Ben Stokes tried to shake hands when 2 batters were nearing their hundreds and they refused. It reminded me of one thing.
77 years ago, something worse happened. One man was batting on 443* and nearing a world record but after tea, the opposition didn't return.
Thread 1/n👇
His name was BB Nimbalkar. Still the only Indian to score 400+ in First Class cricket. He scored 443* in 1948 untouchable. That record stands even today. But it could have been more. So much more. He was just 10 short of Bradman record when the game was stopped.
2/n
It was a Ranji Trophy match between Maharashtra vs Kathiawar (Now Saurashtra). Kathiawar scored 238.
By the time Tea was taken on the 3rd day, Maharashtra had scored 826/4 and Nimbalkar played marathon knock with 443* runs. He was just 10 runs short of breaking the world record
The record was set by Bradman, who scored 452 runs for New South Wales against Queensland.
Nimbalkar wasn't aware that he was so close to breaking the world record until the tea break. During the break, an interesting turn of events took place.
4/n
Kathiawar captain, Thakore Sahib of Rajkot approached Maharashtra's captain. He said either your team declares or my side will pack up and leave.
The Maharashtra captain requested if they could continue for a few more overs but the Kathiawar captain refused.
5/n
With that, Kathiawar team left for the station and Nimbalkar innings ended at 443*
Maharashtra finished at 826 the 2nd highest team total in the Ranji trophy at that time and they won the match because the opposition forfeited.
6/n
After the match, the man who holds the world record, in fact every Test batting record at that time Don Bradman sent a congratulatory note to Nimbalkar. That's what greatness looks like.
7/n
After a few years, Bradman record was broken by Hanif Mohammad, who was run out for 499. Finally in 1994 Brian Lara made history by becoming the first player to score a quintuple century 501* for Warwickshire. But that's a different story.
8/n
Despite falling just short, Nimbalkar 443 remains one of the most incredible individual performances in Indian cricket history. Nothing against any player just posting this, have read about this match many times. Thanks for reading.

13 players have faced at least 20K deliveries but Rahul Dravid is the only player to face 30000 deliveries in Test Cricket. He was the wall between the Ball and Stumps. Mr. Dependable will celebrate his 52nd birthday on 11th Jan.
Let's talk about Dravid in this thread.
🧵1/n
So many memorable moments in his 15 years of international cricket. Featuring in more than 500 matches, it's hard to decide where to begin. Let's start with Lord's itself. Before Lords only his journey started in Singapore, where he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka.

On 20th June 1996, two young talents hailing from different corners of the country received the India Test cap. While one marked the occasion with a century, the other fell just short in the 90s and he batted at number 7 position.
Opening is the most difficult position in Test cricket. One player who retired at the age of 33 and scored more than 12k runs by batting at toughest position. This Thread is about a player who played 161 Tests in the span of 12 years and turns 40 today.
Alastair Cook
🧵1/n
One parameter in assessing a player's career is longevity and ability to overcome injuries.Cook played 159 consecutive Test matches without missing a single match.
In fact only 2 players have ever surpassed the milestone of 150 consecutive Test matches. One of them of course is Cook. The other player is, A name that's been heard quite a bit in recent days - Border.

In 2006 during a match between ENGA and WIA, a young Alastair Cook caught everyone's attention by scoring a century in the very first match. His performance earned him a call up to the senior national team, where he was asked to replace England's premier opening batsman Marcus Trescothick, during the series in India. Interestingly both Cook and Trescothick were born on 25th December.
He began his career in stellar fashion by scoring 60 and 104 against India in India.
Ashwin, the batter often goes unnoticed but his contributions have been crucial. He scored 4 centuries while batting at number 8. Time and again, when the team seemed on the brink of collapse he stood tall at the crease. Let's talk about his batting exploits in this Thread.
He showed everyone that he could not only turn the ball but also turn the game with the bat in India's favour.
1/n
Ashwin's Test career began on a quiet note, with a duck in his very 1st innings, but it didn't take long for the cricket world to recognize his batting skills. In his 3rd Test, When India found themselves in a precarious position, just on the verge of follow on, it was Ashwin who stepped up, joined with young Virat Kohli at the crease. Together they fought back and formed a crucial partnership that turned the tide, he smashed a century.

Again in the 2nd innings he didn't make a big score this time, just 14 runs but those 14 runs were invaluable. Had he not contributed, India's chances of saving the match would have been slim. He was dismissed on the last ball of the match and the match was drawn. He also took 9 wickets in the same match and his all round performance was so exceptional that, in his very first series he was named Player of the Series.

Some cricket related stories are heartbreaking not because of on field performances but because of what happened off the field
South Africa and New Zealand series is called the Tangiwai Shield. In this thread Let's explore the touching story behind the name of this trophy.
1/n
Currently most of the Test series are named after former players like Botham-Richards or Border-Gavaskar or Basil D'Oliveira but one series which was named after a small place in New Zealand called Tangiwai.
2/n
To explore the story behind the name, we must talk about the 1953 NZ vs SA Test series. In the end of 1953 New Zealand toured South Africa to play a 5 match Test series, they lost the 1st Test and 2nd Test was started on 24th Dec 1953.

Moeen Ali did everything England asked of him. From captaining England U19 World Cup team to opening the batting, leading spinner and finishing matches. He was a key player during England's golden period in limited overs cricket.
Few days back he retired and his outstanding international career came to an end. Let's talk about Moeen Ali in this Thread.
(Thread 1/n)
He started his career with Warwickshire but he spent most of his career with Worcestershire. In 2006 he led the England U19 team to the semis.
After nearly a decade of hard work in domestic cricket in 2014 and the period where Swann retired from cricket, England in need of a spinner - Moeen Ali international cricket took off.
2/n
If you ask me whether he is a better batter or bowler. I don't have an answer to that just because he is a better allrounder.
From 2014 to 2018 no player scored 2000 runs and took 150 Wickets in Test cricket except Moeen Ali. He scored 2692 runs along with 163 wickets. During this period only 6 players Ash, Lyon, Herath, Yasir and his countrymen Broad and Jimmy took more wickets than him.

Left-handers and their knack for aesthetically pleasing shots are a match made in heaven. Imagine if a left-handed batter scores more than 28,000 runs in international cricket, it would be a treat for every cricket fan whenever that player steps onto the field with bat in hand. This thread is about one such player Kumar Sangakkara.
(Thread 1/n)
Sangakkara played Test Cricket for 16 years, only three of those 16 years his average in the calendar year was less than 40. What's truly incredible is that in 10 calendar years, his average was above 50. Even in the twilight of his career he remained incredibly consistent.
2/n
Sri Lankan coach Paul Farbrace said, If I had to pick a batsman in world to bat for my life I would pick Sangakkara every time. Not just him, but most cricket fans around the world especially Sri Lankans would say the same.
His sheer consistency and prolific scoring have placed him among the greats of the game.
