1. Norway's position on Palestine epitomises the contradiction of our times.

Norway has one of the most active and mature civil society in Europe when it comes to Palestine, critical media, engaged intellectuals and the government has taken very important steps on Palestine. Image
2. Yet, its Pension Fund, which ammasses the wealth generated by the country oil sale, is robustly invested in Israel's economy of occupation. Nearly 10% of its total value is invested in 45 companies I have investigated in my last report.

See para 77: un.org/unispal/docume…
3. This stands in stark contrast with Norway's obligations under intl law and may even trigger liability given the intl crimes involved.

I alerted the government and the Pension/Oil Fund itself, which has an Ethical Council that should have prevented/averted such investments. Image
4. So far, financial considerations and interests seem to have prevailed over full compliance with int'l law and ethical commitments.

May this be the time of real change and full compliance with int'l law and ethical principles.

If not Norway, who? If not now, when?

On what is happening in Brussels 🇪🇺:

1/ "Historic" would be a meeting leading to the end of the genocide, the dismantling of Israel’s forever-occupation and apartheid, and the beginning of justice and accountability— in line with int'l law, and as per ICJ and ICC proceedings. Meanwhile...
2/ The EU Foreign Affairs Council is legally bound to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. Debating whether Israel is violating human rights under Article 2 is not only superfluous - it is grotesque. The matter has already been settled by the ICJ and multiple UN bodies. Since decades.
2/
The impact of the suspension would be seismic. Economic leverage is the single most powerful tool the EU holds to end Israel’s illegal occupation and ongoing genocide. New research confirms that the EU is not only Israel’s largest trading partner, but also its largest investment partner, nearly double the size of the US.

❌BREAKING❌
1/#Rafael, Israeli state-owned arms manufacturer, has actively supported the genocide in Gaza. Now, in an utter display of cruelty, it uses footage of Palestinians being killed as a marketing tool to promote kamikaze drones. It is IMPUNITY that fuels such depravity.
2/ On the eve of the review of the EU-Israel agreement, it is imperative to denounce the illegality of collaboration with companies that engage in criminal activities, implying war crimes (at a minimum), crimes against humanity, and genocide. consilium.europa.eu/en/meetings/fa…
3/One example of how the system of impunity thrives: EU #Horizon funds Rafael through a project involving the Israeli Ministry of Defense and Tel Aviv University. Among the partners are several institutions, including the Port Authority of Ravenna (Italy).

🧵 Independence and honesty are powerful tools against injustice.
@UN_SPExperts serve pro bono at the request of the @UN_HRC, documenting/reporting on human rights violations, often at great personal cost. We act based on knowledge of int'l law and profound belief that applying the Law equally, without double standards, can make the world a better place. Here are some examples of my colleagues' outstanding contributions on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory in these most critical times:

THREAD:
1. Anatomy of a genocide sketched out.

ohchr.org/en/press-relea…
2. "Israel's executive and military leadership and soldiers have intentionally distorted foundational rules of international humanitarian law - distinction, proportionality and precaution - in an attempt to legitimise genocidal violence against the Palestinian people."
3. “By deliberately redefining the categories of human shields, evacuation orders, safe zones, collateral damage and medical protection, Israel has used their protective functions as ‘humanitarian camouflage’ to conceal its genocidal campaign,” she said.

ON ISRAEL's #SelfDefense

1/Under Int'l Law Israel's actions in Gaza cannot qualify as self-defense
(see thread 👇)

I commend legal scholars as @ArdiImseis, who powerfully challenge "Israel's self-defense" narrative (watch video):
2/ In int'l law, #SelfDefense is a term of art, with a narrower meaning than in common language.

Under Art51 of #UNCharter, self-defense means :
(1) legitimate use of force
(2) by a state to protect itself against an attack
(3) from another state.
3/ Under Art 51, use of force in #SelfDefense is permissible solely to repel an armed attack by another State. Threats from armed groups from within occ. territory give state the RIGHT TO PROTECT ITSELF, but not to wage war against the state from which the armed group emanates.
