Sefer HaTanya, the cornerstone of Chabad Chassidut, opens by telling us that man is made up of two “nefesh,” (in English, often translated as souls but not quite) which are: Nefesh HaBahamit (the Animal Soul), and Nefesh HaElokit (the G-dly soul).
Both are made up multiple parts
If you keep reading further on, however, you realize that there’s a third soul that gets mentioned: the Nefesh HaSichlit (the Intellectual soul).
Sometimes, the Nefesh HaChiyunit (vital) and Nefesh HaTivit (natural) are mentioned as well. So that’s five, but not quite!
The Nefesh HaTivit and Nefesh HaChiyunit really are just either other names for the Nefesh HaBahamit, or in the case of the Nefesh HaTivit, a more refined part of it, but still part it.
So, man has really three souls:
Bahamit/Animal
Sichlit/Intellectual
Elokit/G-dly
The Nefesh HaBahamit (Animal Soul) is what is in charge of everything that has to do with bodily function and physical survival of the body. The desire for food, sleep, all things that help, fortify, give pleasure to the body, etc… the same things that also drive animals.
The Nefesh HaSichlit (Intellectual Soul) represents a bridge between the Nefesh HaBahamit and Nefesh HaElokit.
While the Animal Soul is centered on the Self and its needs, and the G-dly soul is centered on G-d and His needs, the Intellectual Soul is the arbiter between both.
It really deals with everything that has to do with human intellect & understanding in an impartial, cold and clinical way. This is what makes decisions that are driven by more than unthinking natural desires, or comes to control and channel those desires into something else.
By refining your intellect, you can come to refine your animal nature, and you can come to approach all of your animal needs as a human being instead of as an animal (eating healthy, refraining from eating too much, making the right choices, etc…).
The Nefesh HaElokit is the eternal soul. This is not a created being, as nothing created is eternal. As the Tanya describes it, it is a ‘part’ of G-d Himself. This is what G-d “blew” into Adam the first man in order to make him a living creature at the beginning of Creation.
While the Animal Soul mainly expresses itself through emotions, the Divine Soul expresses itself mostly through the brain.
The G-dly soul represents the essence, or real Self, of a Jew.
Our beliefs, words or actions are only garments that cover our essential Self.
When we believe, say and do the right things, then the G-dly soul is in control of our Intellectual Soul and then in control of our Animal Soul.
When we don’t, then our Animal Soul is the one that takes over our Intellectual Soul, but not the G-dly Soul itself.
As the Tanya explains, most of our lives will be a tug of war between the Animal Soul and the G-dly as to which one will be able to convince the Intellectual Soul to take its side according to its ‘arguments’
Now, the G-dly soul itself divides into five parts, which are the Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama, Chaya and Yechida. And those parts themselves divide into Five (Nefesh of Nefesh, Ruach of Nefesh, Neshama of Nefesh, etc..).
Ultimately, they are like limbs and not separate, so to speak.
There is far more to say (the subdivisions in the Animal Soul, which differ from the G-dly soul, to begin with!), but to continue would require a far longer thread (or series of threads), for which I do not have time, as it is Erev Shabbat and Erev Erev Tisha B’Av.
Instead, for the few who kept reading after the opening post, I will wish for all of us to live according to our G-dly soul, for our brains always to make the right decisions, and for our animal nature to act like a man, and not the opposite.
Shabbat Shalom, and an easy fast!

Jews were never kicked out of 109 countries over 1030 times throughout history.
To debunk that meme, and go through the What, When and Why of it all, we might need at least 109 posts, however.
A historical thread.
The truth is that we could simply begin by pointing out that those lists are not accurate. Not only do they usually duplicate countries (France is often listed 3+ times) but they also list cities/locales as nations (Mainz by itself instead as a country instead of city in Germany)
So while this is untrue, and we're gonna see that the number of nations Jews were expelled is far lower than 109, it would be true that if you were to tally all of the places that Jews were kicked out of, it could tally over a thousand. But, here's why:
People who have never studied the subject, who are completely oblivious to the history of American-Israeli relations, are fine with jettisoning a relationship that has favored America far more than Israel due to their ignorance.
General George Keegan was the head of the US Air Force Intelligence. He claimed that Israel gave to America more intelligence on the Soviets and their weapons than he would have received if he had five CIAs.
And that’s not all he said:
He also mentioned that while America received a little over $18 billion over 25 years, the return on interest was that Israel provided the U.S. with the equivalent of up to $80 billion in R&D savings, intelligence and captured Soviet weapon systems in the same period of time.
On the current discourse surrounding starvation in Gaza and how the pro-Israel crowd is doing more damage than good.
A thread.
Here’s the thing: there is some starvation in Gaza. It is possible that some people are dying from hunger. Making fun of it as if it’s not happening is absolutely the wrong way to go about it.
This is horrible messaging & makes everyone in Israel and Jews overall look horrible.
And yes,
There are obese people in Gaza.
There is aid distributed daily in Gaza.
There are restaurants opened in Gaza.
There are markets full of food in Gaza.
Are you in the habit of calling such brush fires in empty lots of unknown origin a desecration in front of G-d, terrorism, and a crime against humanity whose authors must be punished to the full extent of the law?
Eating crow is never pleasant, but it salvages your reputation far more than to pretend that you weren’t wrong to begin with.
It would have shown a great example of morality to the world to simply admit you were taken in by false informations & should have waited for the facts.
It happens to all of us. We read something online or hear something inflammatory, we see red then write or say something when we should have waited to have all the facts as it turns out it was wrong.
The more of a public figure you are, the higher your responsibility in this.
Debunking the idea that Israel is a haven for Jewish criminals fleeing justice in their own home countries.
A thread.
Let’s start from the beginning: Israel passed its Extradition Law in 1954.
To extradite someone, it required:
1 - A valid extradition treaty/reciprocity with the other country
2 - It must be a crime in both countries
3 - Enough evidence for a ‘prima facie’ case (ie, evidence)
Let’s make it clear;
There is no exemption in Israeli law that prevents or immunizes sex offenders from being extradited. It also applies to Jews, Arabs, and any other nationality you can think of. Citizens, and non-citizens alike.
What Jeffrey Epstein did was absolutely monstrous. If he was in fact a Mossad agent, or working directly for the Mossad, that would deserve the highest condemnation.
However, if you think that’s the case, please explain to me how the following makes sense:
1) If he was spying for Israel and the goal was to amass blackmail on American politicians and important figures…
Why didn’t he spend time with American politicians and important figures? He was hanging out with rich people, political has been, and celebrities.
Can anyone explain how blackmail material on Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Courtney Love, Alec Baldwin, Ralph Fiennes, Dustin Hoffman, Naomi Campbell, Harvey Weinstein’s brother, Dershowitz or even Prince Andrew would help? Kevin Spacey, Chris Tucker or David Copperfield?
