X WAS NOT an asslicker, He was likeable.

He had the knack for opening & engaging conversations.

During breaks, he'd be in the open kitchen engaging conversation with folks, he'd expand discourses with the CEO.
from global politics, to local economy, to science, produc lessons while they engaged their KFC buckets.

He had a personal relationship with everyone!

Me on the other end, I only spoke when spoken to.

I'd come in the morning, plug my ears, do my work, eat my food and leave.
It is possible that for some roles you've interviewed for;

roles that you exceptionally nailed the interviews with accolades and they get back to you saying they found someone "who is a better fit".

They mostly found someone who was more likeable.

It was never a skill issue.
I latched onto that corporate lesson - If someone like you, they'll hire you.

If they like you, they will train you.

When it clicked, I laid my hands on every piece D Carnegie had ever written.

Likeability is a skill that can be learnt & belted.

Likeability is not asslicking. Image

Likeability shouldn't be mistaken for "yes'man-ism" as it is a weapon that can be acquired, to be deployed at will.

Emma stood his ground many times in arguments, discourses and he was still likeable.

In the past few years, I've been privilege to work with some CEOs and -
moderate some close circle highend Industry leader fireside chats & if there's one thing I have consistently picked from convos -

most of these guys would optimise hire for "culture fit" in the face of exceptional talents.

"Team fit" is the apolitical word for "likeability".
I understand dissenting maxims like "It is not my job to be likeable - It is my job to be myself & the right people will gravitate"

While I don't disagree with you, this very valid nuance of job interviews & office politics exists.

If they like you, they will hire & train you.

When you hear people say "Nigeria doesn't work" - shut them up.

Nigeria works.

If you design a system to fail, if it fails - it actually works.

From education, to infrastructure, to health, to commerce - everything works.

The question is - who is it working for?
Corporations put an employment ceiling of 23 years for entry jobs.

The education system is designed to get you into, keep you in school for 8 yrs & spill you out at 27. After NYSC, you're beyond the cut off.

It is easily to disqualify you to put their children.

Nigeria works.
I was born in Lagos, bred in sango ota - lived most of my teenage years in Ota.

All the dilapidated roads have been in rot years before my family moved to Ogun State - today, those roads are still the same.

You think it is hard to fix road? Ask Alex Otti.

Nigeria works.

When I started my 20's decade, I knew that I needed money lessons if I wanted to feature in a particular life in my 30's.

I've also learnt that you play the game different when you eclipse into another decade.

As I venture into my 30's decade, this is my possible play.

🧵
I need to decide what my number is.

What number in $$$ do I need to be in liquidity or investments to consider myself financially secured.

Decide that number and work backwards.

That number is my FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) number.
Misery loves company.

Broke is contagious. So is wealth

I need to talk about money more with my boys.

Levelling up together is important.

If you don't have boys with whom you have these conversations, you're better off rolling alone.

Don't let your company dilute your mind.

I have some time so let me teach a concept I taught in my 6 years of teaching college biology.

Mosquitoes fit perfectly into the food chain and the absence of mosquitoes means many plants and animals will cease to exist.

I'll tell you how & why:
Alongside bees and butterflies, mosquitoes are one of the most influential pollinators because their males feed on nectar

They transfer pollen grains from flower to flower, enabling reproduction

Putting mosquitoes at risk, means plants would be at risk - by extension, herbivores
Which also means that carnivores/omnivores could suffer.

That's not all.

The eggs that mosquitoes lay on water bodies metamorphosizes into larvae and become the primary food source for fishes.

That mosquitoes cease to exist means that the fish population could be impacted.

I don't think you people understand it. Tinubu ruined Lagos.

Ask anyone who lived in Lagos in 90's and early 2000's.

Slums exist everywhere but the weaponisation of slums is the lifeline of Tinubu's wealth.

When he came back from exile, that was his priority.
He doesn't have any business anywhere. No history of commerce.

Brought back his drug proceeds and glazed into governance, like they all do.

When he became Governor, he claimed to have attracted a "foreign investment" and a new influx of yellow buses flooded Lagos.
Not manned by professionals - he didn't need "educated" minds to manage that system, he needed condemned nuisances, that he can "help".

Together, they formed a comprehensive network of park leaders, union leaders, chapter chairmen - all strata of local thugs getting daily money.

What was supposed to be the start of a beautiful birthday trip for me started heartbreakingly.

When I got my Japan visa, I asked the visa officer if stops at Hong Kong would need a transit visa, he assured me "No"

On Hong Kong's immigration page, 170 countries -
170 countries can transit visa-free, as long as transit time is under 24hours and they don't go through border control again - Nigeria isn't one of those countries.

For context - Djibouti, Mali, Guinea, Chad, Gabon, Niger, Algeria are part of these countries that qualify.
Now, I booked my tickets with Hong Kong as a transit stop - not because Nigeria qualifies but because I have residency in countries that are transit visa free.

This and other valid visa stamps from other bilateral countries with Hong Kong made my V.O give me that assurance.

As someone who practices intermittent fasting by spacing all his meals by 12 hours, have spent a better part of the last 4 years in cancer research, currently runs two PhDs in cancer biology & loathes half information.

This is tweet is relatively correct and these are the facts. Image
Two different phenomena that's constantly transposed.

Intermittent fasting isn't the same as caloric restriction.

The mechanistic effect of IF which is primarily metabolic is channelled towards weight loss. It is about when you eat.

CR is about how much you eat.
I'm not saying there are no cancer-related benefits for IF but there's more empirical investigational studies building around CR.

Not just for cancer but for increased lifespan.

In fact there's study verifying that IF without CR is counterproductive.
