Still struck by the dramatic effects of psilocybin on mouse health & lifespan 🍄🟫
Here’s some info about this molecule & where people obtain it: 🧵…
Over 180 mushroom species contain psilocybin, including Psilocybe cubensis, Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty caps), and others
These mushrooms grow in various regions worldwide, often in damp grasslands or forested areas
Psilocybin is a Schedule I controlled substance federally—illegal to buy, possess, or use outside of approved research
Effects include altered perception, mood changes, and changes in thought patterns
It’s being actively researched for potential benefits in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorders
Oregon and Colorado have legalized / decriminalized psilocybin for supervised therapeutic use. Some cities, eg Denver, Oakland, Seattle also decriminalized possession
In Oregon and Colorado, psilocybin services are available via licensed facilitators
Laws vary internationally. It’s legal in some places (eg Jamaica, Brazil), decriminalized in others, and strictly illegal in many countries
The study published in July by Kato et al. shows that psilocybin via psilocin) extended the “lifespan” of cultured human skin and lung cells by over 50–57% & delayed aging signs like reduced ox stress and telomere shortening
Aged female mice (19 months old, roughly equivalent to humans aged 60–65) were treated with psilocybin monthly (initially 5 mg/kg, then 15 mg/kg for 10 months)
Although the lifespan study wasn’t finished, it is clear that there is a survival difference, even at this stage. Looking forward to seeing the final result
Psilocin notably increased levels of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a protein known to regulate cellular aging, oxidative stress, and DNA repair, which might explain these results in part
The decreasing ratio of working to sick people is a threat to civilization. As more people live longer, sicker, and fewer are born, the ratio will reach a catastrophic 1:1 by 2080!
There is a solution 🧵
By 2100, without improving healthspan or reversing fertility decline, the U.S. could lose over 50% of its workforce-driven GDP. Globally, the drop could exceed 40%. The future of economic stability depend as much on health as it does on innovation
2025 US GDP: $30.15 trillion
2100 US GDP: $14.27 trillion
Recent news claimed scientists at UCLA had solved hair loss. Is this true?
Let's dive in 🧵
Positive results were announced from a Phase 2a (efficacy) of a molecule called PP405 for the treatment of hair loss, Pelage Pharmaceuticals announced a few days ago.
The study found that 31% of men with a high degree of hair loss who received PP405 had a greater than 20% increase in hair density at 8 weeks, compared to 0% in the placebo group
NEW STUDY: Only 14 centenarians in this study but higher heart rate variability (SDNN) was associated with longer life.
How do you know your SDNN? 🧵
In 14 centenarians followed until death, only SD of normal-to-normal interval (SDNN) showed significant correlation (ρ = 0.536; p = 0.048) with survival prognosis
The Oura Ring (no affiliation) measures SDNN. While they primarily focus on RMSSD (Root Mean Square of Successive Differences) and 5-minute samples for HRV analysis, the app also provides an average per night SDNN
"We aim to understand & reverse the underlying mechanisms of aging to treat a range of diseases & injuries...The loss of funding halts ongoing experiments that cannot simply be restarted," geneticist David Sinclair told @BBCNews 🧵 bbc.com/news/articles/…
"The administration's excuse that these policies somehow address antisemitism are so absurd," said Jacob Miller, a student and former head of Harvard Hillel, the Jewish social hub on campus
The White House and Harvard have been locked in a political, legal and financial battle - the stakes of which have dramatically escalated over the past two months
NEW STUDY: 1 in 5 US kids is nutrient deficient. Malnutrition is associated with epigenetic age acceleration, up to 4.19 yrs. Therefore, it's key for you & your family to eat fresh food or take certain vitamins 🥦🫐🫛🥑
Here are 5 effects of a deficiency & how to prevent it:
1. Obesity & metabolic disorders because processed foods are high in sugar, salt, & unhealthy fats.
2. Poor gut health - a lack of fiber & plant diversity impairs the microbiome...
3. Reduced immunity due to fewer antioxidants and polyphenols
4. Elevated risk of other diseases including cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers...
