You can preface everything I say, with “In my opinion”.
I am not trying to present anything as factual, it is simply just my opinion.
Stating that every time would make for a much worse experience.
💎 #1 - Marc Cucurella
This in my eyes, is the best defender in the game.
He also happens to be missing in many drafts, amongst the more engaged managers.
Making him a differential, on here at least.
What a gift.
Tactically:
It is typical for full-backs to invert into the pivot during build up, ever since Pep Guardiola implemented it in the modern Premier League.
What is less common however, is the sequence of events which unfold after.
In the image below, you can see Cucurella operating at the same height as Andrey Santos (RCM), when Chelsea have possession.
This is the first abnormality.
Most FBs tasked with contributing to build up in a central area, do not advance their position this much, there after.
Nor do they retain the position, but he does.
That, whilst getting closer to what you want, isn’t exactly ground breaking though.
It’s the role after this which paints the pretty picture.
He is instructed to complete/do the following, at different times:
- Arrive into the box when he senses a chance could be on offer for himself, with the freedom of an *attacker* (be there every time).
- Position himself in areas he can cross/shoot from outside the box.
- Receive/carry into and around the box to cross/shoot.
- Combine with both the LW & #9 to help manufacture a shooting opportunity for either of them, or even himself.
- Occasionally break beyond the last line as a runner.
- Counter press high and pick up loose second balls deep in the opposition’s half.
& more
As a player mentally, physically & technically - he’s suited to this role, and by default suited to delivering attacking returns for you.
Whether that be evidenced through his aggressive duelling, volume of runs into the box, ball striking, combination play, or Maresca’s faith…
He can do it.
Jose Mourinho gave an interview recently where he expressed an opinion that you can see below.
Essentially saying that coaches shouldn’t make players do, what they are suited to do, for the sake of their idea.
He can do it.
Fixtures:
The opening four are certainly healthy looking.
Given the Premier League has changed so much, in the sense that:
There’s so much attacking talent, managers are overall less flexible, and therefore less likely to adapt their side to diminish opposition attacking strengths, and “negative” football has been significantly outlawed…
I don’t really look at any team and think, “that’s a REALLY good opportunity for a clean sheet”.
Some are just better/a lot better than others.
(Excluding the promoted sides, given they haven’t been tested)
Price:
£6.0m is £0.5m short of where I think he should be, so you’re getting him at a discounted rate in my eyes.
Exit Time:
GW5
GW7
WC7
Beyond
Never
Overall:
Huge upside, with a very good floor - Stellar option.
💎 Iliman Ndiaye & Joao Pedro
REALISTICALLY, there are very few assets who have enough going for them, at a cheap enough price, who could perform SO well.
These are two who can.
Especially the Chelsea player.
This unlocks the rest of your squad from the start.
Knowing there’s a relatively good chance that two fairly cheap players “will” be in your team for a
long time allows you to allocate the money safely elsewhere.
Given you’re investing more, you should be getting more points.
This is a “hidden” source of points, that assets (gems) like these can offer.
Secondly, through their lengthy stay in your side, you will not have to allocate transfers to these positions.
Rather, you can attack elsewhere.
Another source of “hidden” points.
I refer back to earlier, because there aren’t many who could realistically pull this off.
Ndiaye - xMins seem great to me irrespective of Grealish’s move.
In fact I think that makes him a better asset. A player who can find him in the pockets, and a player who will carry the ball up enough, so Ndiaye can get there in the first place.
Penalties & he’s got goals in him.
Small space ability + manipulation + ball striking within the pockets (shorter back lift) + dribbling
He’s got teammates around him who can platform him well, in FPL terms at least. Mainly, because there’s quality in that Everton side now.
Joao Pedro - Fixtures, form, quality.
You name it, he’s got it.
He looks phenomenally good.
I don’t see why this should stop.
He can do SO much.
He’ll exploit you in behind. He’ll roll you and put himself through/shoot. He can combine. He can hold up. He can head. He can shoot (more angles than most, better striker of the ball than most).
Chelsea are playing really well, and have been for a while.
There’s a real feel good factor around him and the club.
Easy pickings for me.
💎 Matz Sels & Neco Williams
No team has a better first six fixtures from a defensive perspective, in my eyes.
So that’s a good start.
Starting with the goalkeeping category, I have never seen a worse set of options be presented, for the start of the season.
They all at least have one of the following challenges, in a strong sense:
(That is aside from Robert Sanchez, who comes close, but I prefer the Belgian’s fixtures, and clean sheet potential)
Sels on the other hand, has none of those challenges.
A very fair counter argument to start with, would be to discuss Nottingham Forest’s drop off at the back end of last season.
The variables at play there, I do not think are still present/effect the current moment.
Including, but not limited to:
- Mental Fatigue
- Lack of Quality Depth
- Inexperience in getting over the line
Good defensive players.
A coach who sets his team up well structurally OOP.
A coach who prioritises a high level of defensive security, evidenced through the systems deployed & tactics employed.
That’s enough for me to attribute a relatively high clean sheet potential to NFO.
🥇🥈🥉
Murillo vs Milenkovic vs Williams:
With how the pricing is structured, I haven’t seen a single person discuss leaving £0.5m ITB for Gameweek 2.
That may very well have happened, and I’ve missed it.
But, the fact I haven’t seen one indicates it’s not being thought about much at all.
Which highlights how important it is to use all funds available to yourself.
Going for Neco saves you £0.5m from the off, which is lovely.
*
Murillo’s nature makes him a CBIT magnet. Similar to Gabriel, he loves engaging in the duel, and does so frequently by stepping up, as opposed to *winning* the situation in a more Saliba/VVD like way.
The fact he likes to pass as much as he does, may also mean he holds onto it for a bit longer, looking for it.
Situations can develop in a fashion where he’s forced to clear it, as opposed to playing it.
Achieving blocks make sense for him given his mental profile as discussed above.
So when I rank him third, I am in no way trying to put him down. I think he’s a great option, just the least great of the three.
*
Why?
Well Milenkovic’s mammoth box threat outweighs the extra Murillo CBIT “threat”, for me. WHEN you consider that the Serbian is quite good on the metric as well.
Nikola M. is seriously dangerous in your box.
*
Williams is the best of all worlds.
As mentioned, you save a precious £0.5m, and that’s the biggest thing.
He’s good enough, even in comparison to Murillo, for CBIT.
He can accumulate points from CBIT at a rate that keeps pace or close enough. The CBIT per 90 value paints a prettier picture.
There are some tell tale pre-season signs that you may see a more attacking role from him this season, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he generated a couple returns from there.
Crosses with a fair bit of dip on them.
*
So all factors combined, he becomes my favourite.
🥇 Williams
🥈 Milenkovic
🥉 Murillo
💎 Mohammed Salah & Cole Palmer
There’s nothing one can say in a short thread, to truly encapsulate how good these two are.
I shall not attempt to as such. Rather just offer the opinions that:
Palmer will start hot. The conditions look better now, as does the player.
When he’s already world class and you give him this, non-negotiable.
Just having Joao Pedro at #9 improves the conditions to return so much.
Prefer where he’s operating now, there’s been a tweak.
*
Salah, I get the argument to go against. I also think it makes sense.
It’s just…
He’s (probably) the best player in the league
He plays for (probably) the best attack in the league.
He’s got an enormous ceiling, and very high floor.
He’s very often captain material, more so than anyone else.
AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR ME:
The replacements on offer, with the cash you will have available, just don’t provide a high enough upside, or even close, to justify the risk.
Haaland + whoever, just doesn’t outweigh Salah + the cheaper whoever (as there are many good cheap options, and not many elite mid-high priced options)

If you asked me this time last week, I think I certainly would have been well above average in terms of how positively I viewed the Erling Haaland captaincy.
However, if you asked me now, I would almost certainly be below.
I’m actually somewhat expectant of…
logging in on Sunday evening, and seeing the great Gabriel there with another clean sheet.
Why?
- Arteta & 15/09/2024
- KDB’s potential injury
To go to Spurs, and to put in the performance they did, without Declan Rice.

💎 Saka, Isak, Salah, Joao Pedro & their competition
Salah & Joao Pedro have over 1.4 million transfers in, combined this Gameweek.
Saka & Isak have just under a million transfers out together.
This is one of the more popular “dual” moves in recent times.
To assess whether…
it’s worth it, we must:
- Project outcomes for all four across the next few weeks
and
- You MUST personally evaluate the opportunity cost of these transfers, and whether they will serve better purpose elsewhere over the medium term for YOUR team.
