Sen. Carol Alvarado, D-Houston, leads press conference following symbolic Democratic walkout in Senate to protest redistricting vote.
“Our options here to push back to fight in the Senate are pretty limited, so we’re using every tool we have to demonstrate our opposition.”
Sen. Nathan Johnson (@NathanForTexas), of Dallas, says his Democrats colleagues aren’t “abdicating their responsibility” by fleeing the state.
“There’s only one party here that has actually abdicated their responsibility here, and that’s the Republican Party.”
@NathanForTexas Sen. @CesarJBlanco, of El Paso, up now.
“This is an attack on our democracy and on minorities,” Blanco says in Spanish. “The people in power are manipulating the rules … If they win now, they’ll do this every election, taking away the power of voters to elect their leaders.”
@NathanForTexas @CesarJBlanco Sen. @BorrisLMiles, of Houston, says Texas has been found guilty for two decades of trying to suppress Black and Brown votes.
“This is just another attempt of a hostile, rogue, racist takeover of democracy,” he says. “We will not take part in democracy being washed out.”
@NathanForTexas @CesarJBlanco @BorrisLMiles Sen. @SarahEckhardtTX, of Austin, becomes slightly emotional talking about the 100+ dead from CenTex floods as well as shooting yesterday in Austin.
She expresses frustration that while some flooding-related bills will be addressed today, no red flag laws are on table in Texas.
@NathanForTexas @CesarJBlanco @BorrisLMiles @SarahEckhardtTX Sen. Molly Cook (@MollyforTexas), of Houston, says Texans are “sick and tired of the political games.”
“Stop the redistricting,” she says. “Put flooding first. Stop letting politicians pick their people. Put the people first.”
@NathanForTexas @CesarJBlanco @BorrisLMiles @SarahEckhardtTX @MollyforTexas Following walkout, Dems are back in the chamber for votes on other bills.

HAPPENING NOW: Members of @LULAC are speaking out about Texas AG Paxton’s voter fraud raids, again calling for a federal investigation into the tactics
#txlege houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas…
LULAC National President Roman Palomares (center) talking about Lidia Martinez, 87 (pictured in pink). She’s been a member of LULAC for 35 yrs and spends her time helping veterans and seniors register to vote. She was one of the people whose homes were raided Aug. 20.

The Texas House will soon take a vote on whether to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton. The gallery is full. The debate is capped at four hours, evenly divided by opponents and proponents. #txlege
House General Investigating Committee Chair and state Rep. Andrew Murr, R-Junction, is introducing the resolution containing the articles of impeachment now.
The 20 articles are being read aloud to members.
State Rep. John Smithee, R-Amarillo, asking if the House will be asked to vote on the articles separately or as a whole.
Speaker says all of them together, as they're part of one resolution.
@TomOliverson The bill does not criminalize parents, who are in a difficult position, Oliverson says.
@TomOliverson Oliverson is asking for testifiers to include author, year and publication when citing studies. He did not include such citations in his own opening statements.
Texas House public health com'te chair @StephanieKlick announces she'll cut off testimony tonight at MIDNIGHT on #HB1686, which wld ban gender-affirming care for minors, to allow members their rest. Senate passed same bill out of com'te last wk: houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas…#txlege
@StephanieKlick I believe Chair Klick said something about leaving the portal open for written comments until 5 p.m. on Friday, but I may have misheard. Waiting to hear from her staff for clarity.
@StephanieKlick Klick: "I'm committed to open, transparent and participatory gov't. It is my responsibility to balance that with the health of my committee members."
Sen. @DonnaCampbellTX, R-New Braunfels, now laying out #SB14, which would ban gender-affirming care for minors. Says it's all about "child protection."
"Sometimes we must work hard against something in order to fight for something," she says. #txlege
@DonnaCampbellTX Sen. Jose @Menendez4Texas, D-San Antonio, asks why Campbell, who is a physician herself, wants to get in between patients and doctors.
She says this is a situation where the system can't regulate itself + the gov't needs to step in.
This is a frequent argument used by conservatives, but important to note there is no definitive research proving social media has influence over gender identity.
