Neuroscientists already know a great deal about how the brain and body respond to chronic trauma and stress. Research on Holocaust survivors, as well as animal studies on chronic social defeat from rats to primates,

2/ has mapped out many of the pathways, neurotransmitters, hormones etc involved. What remains largely unknown, however, is what happens after a person commits atrocities, after dehumanizing entire groups and enacting violence upon them.
3/ For instance, the neural correlates of soldiers who later take their own lives, such as within the Israeli military, are likely distinct from those of conventional trauma victims, though they may share certain overlaps.
4/ Which brain structures undergo change? Which neurotransmitter systems are disrupted? Exploring these questions could illuminate the neural basis of conscience: its limits, its entanglement with emotion and cognition, its breaking points and its role in psychiatric disorders.
